So heres my stupid question of the day......

How does the back seat come out and what is a retarder spring and is it to do with the front seats or rear??

Car is 1960 New Yorker, bench seats front and rear.

TIA

You need to first push the back seat rearwards and meanwhile try to lift it up - one side at the time is easier.

There are two hooks welded in the floor and an U-shaped round-iron in each side of the seat.

It can be difficult to get it out.

The backrest is bolted - remove the bolts and lift it up slightly

If those are like my 56 Dodge, the rear seat bottom lifts up from the front. There are two "tangs" sticking up from the floor of the car, one on each side of the car, probably about 6" to 8" inwards from the outer edge of the seat bottom. The rear seat bottom will have two wire loop receivers that match up with these two tangs. You might have to push the lower front of the seat bottom a bit towards the back of the car to relieve the tension between the wire loop and the tang and then lift up that side. Repeat on the other side. Rotate the seat bottom up and pull the seat bottom away from the seat back. Remove the seat bottom from the car.

The seat back will be held to the car by tangs and loops at the top and tabs at the bottom that are bolted to the body. Remove the two bolts and push the seat back upwards until the metal loops in the seat frame clear the metal tangs that are part of the body. Carefully maneuver the seat back out of the car.

If you look closely below, you can see the metal loops on this seat bottom that fit against the body floor tangs.

Thank you both for that.
I was hoping it would be that simple, but I didnt want to damage anything while trying to figure it out.
Cheers
