When it shifts, it shifts solid and no issues once in gear. It doesn't slip when shifting 1st to 2nd while accelerating.
It seems to "slip" or pause[?] from reverse to forward and when I slow down to a point that it downshifts,
it will hesitate/slip between shift to 2nd but then shift solid. Fluid level is fine.

Will it get worse quickly or do this for a while. Will a fluid change help? Never dealt with this before and no idea what to expect.
Again, seems to be fine once in gear, should I rebuild before I tow this summer for 7 hrs one way?

Thanks for any help or suggestions.
Karl.

Could be time to drop the pan and make sure the pickup is clean / change filter there.
What fluid are you using? Latest of the GM /Mercon products broadly recommended for all old automatics.

I would suggest going thru all the linkage adjustments for the throttle and carb settings as outlined in the shop manual. Or do a search here, this is very critical regarding the shift patterns.
