Expert 5K+ Posts: 7207 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | I've seen these two cars listed multiple times over the years but this is the first time I remember seeing them described as unrestored original ultra-low mileage twin one-owner cars bought new buy a husband /wife. The are currently in Glendale, AZ but I'm sure I've seen them listed for sale in Alberta at one point a few years ago. Anyone else remember anything? I don't think the undercarriage and engine compartment could have survived 51 years and still look as good as this, un-restored! The color seems to be the ultra-rare for 1961 Dubonnet. Location: Parts Unknown | Ian ~ The inner fender panels are painted body color. Was this stock ? Seems VERY UN-stock to my senses. I am failing to remember what my 61 NY'er seats looked like, but these appear overstuffed (common on refurbished interiors). Shooting from the hip, I'd say this car in the photos has been heavily refurbished.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 566 Location: Wichita, Kansas | My thoughts exactly. How can someone possibly claim they are unrestored original. They are clearly restored, and like a lot of people, I've seen them offered for sale for several years. My 7000 mile 61 Polara that has not sat a day outside isn't close to clean underneath. What's so wrong with being honest, because as soon as someone buys the car, they'll find out it's not original. Inner fenders on 61s, though, are body color, not black (unless your body color is black...).

Extreme Veteran Posts: 320 Location: lakeview, ny 14085 | I had a 300G and the inner fenders were body color, of course the car was black. now that's funny. looks like they used the oil pan as a jacking point on that pictured car. tough to keep original paint on them when you wad them up like that. $250000 back in the day and coming back to that, yeah i'll hold my breath for that. those cars been for sale for over ten years that I remember.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with clones, they could be well done and very close to the originals, BUT they should be marketed as CLONES if that's what they are.

My white 61 NY'er did not have white inside the wheel well like that. Maybe it was undercoating that covered a white painted wheel well ?

What is this gizmo between transmission cooler line, in front of subframe, below oil pan? The gizmo is a transmission filter. I also have one like that on my -60 Fury since the guy who rebuilt my trans recommended that I put it on since the old TF is not equipped with a real filter just a screen. And for your interest, the inner fenders on my -60 Fury were painted the same color as the car. Regards from a rainy Southern Sweden

Expert Posts: 3887 Location: Northen Virginia | My Newport was not painted, only under coated. My new yorker is black so I cant tell. Interesting about the decal I think the only option for the Newport regarding to engines was the 413 like the one tested by the "uncle". So another flag for this pair.

I spoke to the old couple on several occasions. As many of you have surmised, they were extensively restored, but I believe they did start life as ragtops. Me and a buddy tried to purchase the pair when the old couple put them up for sale, but the current seller paid over $150K for the pair which was way too rich for us.

My living room window has a great view of Mt. Baker. Thanks for the confirmation that these 2 cars are not in original condition as the seller states. How about showing us some pics of your cars over on the Members Rides section? Edited by imopar380 2013-11-02 7:21 PM

Member Posts: 49 Location: Chuckanut Mountain, Washington | Well- Reviving a "zombie" thread, I ended up with the "lesser" of the two. I spent a long time discussing the dubious history of the car with Jeff Carter. So I knew going in that I'd be in for some "fun" when I started to take it apart. Switches wired backwards, brake drums not swaged to the hubs, steering knuckle and support nuts finger tight. Yes finger tight! And the car is loaded with awful Chinese parts. JC Auto has come to the rescue! I also seem to have a cylinder or two in the engine that are just along for the ride. And gross black sooty water comes out the tailpipe at startup so I'm praying it's a gasket and not a crack in the water jacket. In spite of the flaws, I love this car. Back in 1992, Jeff had a black 61 Newport Convertible. I missed it by mere minutes so my consolation was one of the Mystery Date cars. Ironically, I found this '61 while surfing the web looking for a '59 Desoto convertible! Hahaha! And Mr Bob- I almost moved to Chuckanut Mountain!

Regular Posts: 66 Location: Ferndale, WA 98248 | WOW - I am surprised the car you bought has so many issues. I am slowly transforming my Tahitian Turquoise 61 Newport convertible to a 300G tribute car. The grill is in, and I have the side spears and emblems. Acquired a complete interior from seats to door panels to center console (with working tach and tach drive distributor) but all the upholstery needs to be redone. Also have a mostly complete cross ram set up with 2903 carbs, air cleaners, block off plates, dash pot, linkage, and crossover pipe, but of course missing the exhaust manifolds. But I don't think it makes sense to install the cross rams on the stock low compression 361 which is still running in the car, so I'm looking for a 440 to drop in. The Newport's iron case 727 is not compatible with 1962 or newer engines, so I have a '63 aluminum case 727 that will work with the push buttons ready to bolt to a 440. Where are you located now, Chef?

Location: Parts Unknown | For the sake of the car, it could not have fallen into better hands. el Chefo is a picky SOB and a long time friend. Years ago I tipped him off on a 59 CRL sedan that he worked his voodoo on. We'd go on a jaunt somewhere, and he'd say to me "You here that ?". Nothing seemed unusual. We'd make the whole trip with him fussing over some impossible to hear noise. After a week or five, he'd show up again and show me a bearing with a score in it. We'd go for a drive, and I could not tell the difference. That 59 CRL had a niggling rattle in the body that drove him nuts. After repeated teardowns and fixes, it still eluded him. In the end, it was a Coke or Pepsi bottle left in the bottom of a rear door !!! Chef can correct any details I have grown foggy on.

Where are you located now, Chef? Well, while the issues weren't disclosed I went into it knowing there would be a bit of nonsense. For starts, it had been making the rounds with dealers for quite a while, so that's an indicator that there are issues. Google searches also revealed earlier adverts with tall tails or at least stretches of the imagination. Jeff and I had several lengthy conversations about the car as much as he was aware. I also had a third party inspection done, which, while they couldn't take the car apart, give me indications of issues. Basically the car was done to be trailered to a show and look good sitting on a show field. So, again, I knew it would be a few months of pleasant time spent underneath. The real bottom line for me when I bought it was, if I were to start from scratch and restore one (if a restorable one were to surface) I'd be into the car for about what I have into this one when done. Interesting what you plan to do with yours. When I had one of the "Mystery Date" cars, I was sort of doing something similar. I put some Fireflite interior parts and exterior trim on it and put in a 383 with 2x4 intake. I went back to a single 4 as the 2x4 was frightening in parking lots! Right now I'm on Lake Roesiger about 10 miles south of Granite Falls.

Well, to be fair, the car was a consigned item so the dealer was only as good as the info given. Older restorations are a true case of "caveat emptor". You can never know what the restorer did. So I wasn't phased. I did my due diligence and have no regrets. And to be fair, a lot of the parts are examples of how bad what is now produced is. A 180 degree experience from the available parts for my Corniche II (Bentley still makes close to anything for those still...) But yes, for the not so savvy buyer I can only imagine the heartache.

The rattles in the '59 Fireflite 4HT I got from Bill Gerrard were pretty insane as well. I think you caught fire on that car and your neighbor came running over with a fire extinguisher! A Firesmite? I guess I do get a bit OCD over little things like that. Try owning a Corniche II! That really sends my OCD into overdrive.
