Regular Posts: 62 Location: NY | Greetings, Currently working on a 56 Firedome wagon. When I start the car it runs ok most of the time but there’s bunch of air bubbles getting into the fuel Filter, which I have between the pump and carb. Then it will stall and I can’t get it running again without some serious priming. If I remove the tank line to the fuel pump and stick it in a 5 gallon gas can there are no air bubbles. So it appears to be somewhere between the tank and pump inlet. The fuel lines are new and I cannot see any leaks or fuel dripping. The tank is original and had it checked for Leaks before re installing it but maybe I missed something. Wondering if anyone has had a similar issue. Any guidance is appreciated.

This won't necessarily cause a fuel leak, but just let air in when the pump is going. Typically, a leak like this is coming from a rubber hose because it is cracked and old. If that isn't the case, then it would come from the hose connections not being tight. There is another hose from the line to the tank. Check that one too. If all is well, and you still have the problem, you could have a steel line that is rusted somewhere and letting air in, so you will have to check down the entire line to see if you can find the problem. Or...if your lines run close to the exhaust, they could be getting hot and vaporizing the fuel, causing the vapor bubbles you are seeing. If so, move the lines so they aren't exposed to hot objects.

I know on the 55 Desoto, there is a factory junction just below the driver's door (fuel line runs along driver's side frame rail for 55, but on passenger side for 56. Just FYI). Look for something similar. Also, check for a rubber hose from fuel line to tank, even though on the 55, the line connected directly to the tank. Ron

Regular Posts: 62 Location: NY | Thanks all gives me great info on where to start. Also not sure if I have the right fuel pump, any input on whether or not an Airtex 4609 would be a good application on a 1956 330 hemi?

Expert Posts: 4042 Location: Connecticut | The original fuel pump for 55-6 Desoto is part no. 1637366, which is a Carter 2241S. Best bet is to find the original, rebuild with modern kit from Then and Now and you'll be assured of the correct length arm as well as correct pressure (5-6 lbs.). See photos. Regular Posts: 62 Location: NY | Thanks again. I’ve troubleshot all the way back to the tank and it’s the tank that seems to be the issue. Not sure where the leak is, the pickup tube is soldered in do not really an option there. At this point I’d was thinking of replacing the tank, any idea on where to find one? I’ll also check out the fuel pump options but the one I currently have on the car seems to be working ok.

Never dealt with Hilltop, but it looks like they just want to make a sale. I'll bet it's darn expensive as well for this aftermarket pump. Ron

"Part Number: 1637366 [supercedes P/n 1323415, 1450707 & 2279908]" I've dealt with Hilltop on some hard (for me) to find 56 Dodge part. No problems. Just Sayin'

Regular Posts: 62 Location: NY | Powerfpite I’m not sure what you mean by sending unit, the one on my tank does not have a tube, just the cork bobber type setup. I’m looking for the gasket for it but having trouble tracking one down, it needs to be replaced but I’m not sure that’s the culprit. Thanks for the response
