Elite Veteran Posts: 1018 Location: Milwaukee Wisconsin | 4 door 1959 dodge door handles seem to release on the first catch/ striker and then won't open the door completely . I can open from the inside fine but not on the outside. what needs to be adjusted ? or are the latches just worn out?

Expert Posts: 4040 Location: Connecticut | On the door handle, there is a racheted extension on the inside of the door that mates to another racheted piece that is attached to the door lock mechanism. They are held together by a small hex head bolt. You access these via a rubber plug on the inside of the door near where the latch is. These are mis-adjusted. Loosen bolt, readjust to remove the play. Retighten, then test out. Ron

Elite Veteran Posts: 1018 Location: Milwaukee Wisconsin | Thanks Ron . I already checked into that adjustment with success. from what I can see........... it's in the latch mechanism where that movement from the door handle upward movement moves the mechanism where there is a pin and slotted rod on the insideof latch ........... the slotted rod on the latch moves a large pin , that movement is worn and elongated . If I move that pin just a little farther the door will open . either I need a new latch or weld the slot shut about a 1/8" . It just doesn't have enough movement to move that arm/ pin . also ........ I did the adjust that rod you suggested in the inner part of door thru that plug hole Ron. it's adjusted all the way .

Extreme Veteran Posts: 308 Location: Newcastle Australia | Typically on the rear door handles it's the outside handle that fails. There is a small S shaped link on the outside handle. This link collapses with use. This link was out of shape on all of my rear handles. I managed to pick up a NOS handle and made up a replacement for the other side. Even though you can freely move the handle, the internal components are not moving. Usually spraying some penetrant and working the mechanism will free it up. I'd at least give that a try before taking it apart.

If the pin is loose, no amount of spraying will solve the problem. You've already determined that it is the pin. So you need to remove the latch, then replace it. All 59 Mopars use the same latch. So shouldn't be that difficult to find. Ron
