Just a reminder -- excess play in our steering wheels is most likely the rubber insulator between the steering wheel shaft and the input shaft of the steering box. A $10 item.

Good with a reminder. The car is stuffed away for winter storage and this is not in mind at the moment. But the spring is coming closer and this issu will be more essential.

I have had a look at this rubber insulation before, but it looked ok and I belive my steering play is in the steering gear. But after I read this, I have read a couple of other threads and I am not sure anymore that it has to be a play in the steering box/gear.

How big play on the steeringwheel could a bad insulator cause? If I meassure the play on my car I can turn the wheel approx 15 cm (6 inch ) (on the edge of the steering wheel) I think it is really much, but could it be that simple to only change the insulator?

If it not is the insulator, (I am sure it is not any balljoints or suspension parts. The pitman arm is not moving within the steering wheel play.) What could it be othervise? What is it that gets worn in the steering box?

That much play is almost surely in the gear box.

First of all, Power steering or manual steering?

With Power steering, the free-play lessens when the engine is started up.

If the car has been steered without the Power assist (if equipped), there's a risk that the insulator is cut through, still looks good, but really bad.

It is power steering. And a '58 Firesweep. Maybe essential

If I meassure the play on the wheel it is 15 cm. But as wizard says, I belive it is more less when the car is on and driving. It has always been an amount of play. But now I want to get rid of it ones and for all.

I have ordered a new rubber insulation today. I hope this will be enough to get rid of the play. If it´s not to cold this weekend I will try to remove the steering column and have a check.

Send your SB to the folks at Firm Feel in Washington state if that insulator is not the fail point. They specialize in Mopar suspension and steering. They rebuilt my SB for my 61 and it is truely as good as new. Their number (360) 546-3633

Hi all -

Is there a link to the right insulator to purchase (I've searched online, but cannot find anything) and a write up on replacement? If a write up doesn't exist, if anyone can bullet out the steps I'll make a nice write up with pictures when we replace ours! Thanks all

If you're still looking for an insulator, I bought my last one from Gary Goers but I'm not sure what is happening with the business now. Last I read, someone was buying the business from him..

Andy Bernbaum has it -- S-140/141 , $14. And it is just for power steering.
