Regular Posts: 57 Location: GREENEVILLE, TN | I have a '57 DeSoto. The rear end in this car has the keyed axle shafts, correct? Can the more modern flange style axle shafts be installed in the old axle housings? Does anything interchange between these old keyed axles and the 60's-70's 8&3/4" flanged axles?

Expert Posts: 3768 Location: NorCal | The E-body rear will work but the pinion angle is wrong, the '65-'69 C-body is the same width and has the correct pinion angle. It is possible to swap just the axle shafts by using the Green bearings with custom axles and modifying the '65-later brake backing plates. Doctor Diff might be able to supply the axles and bearings. https://www.doctordiff.com/

Custom axles are expensive so that you are typically better off just swapping out an entire rear end. Green bearings aren't as critical to getting the exact length of axle as are the tapered bearings, but you typically can't find a set of used axles without a rear housing to go with it, so it doesn't make sense to pursue this approach either.

Regular Posts: 57 Location: GREENEVILLE, TN | SO tell me if this is possible. We are rebuilding my Dad's 1965 Chrysler New Yorker replacing the 413 with a 440, trying to get 500 horsepower. I don't think the 8 3/4" will survive for long in the New Yorker with that much power. So I'm going to remove the 8 3/4" from the New Yorker and put it in the 1957 DeSoto. We will either get a Dodge 9.25 or a Dana 60 for the New Yorker. Now I want to use the original 8 3/4" from the DeSoto shorten it to fit my 1968 Barracuda and install new Moser Axle Ends. I want to use tapered roller bearings and a flanged axle shafts. Can I do this with the DeSoto 8 3/4"?

Might make it a bit easier to use green bearings but if your lengths are correct, should work.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | Your 8 3/4 in the New Yorker will be fine as long as you don't have a manual trans or auto trans brake. If you weld new ends onto the shortened DeSoto rear, you can make it exactly the same as an A-body rear, so there's no problem there. But the last I looked, the original tapered bearings are no longer available. So you will be getting green bearings with your new axles. Keep in mind that you will want to run your original DeSoto gears with the green bearings as they tend to sit a little further insdide and can collide with the newer axle spacer. The old DeSoto axle spacer is 1/4" shorter so it works out great with the green bearings.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8947 Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | the HP doesn't matter but the tire footprint does . the wider the tire , the more stout the pig needs to be . 500HP on street tires is not a problem for an 8 3/4 setup --------------------------------------later
