Hi out there!I have a problem with my 56 powerflite.
The issue is when i put the car in reverse
it is allright but when i go back to neutral i always
have low gear but i can solve the problem by going to low and then back to neutral then it is allright. The same happens from reverse to drive i have to go via low ,then it takes both gear on drive.
I pulled the pan yesterday and all positions seems to be ok and the pushbutton cable is in right possition. The car has been so for many years but i did an oilchange and thought i could solve the problem once and for all but no.I can say that the old oil looked great and no sludge in pan .

What you describe is caused by either excess slop or too much friction in the shifter & cable. Lube up the shifter & cable and make sure they move smoothly. Check for slop at the cable connections and tighten them up. Check for slop or worn plates inside the shifter as well. Look carefully for excessive wear in any of the contact plates.

Maybe jack up the rear, disconnect the shift cable and try manually shifting the trans, see what happens?

Yes i will try tomorrow .I will look at the buttons and try to lubricate the cable. When i had the pan off the gears jumped right in perfectly and the car starts only in neutral never had any problems with the tranny other than the reverse-neutral and reverse-d issue.
