I initially had a problem with my 55 Belvedere leaking brake fluid around the master cylinder cap (manual brakes with remote booster). I traced it to the pinhole vent in the cap. With the cap off, when I depressed then released the brake pedal, I noticed a small fountain of brake fluid in the reservoir which would have hit the lid, causing some to come out the vent hole. I made a new rubber gasket for the lid with only a small off-centre hole located away from the vent area. Problem solved.

I don't think my rubber has a hole it has a multi ribbed circle like plunger and the fluid is leaking down the sides not the top

My cap seal was a thin rubber ring. It sounds like your seal may be original and designed to prevent leakage from splashing out the vent hole. I would have thought it would have a vent hole in it to compensate for fluid level changes. Maybe it has a concertina like action?

There are two style gaskets for the lid, the type that is merely a thin ring to seal the rim and the full gasket type with a small hole in the center to allow the bolt to pass through. The latter type prevents the geyser from shooting out the vent but still allows enough air flow to compensate for the drop in fluid level.
