I was going through some archived photos yesterday looking for something and found a photo of a 56 Dodge Police D500 that had a Dash Pot on the carb. I knew that my D500 with Carter 2443S WCFB did *NOT* have a dash pot. Both cars were built with Powerflite automatics. Why the difference in dash pots (Or lack of therein)? My carb has the dash pot arm, just no dash pot. I've never had an issue with not having one.

My car has a dash pot. When I rebuilt the engine, I took it off and noticed that it was stuck in the down position and was having no effect on the car at all. I replaced it at that time. I honestly cannot tell any difference. Since you don't have one, I would not bother to hunt up the parts to add it.

It's a damper for the carburetor valves - if you're engine tends to stall upon fast throttle release, then you need one.

Thanks for the comments Brian and Sven. I know what a dash pot is and why it is there (to help close the throttle slowly, not abruptly, when getting totally off the gas). I was just curious as why one 315 D500 hemi might have got one and at least mine did not. Is there something about the way a police officer would drive his D500 2 dr Coronet (with Powerflite) that would necessitate a dash pot?

Anyway, thanks.

Maybe built at different plants?

That is true. My 56 D500 was built in the LA plant. The police car D500 was built in Detroit (35...VIN).

Or mine did have it and somebody took it off or...

The trick is finding that bracket, dashpots are not too hard to find.

With a carburetor equipped for a good fuel supply for a powerful enging, there's a risk taht the Engine will run rich upon fast release of the accelerator and stall. The dash pot will ensure that the valves close slowly for to avoid the above situation.

I would not be that worried about the bracket. That is just metal which can be cut, drilled and bent to the required shape using that photo as a guide. (Cereal box cardboard first, then 16 gauge metal and then a 1/8" (3/16"(?)) thick final). However, I would be be *VERY* concerned about getting the 12 point intake manifold bolts out of my heads without breaking them.

The intake bolts and nuts are easy. Its the exhaust ones that get stuck. Use 2 nuts if you need to remove them, one to lock the other to turn.

I have a 1960 300F and one of the few things missing is a dash pot. For this particular car they are stupid expensive and not very available. I kinda wonder if I will need one when the car is ready but then again was considering dual throttle body fuel injection on the cross rams since I do not have original carbs. Sometimes I consider getting readily available pots and fabbing a bracket but with the custom stuff I have done in the past its always nice using OEM because it fits the first time and is usually strong.

My engine needs one. It is also said to reduce oil consumption.

Hmm yes Sid, hypothetically there will be a lower (lesser) vacuum temporary and that could prevent that oil is sucked through the valve spindles.

Or, could you elaborate an other theory?

The 300 F and G is an anti-stall pot that is controlled by vacuum, engine stalls vacuum drops and it pushes the bell crank for both carbs to open slightly.
there is one for sale on ebay now.

No, thats it, less vacuum in the cylinders while coasting, for a limited time. But its sucked mainly past the piston rings.

I ordered one for a 1958, 59, 60 pontiac according to the listing for $25 shipped. It looks similar to the 300f style with the exception being the bracket. One side gets vacuum the other actuates the adjustable screw. Making brackets is easy, making them look decent is the challenge. I may try it out when the time comes. I can't justify the nearly $300 for a stock dash pot right now.
