I don't know if this has ever been posted before.   I presume it was a factory prototype.

The photo caption calls it a '59 Custom Royal Regal Lancer.

I like it.

There's a view of the rear of the same car on page 69 of Collectible Automobile magazine from June 1993. I can scan it later and post it here.

Careful DOC, there was HALF a positive Remark on a 59 Dodge there.. Hell we may change you yet.. LMAO

The Side Sweep sure does look Pretty.. Wonder what other changes would of been made ( like Upholstery / 1 type Engine ETC ) had it gone in to Production,,

This was, in fact, a prototype model.

Nobody's ever seen/heard of the prototype 57 "Stallion" model, huh?

I love it too! Wish it went into production.
I like the 59's angry front,I just wish the fin went all the way back like the '57's instead off curving back underneath.

I've never seen any images of the 59 Regal's interior; hard to imagine a nicer interior, though, than the
58 Regal's.

I am better with the rear than I am with the front. I have always found clowns and puppets creepy. This "face" looks too much
like that for my tastes. Kinda like Rachel Welch with the face of Curly or Moe.

But I agree, this would have been a neat novelty model. I like the side sweep better than anything they actually sold.

Same applies to the '61, which definitely has the face of Larry!

The 61 is something of an enigma ..... frumpy, dumpy, utterly bizarre, but somehow, like a bad itch, impossible to
ignore. I would actually own a 61. The 59 to me, is like a 57-58 on acid ... one bad trip !

The 61 stands alone as it's own oddity. The 59 has the other two years to compare it against. I know a lot of people
dig that over-exaggerated version of the previous years, but to me, they took it too far. If there had never been a
57 or 58 Dodge as we know them, and the 59 was alone on the pedestal, I might likely think of it like I do the 61 (?).

I mean, they are all cool in their own way. Some better than others, but this can be subjective to a person's taste or
nostalgic connection. I have no connection to either, but back in the day, the 61 was useless as a parts car and totally
WTF?, whereas the 59 was always a disappointment that it wasn't a 58 or 57. Today I like the WTF ? angle, so the 61
has become "cool", ... but the 59 is still no 58 !

Funny you should say that about "Larry". My brother and I have debated for 30 years just what the he!! was going on
at Dodge when they gave the green light to that design, and part of it is the front-to-back disconnect between the WTF?
fins and the "Larry" face out front !

I'm not a huge fan of the 1961 Dodge front grille, but I kind of like the reverse fins especially on the Polara where the lights come out of a torpedo tube, and I would'nt mind owning one if I got the chance, the two door hardtop is my favorite.

As for the 1959's I have to admit I really like them, especially the front end! they have so much character.

I used to have a 1959 Coronet years ago,and miss it very much. But you are right, for some people the front end was too much and I remember a mother pulling her kids away from it quickly while she was crossing the street as though she was scared of the front end...Chrysler made some very agressive front ends.
Mine had the speed minder and the mirror matic which were odd options on the coronet.
The Indi-color speedometer was cool too!

I think that there's a central trunk molding, with a gold dingle-berry on it, too.

There probably was some real discussion about where/whether to relocate the quarter panel chevrons.

Altho no one at the Corp asked for my 9-y.o. advice on this car's appearance, I have to believe that saner heads
prevailed, and that the consensus agreement was that this car was just an over-gilded 'lily' !!

My favorite description of the 58 Generic Motors' appearance was that their "chrome appeared to be ladled-on with a trowel".

That's kinda-what this poor 59's appearance resembles, to me.

Kinda makes you wonder: which-came-first-----probably the Regal treatment, which was decided to be applied
on the CAN-cars.

You can't be 'Regal', in 1959, but you can BE (in-) a Viscount!

Since the 1959 Dodge Regal was a mid-year model and the Canadian 1959 Dodge was on the market six months before the Regal was to be, I think you have the cart before the horse.

Also, compare the side trim on the Canadian Dodges with the side trim of the 1959 Plymouth. The Dodge side trim was the same as the Plymouth, with the exception of the front fender treatment on the Viscount due to the higher wheel opening on the Dodge. And the DeSoto Diplomat Custom used the same trim as the Dodge.
