He guys, I've been working on my buddy's 62 Custom 880 for a couple of years now. What started as a quick, pull the 361, freshen, replace turned into a massive project which involved replacing all suspension and steering wear items, complete chassis strip and paint, brakes....EVERYTHING. the only thing I haven't done is remove body panels, doors or interior.

The issue I'm having at the moment is, after removing and painting all the throttle and kickdown linkage I've forgotten how it goes back together. Some pieces are obvious but most are not. There's a pivot pieces that looks like it bolts to the bellhousing as a support for the main pivot on the firewall.

If anyone has a diagram of how the linkage goes, showing me how and where all the pivots go or a few photos I'd be eternally grateful! I probably would have been able to pull it off without taking photos if the entire engine and trans replacement hadn't gotten held up by all the painting and other stuff that wasn't initially planned for.

I built a 400 steel crank motor, .060 overbore, factory replacement pistons with a nice lopey cam.

The plan from the beginning was to use a set of long rams he had but I decided to put the 2 barrel intake and carb back on for fire up and break in as it was a known running carb. It seemed like a good plan to do that to get things dialed in a bit, timing set etc. Now I'm going to move the car from the building with the hoist to our other building that has a furnace before I run out of firewood. Which is why I'm trying to get the throttle linkage squared away now. It's got the multiple piece system that used all levers and rods as opposed to cable and kickdown rod.

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Wayne

Wow guys! I thought I'd be lucky to hear anything back by spring but You guys sent me exactly what I needed before I was done with my coffee break! The post of 57chizler appears to be exactly the one I'm looking for. If I have any other questions I'll post back.

Man...thank you guys SOOO much! I can already see where one of the parts went that helps me a lot.

Here we go!

You might want to visit Mymopar.com and see if they have any Factory Service Manuals (FSMs) that would help you. I see a 62 Chrysler one that would probably help:

There's a pivot shown on 57chilzer's pic. It is just below the arm assembly 2 and 3. My pivot looks a little different and there appears to be a bushing that's supposed to in that bracket that I don't recall ever being there but it's possible that I've misplaced it. Does anyone have a part number for that or a picture of that bushing? Even if getting it would very hard or impossible I may be able to make something if I have to.

Thanks,

Wayne

If this is what you're referring to, yes, some installations have a rubber grommet to isolate vibration. It's a simple rubber grommet.

No, actually the other end of that main pivot rod has a support. It bolts to the transmission bellhousing bolt hole. it looks like there should be a round one that just wedges in there but the opening is actually more of a triangular shape and appears to have a wedge shaped nylon bushing.

Looking at the diagram of yours, (57chlizer) That support, or whatever it is, looks different than mine. That one almost looks like it pivots too maybe or is at least adjustable. Is that what you're seeing? What I see looks like there's an adjusting screw. My bracket just sits stationary, again bolted to the bell housing, and the main pivot rod, (the long rod that goes toward the passenger side) gets supported in that bracket. But without a bushing in there the rod sits too low and can move around in that "channel". I have a lathe and some aluminum round stock. I could made a round bushing with groves in it that sets into that "V" and I can maybe come up with some way of retaining it. Of course I'd rather just buy the correct bushing but that might get tricky. I've been looking through the manuals and I'm struggling to find what I'm looking for. Maybe it's just me not knowing what I'm looking for. If anyone else is familiar with what that support is called and knows where to look it up maybe you could see if you are able to find it. I'm hoping this won't be all for not. We're putting long rams on there and from what I've been told it's fortunate that the 62 Custom 880 has all throttle/kick down linking in rods and pivots. I'm told that if the throttle was operated by cable we'd have a much bigger challenge making the dual carb set up work. But, I'm told, with it all being mechanical rods with adjustments we're much further along than if it had a cable. As always, thanks!

A pic of your setup would help.

I've got one but I'll take a better one and an overall pic.

Here's a couple of half way decent shots. I'm having a hard time getting a good shot at that angle in poor light.

Ok, in the first shot it's not a great pic but you can see that it supports the left end of the pivot shaft.

The second shot shows how the support bracket attaches to the bellhousing.

Edit: Third pic. this is the one I took with my phone, it turned out to be a much better shot. Edit Edit, it won't post it, I might need to save it as a different file format...pain in my butt! LOL

There's a hole at the bottom of the bracket that might allow the shaft to be kinda retained with a spring or something but it sure seems like it's missing a bushing.
I'm not talking about the hole you can see in the pic that is over the slot, that one is evidently used for aligning the pivot and is used for adjusting the kickdown.

Thanks,

Wayne

So, you think there should be a bushing at the red arrow? Appears not.

You may well be right but in that pic it sure looks like there's a raised area that probably couldn't be achieved by the stamping process. When looking at that part it looks like there's a bushing in there but maybe not. Without one, unless there's a method of retaining the rod in some way that holds it in the little notch to the lower surface of the bracket but not all the way into the "V", I haven't figured it out yet., I don't see how it can be retained. But I'll keep at it and keep you guys informed on my progress.

So, anyway, if anyone has any more information on how that rod can be retained, it must be held down tightly against the lower edge but not all the way into the "V", I'd be forever in your debt! LOL

We can take our time figuring this out. I still have to get the car over to the other building where I have a furnace and then remove the 2 barrel intake and figure out how to get the long ram intakes, carbs, and linkage on and how to make the linkage of the car and the linkage on the longram setup to work together. I'm having surgery on the 19th of December so the goal is to get the car over there, wrap up misc. portions of the project and then let it sit till I'm able to get around after my surgery. it's going to be a REALLY BIG surgery so it could be weeks, it could be months.

Thanks so much to everyone that has helped me out all throughout this project. It's been a greatly challenging project and I kinda like em that way. Otherwise anyone could do it right? LOL

Thanks,

Wayne
