Guys,
I found a nice project but I'm perplexed as to what the value is. I think it's a fair price but I'm curious how much the option package affects the value in this case. Anybody willing to offer their opinion? I haven't seen the car yet but this is what the seller has said about it:

"I have a 1956 plymouth belvedere convertable that is 110% complete, this car was a special order with all power options, window, seats, top, power steering locks, power brakes and sway bars. this car is a resto in progress. the original engine runs, the tranny is a push button shift on the dash, the body is in excellent condition for the year i had the bad spots done allready, only a couple of dings on the car with original paint. I bought this car from my uncle that had owned it since 1958. the car is all covered up, but i can shoot you a pic from my cell phone of it before i took it to the body shop. reminder, this is a resto project, those of you who know oldies, know the work intelled to restore this rare car. $5500 obo"

Thanks in advance,
Mont

Anywhere from $200 to $20,000. I hope that helps
Your gonna have to look it over in person.

I have a frame off 56 Plymouth convertible I'm doing right now. I've had this and two others now for ten years, so whenever I see another 56 Plymouth convertible come up for sale, it's gotten my attention.

Condition is everything, a sad but complete one of these sold last year in LA for $9500. An incomplete, rusted one is being offered in MN for $6600 (he keeps changing his price). I've paid $7K for a basket case missing an engine.

Yours in excellent original condition has got to be worth $15K minimum. If we had photos to look at and the appearance was good, could be higher.

Fully restored to a solid #2, $25K and to a #1 show car, $35K+.

Richard

If the car is not a rust bucket and is running with all the parts present $5500.is very fair. I don't think he knows what he's talking about with the power locks?!?Sounds like it's worth checking out! They are great cars!I would know I have mine close to 30 years. HAPPY MOTORING! Victor..

I talked to the seller this afternoon and he said that it's a numbers matching drivetrain. I have an appointment in the morning to see it in person. From what I understand, there were only a couple of cancer spots that were cut and replaced. They were not bigger than 4" square. The kicker is that it's been completely torn down and it's ready for a rotisserie. I was looking for a running project but this is so cool that I'm not sure I can pass it up. How hard is it to reassemble one of these to a functioning status? I'll make sure to take plenty of pics no matter whether I buy it or not.

Given that it's torn completely down and not yet repaired for rust, I'd put the value at $4K tops. Not a whole lot of "numbers to be matching", the engine block serial number should begin with "P29". Torn down, I'll bet a lot of the pieces are broken (by naivety), lost, deteriorated (stored outside), and/or unidentifiable. The thousands of pieces are also awkward to store and transport. Just about all the value is going to be in the top mechanism, latches and bows. If the top mechanism isn't complete and in good condition, the car ain't worth buying. You especially want to check the front header bow and center latch. And if you haven't got the skills, space, or equipment to repair/replace the floors and trunk pan, you should pass.

I went to see it this morning. It's a nice car, considering that it needs restored and assembled. It looks like this car was stored inside up until recently. The seller had the outer body repaired by a shop. It has a little skim coat over the repairs but the ones I could feel behind didn't appear to have much at all. The bottom of the left fender needs repaired yet and the bottom of the right fender was welded but needs to be grinded. Eyebrows seem rust free. The bad part is the floors and trunk. The foot wells need replaced and the left & right sides of the trunk pan are swiss cheese. Although, the tire well is in good shape. More good news is that the top frame assy is still on the car and doesn't look worn out. In addition, he has a few extra parts for the top assy.

With all that said, I'll have to take Rbmain's advice and pass since I don't have the facility to do what's needed. I have a couple dozen pics I took if any of you guys are interested.
And here is the original ad. He said the phone is ringing off the hook and a couple other people are supposed to come see it today so be quick if you're interested.

I am interested in knowing what value you end up putting on that as I recently discovered a 56 ply convertible in my area. I am going out to have a better look at it next weekend. Dave

The only thing I had to go on was what Rbmain posted and the fact that "When the top goes down, the price goes up". My best guess (if this car was complete and assembled) would be $8-10,000. The unsurity of parts when the car is disassembled weighs heavily on the value of any project. Considering the condition of the body, I think that the value of this one as it sits is about $6000.

Why would you pay $500 more than he asked for it? Labor to remove and replace the floor of the car, front and rear ain't gonna be cheap, unless you do it yerslf. The plasma cutter, the mig or tig welder ain't gonna be cheap and the knowledge has gotta be there if you do it, and that knowledge did not come cheap either. So. you'll be buying a basket case, and yer gonna be hunting parts up until the day you tighten the last lugnut/lugbolt, and fire the engine up for it's inaguaral ride.I would not consider it worth a penny more that $4000.00 to $4500.00. But I ain't in the Plymie market. Tho mu hi-school girl friend had a 56 turquoise 6 cyl. rag top. (Would not pull itself out of its own way). . . .

The first three 56 Plymouth convertibles I bought had no engines at all.

I got a chance (sort of) to get a look at the 56 Ply vert near me. It was freezing cold and access to the car is not good nor was the lighting. Lots of junk stacked on it. It looks complete and has a pretty nice top on it. Being an Ohio car it does have some rust, but with four flat tires, I couldn't see under it very well. It does have an engine and trans and the story I got was that a failed water pump is what took it off the road. The gentleman that owns it is elderly and we agreed that I would come back when the weather breaks and I could remove it from the garage for a better look. We talked a little about price and we will probably settle at somewhere between 1200-1500. Dave

At that price, I would've immediately dropped a deposit on it, just so he doesn't sell it to someone else. That's a heck of a bargain. even if it's a rusty car.

Well, I tried to more than once but he said that it wasn't necessary and I didn't want to push it. He isn't actively selling it. I found out about it from a mutual friend. When I bought my Imperial (from a different person), he wouldn't take a deposit either. Basically said its yours if you want it and no hurry to remove it. That fellow didn't even count the money when I handed it to him, just put it in his pocket. It is like dealing with people from another era when a man's word is good enough. I like it. Dave

I learned my lesson years ago when looking for my 58 Plymouth. I found one, called the owner the next day and told her that i wanted it and I was mailing her the check that day and to mark the car as sold. She said OK.

When I called her a few days later to see if she got the check, she said that she was mailing it back because someone showed up the previous day, paid her cash and took the car with him.

Moral of the story: Money makes it legal, so you gotta find a way of getting the money into his hands before someone else does.

I hear ya Ron. I sweated that Imperial but finally I resigned myself to: it will happen or it won't. I feel the same way about this Ply. And you have to understand, this is not my dream car, I already have more projects than I can handle. I stumbled on to both of these cars quite by accident. If he called tommorrow and it was gone, so be it. If I do buy it, it will be only to resell or part out if too rusted. Not to gouge anybody, but make a few dollars to finance my projects I want to complete. I bought the Imperial figuring I could make a few dollars parting it out. But it turned out to be much nicer than I anticipated and it has really grown on me. So who knows...

I Bought this car 2 weeks ago. It seems that no one ever bought it when it was listed 7 years ago. The owner died and his brother listed it on KSL.com. I was the first caller and bought it for much less than the original asking price 7 years ago. This car is in amazing shape with solid floors. Rust out in the trunk and rust in the rockers. The car was built with the following options;
Power Steering
Power Seat
Power Windows
Radio & heater
Power pack engine
Dual exhaust
Clock mounted on top of dash
front bumper guards. One can be seen in the interior shot above with significant rust through. I was not aware this was an option in 56

The car was carefully disassembled with many parts bagged and labeled. Unfortunately the 1 wall shed leaked water and the rear seat bottom is completely rotted through. Also all the pot metal is bad, but it is complete and the motor is still free. Since I sold my 57 Dodge last winter, I'm happy to have gotten another forward look.
Does anyone know about the bumper guards? Were they an option? The car has always been a Utah car and I am very pleased with its condition. It still has the key fob from the dealership in Tooele where his uncle bought the car in 1958. I'm starting to gather the restoration parts now.
Kindest regards,
Scott in Utah

Wow, surprising it just sat there that long. If you are talking about what I think you are talking about, those are rear bumper wings. I think they were optional on Belvederes, and standard on Furys; but I'm not certain about the details. Nearly every '56 Plymouth I have seen has the front bumper guards.

My wife has a 56 convertible that has been in family since brand new. As a result our recent investment of 12K for significant body work, paint and new top was an emotional investment. Car looks and runs great (with exception of faulty directionals. I'll try to post a couple of picture to this note

Powerflite,
Thanks. that is what the parts are. I'll enjoy adding them on to the rear bumper when I'm to that point. Jim, thanks for your comments as well. This car is so solid! It is so much better than any other forward Look that I have found. I just wish I could have gotten it a few years earlier. I have gone through all the parts and are just missing the long thin quarter strips that are about 80 inches long and the under trunk stainless. I'll find them, thanks to all the great people on this site.
