Veteran Posts: 267 Location: Sydney | Id like to get my original steering wheel restored but it will take up to 12 weeks. In the meantime, Id like to fit a temporary one as I drive the car quite a bit. I cant seem to find anywhere that lists a fitment or availability to suit this. Can anyone help with some info regarding an aftermarket wheel and boss kit or compatibility with something else? Cheers and TIA

Restoration costs on these mopar wheels is pricey. If you were in Perth, I could lend you a wheel from a 58 Plymouth (I think) but might be from a royal, but no horn stuff I do have 2 aero wheels, but only one set of horn components and 1 std 60 Plymouth wheel that's rough, but for std steering and the remnants of a 60 dodge wheel The wheels for standard and power are different as the horn wire for the std one goes up the centre of the steering shaft, where the power one has a horn contact ring. Be prepared for big coin though, the fancy wheels will cost over a grand (especially by the time it gets here) george laurie had some wheels for sale ages ago

Veteran Posts: 267 Location: Sydney | I was actually going to use https://pearlcraft.com.au But I just found out they cant do a resto on the clear wheels like mine. Also, would be a grand to get it done in 2 tone. Ill have to find another alternative or just go with aftermarket if I can find one to fit. What are the Aero wheels you are referring to? What aftermarket wheels are available to suit mine? Seems awfully hard to track something down that suitable.

Since this is a time consuming work (also depending on current order status), be prepared to wait at least 3 months. There is actually no after market steering wheels that would go together with the AstraDome.

Board Moderator & Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 13042 Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | The cost covers full removal of all old plastic, rechroming of the steering wheel, recasting in all clear plastic and painting of the colored section. The result is very durable and looks totally great. (IMG_3531-rez.jpg) Attachments ---------------- IMG_3531-rez.jpg (116KB - 248 downloads)

Veteran Posts: 267 Location: Sydney | That looks fantastic but waiting time and price wise its a little too much Im quite stunned that there is nothing aftermarket that will work with the astrodome. If I could find a suitable boss, I could possibly use it to machine an adapter......maybe???

Board Moderator & Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 13042 Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | Don't get me wrong, of course there are bosses that will fit the steering shaft, but they will never fit designwise. If you need a temporary steering wheel, then Grant might be a choise - one of these will fit http://www.grantproducts.com/products/browse/installation-kits/auto... but really, is it impossible to indicate MoPar and year in the description??

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8443 Location: Perth Australia | Aero wheel is a general term for the clear wheels Here is a link to someone that re casts them http://qualityrestorations.com/plymouth-steering-wheels/ I got mine from George Laurie. Its a NOS one and was cheap compared to re casting but wasn't cheap in the scheme of things Before I bought the NOS one, I got a "repaired one that has since cracked up without any actual use and will probably just be a wall hanger as it still cost me a grand (Aero wheel 002s.JPG) Attachments ---------------- Aero wheel 002s.JPG (76KB - 247 downloads)

Board Moderator & Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 13042 Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | Correction, the aero wheels are the squarish steering wheels which could have parts made of Lucite, hence clear, but not necessarily. A clear steering wheel is referred to as a Lucite steering Wheel So, in the photo above there are two aero steering wheels, one Lucite and one normal

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8443 Location: Perth Australia | The wheel on the right in my pic above is a clear wheel, its been painted It looked pretty good when I first got it, but if you look closely at the white sections, you can see where it started to crack Your wheel isn't that bad for a driver, as I said above, be better to get another wheel and get that one fixed. The aero wheels as a core (stuffed) sell for around US$500, but I don't think yours is quite that bad Wizard might know of a core available to get done in Sweden As mentioned, the US restorer is much more pricey, but he does do the recast using clear and coloured plastics, not just clear and paint

Veteran Posts: 267 Location: Sydney | Can anyone tell me what the compatible models and years would be that will fit? If I can find an alternative to use to be modified/restored or to use temporarily while mine is being done.

Veteran Posts: 267 Location: Sydney | Thanks for that. Any other Chrysler models that fit? New Yorker steering wheels are non existent or worth crazy money. Like for example, the 62 Newport mentioned above by Powerflite...

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | This is the wrong color for me, but otherwise I would just buy it and bolt it on. It's for a '60 and in decent shape. I'm not sure where the cutoff is for interchangeability, but it works at least to '62, but probably much later than that as well. https://www.ebay.com/itm/202447298555?ul_noapp=true
