I have a gas tank that doesn't leak and looks to be in good condition so I would like to use it. Unfortunately, it has a coating of furry rust on the inside of it that I am sure would clog my filters for an unknown period of time. What is the best approach here? I called a chem-dip place and they wanted $100 to clean it out. That's just too close to the price I would pay to get a new tank. Could I coat the inside of it with Ospho and hose it out with good results? How about putting a bunch of pebbles in it and shaking it around for a while? Or would it be better to try to de-rust it electrolyticaly with baking soda? Or should I stop futzing with it and buy a new tank?

I've used lengths of chain and dish soap in water, tie a wire to one end of the chain so you can get it out easily, then repeatedly slosh it around until all sides have been done. Drain, then clean out with lacquer thinner.

Another method is use a gallon of Muriatic acid, repeatedly coat all surfaces, then drain. Best to mix some baking soda with water to neutralize the acid afterwards. If you choose to do this, outdoors is preferable, as the vapors will cause anything nearby to flash rust if bare steel is exposed.

I'll give that a try. Just cleaning it out with something abrasive would eliminate the majority of the problem. Using the chain is a great idea to extract it easier. Thanks.

You can use 5% citric acid solution ( 50 gm citric acid/1 lit hot water/+ some ammonia, pH must be 3,5), hot water rinse well once done, pressure washer if you have, keep it real hot.

then follow up with KBS "tank sealer", I would get 1 quart so you can really coat it.

I use a dog chain and throw in big bolts and nuts(fish em out with a magnet or tie them together with a wire also).

All said and done the quart of sealant is 38$, 100$ doesn't sound that bad actually.

Except that coming out of the chem-dip, they don't put any sealer in it. They just clean it only for $100.

I used a cement mixer.
Tie the tank to the front of the mixer.
Place a couple of hand fulls of gravel in the tank.
Slow the mixer down to its slowest speed.
After 20 minutes turn the tank over and do it again.
Noisy, but comes out clean as a whistle.

I don't have a cement mixer, but I wonder if I could get away with tying it to my rear wheel and let the car idle. I think my neighbors would consider having me certified if I did that.

I just did a tank for a 1967 Chrysler Newport Custom.
I used phosphoric acid and drywall screws.
I like the drywall screws or something pointy to get into the seam of the tank.
I also plug the holes with plumbing test plugs.

pretty much how i did it ,,,,,,, ending by runnin @ 100gals. of water or so through it to rid of particles . the hooked up an old blow drier
to dry it up and flash rust will be at an extreme minimum -----------------------------------------later

What is the price range to have the gas tank hot tanked? Results?

I need to clean my tank out before I try to salvage it by taking it to a welder to fix the rust hole.
I have about an inch worth of sludge at the bottom of my tank, so I don't even know if I can have it hot tanked in its condition...

Anyone had a similar issue and how they managed to clean it all out?

I know this is an old thread but I want to hear more about a new tank for $100.00. I have used the cement mixer method with gravel dumped inside. The new cheap plastic barreled ones don't fair as well.
