Older (pre '57) 8-3/4 diffs will not fit into the true 8-3/4 ('57 and later) axle housing. The axle housing has a different bolt pattern for the carrier, the axles have different splines, and the axle bearings are all different. I've been looking for the pinion seal for my '56 Imperial and can't find a source. It's 2 5/8 ID x 3 1/2 OD. Can anyone send me to a lead? YTY.

C-70 is a Crown Imperial; C-73 is Imperial. Different wheelbases, etc.

You're new here so we'll cut you some slack. Best if you only post your particular question in the most appropriate sub-forum not multiple times. This is the correct sub-forum so I will provide my 2 cents here.

First of all for clarification, you have a C-73 Imperial, the big boy, and you are after the seal noted as 3-22-45 (the section number in the Parts book) in the diagram below. Based on the parts listing below the diagram, I see C-73 wanting a 1404 504 seal. We previously chased down a 1404 504 in this thread (click on the link):

However, what we came up with seems to be smaller than what you think you are looking for - which is confusing.

You may have to look up your part by size, sounds like you've already disassembled and measured? I'd look on SKF's website for a seal in the size you need, order it and see if it matches. These seals are usually pretty cheap.

Another option is to go to Andy Bernbaum, I've had good luck with them. Here is a link to their site, they list the seal at $35 plus shipping. Expensive, but I'm willing to bet it will be correct.

As a fellow '56 Imperial owner, I'm curious about your car. What body style? Which trans? What kind of condition is it in?

While not convinced that you really need a 2.625" x 3.50" seal, I found an SKF 26177 with those dimensions.

You're welcome
