I put a float charger on the battery when I took the 57 Suburban all apart last fall. I periodically checked to make sure the light was still lit on the charger. Evidently that light can be lit even if it's junk and not charging at all. Now...my battery is JUNK!

Oh well, stuff happens.

Who makes a decent battery now days? I know they've been making batteries differently for a number of years and "we the consumer" didn't get the good end of that deal.

I was considering just going with an Optima red top but I really couldn't tell you if they're making them out of junk as well. Maybe they're crap too? I probably don't actually need an Optima for the price but I want reliability. I use a GM 1 wire on it because I like to do rolling cruises and that sometimes requires an electric fan when you get caught in heavy traffic.

So I was wondering what you guys may have heard about batteries these days and what might be a decent selection.

I would like to have plenty of power to crank that old starter over. For those that aren't familiar with the starters in the 57's, they're huge! They look like the starters for semi tractors!

I'm pretty bummed that my battery died, that was a good battery that had been in that car for at least 7, maybe 8 years with no float charger for over the winter. I just made it a point to start it up at least 3 or 4 times and let it run about 15 minutes. Last fall I pulled the motor and trans and re did the engine bay so the battery sat on a my wooden desk with a float charger on it. That charger is going in the trash!

Anyway, any thoughts on batteries would be appreciated.

Wayne

I've had a very satisfactory experience with Napa Gold Group 24s - the first one lasted about 10 years!

...and you can put a tar-topper on it.
