Finally got a set of 57 Mopar Scarebird brackets to try on my 56 Chrysler uprights/spindles. Scarebird said that they don't have anything for the 56 Chryslers (and Desotos). That said the photos of their 57 Mopar kit looked like they might work. As I suspected, the bolt holes line up perfectly (meaning the bracket will be centered around the spindle properly). There seems to be a bit of a clearance issue with the steering arm but it doesn't seem to significant. Nothing an angle grinder can't fix.

There might another issue with the lower end of the caliper. I don't have a caliper to test so that might or might not be true. Even if it is, it might just mean a bit of grinding on the caliper ear.

Some photos, starting with Scarebirds 57 Mopar kit photo, then two of mine from an hour ago.

I recommend you call AAJ and talk to him about it. He can probably give you advice as to what would be required to make '57-up brackets work on a '56 Chrysler spindle. He may even have a kit for it already to go.

BTDT. Roger at AAJ has a bracket for the 56 Chryslers. But it makes the caliper into a stressed member. The Scarebird bracket does not, or at least, less so.

We'll see which one I end up using.

Took a break from playing with the Alternator swap to see if I could clearance the Scarebird bracket so the 56 Chrysler steering arm doesn't conflict with the bracket and cause the bracket to sit non-square to the spindle.

Used my Bosch angle grinder with a cut-off wheel. Still needs a bit more work but it got cold and dark so I quit for the day.

The results so far (starting with a photo of the initial grinding (there was quite a bit more)). When I quit for the day, I took photos so I could see better how things are going. It's clear on one side of the arm but not the other so a bit more grinding will be needed. I'm using some 7/16" x 14 Lowes/Hillman bolts/nuts to temporarily attach the bracket to the upright. I will use OE bolts and nuts when the time comes.

Another day, another 10 minutes of grinding and checking and grinding and checking. (I broke my "No equipment noise on Sunday" rule so I didn't want to take too much time today.

Needs a few more minutes. One small touching point now.

Do you have the AAJ version? I am curious about what you mean for the caliper being a stressed member. Must be a lot different than the '56 Plymouth version as the only thing I didn't like about their standard 11" disc product was you had to tap the spindle.

Well I ground a bit more today. Grind, rebolt, check, grind, repeat. Probably 3 times trying NOT to go too crazy. Still needs more.

Took the Scarebird bracket off the 56 Chrysler spindle to do a bit more grinding (finally got enough ground away so no contact points with the steering arm).

While the bracket was off, I cleaned (wiped) the spindle and tried the AAJ spindle adapter (56 Chrysler spindle to 77 Cordoba rotor) and the Scarebird spindle adapter (57 Dodge spindle to 77 Cordoba rotor) to see how the distances from the square shoulder of the adapters to the machined spindle face compared.

Good news: both spindle adapters fit nicely on the 56 Chrysler spindle and the distances from the square shoulder to the spindle face are pretty much the same. 0.7265" compared to 0.7235" (i.e. 0.003" difference). I doubt that the difference will be an real world issue.

Rock Auto finally came through with the 11.75" diameter 77 Cordoba (or equivalent Mopar) rotors (Raybestos 7038R) and bearings (National A-17 inner and A-2 outer). Naturally, I couldn't resist trying things out on the spindle. For this first trial I used the AAJ spindle adapter.

The spindle adapter fits nicely in the A-17 inner bearing. Everything went together nicely. Rotor spins nicely. *I did not check whether I could get a cotter pin through the castellated spindle nut without modifying the nut* (Tomorrow)

Tomorrow (or the next day) I will do this again with both the AAJ and the Scarebird adapters and then their respective brackets. This next time I will take measurements. (And check the castellated nut issue).

The killer will be the calipers. AAJ wants 77 Monte Carlo calipers and Scarebird wants 1990 Chevy Celebrity HD calipers. I don't know how they compare but I know that I will have to make a decision as to which bracket I will be using very soon. *BUT* I will not use the AAJ bracket without some additional reinforcement (gussets) at the "weak" spot.

For now (no bracket):

the AAJ adaptors are these to suit 11" rotors or 11.75" as with the scarebird. ?
Thanks Geoff

Both are supposed to be set up for the same 77 Cordoba 11.75" type rotors.

AAJ called them 77 Dodge Monaco. Both end up being the Raybestos 7038R, not the 11" Raybestos 7032R.

If I am going to remove the D500's 12" x 2.5" 56 Chrysler front center plane drum brakes, I wanted a decent sized rotor. Hence the 11.75" one.

That size rotor can cause caliper interference with the wheel, check into that.

Checked. Thanks.

Running 15 x 7" 85 Dodge Diplomat Cop car wheels. I think that is moot. Both kits, or at least the Scarebird kit, work with 14" wheels.

Lovely (enough) day today to play outside in the sun. No rain. No wind. About 45F (good enough - in the sun).

Decided to play some more with the Scarebird 57Mopar bracket(s) and the 56 Chrysler upright. Mounted the bracket on the spindle but only finger-tighted the trial mounting bolts (more on that later).

Tried the 77 Cordoba rotor with both the Scarebird and the AAJ spindle adapters (the ones that were 0.003" difference in distance from the spindle base face) and the inner and outer bearings.

Good news: No clearance issues with the mounting bolts and no rubbing between the rotor and bracket.

Bad news: The bracket was sitting crock-eyed to the rotor. Two issues:

1. I guess I still need to clearance the bracket a bit more. I didn't notice that the bracket rocked on the spindle base until I was dismantling the trial set up. I thought that I had clearanced the bracket to the steering arm enough. NOPE. Still needs a bit more to remove the "rock"

2. I should tightened the trial bracket mounting hardware with a wrench and a socket, not just my fingers. (DUH)

The OE castellated nut does NOT go on far enough to clear the cotterpin hole near the end of the spindle. Would need some judicious filling to solve that problem. *HOWEVER*, the castellated nuts provided by Scarebird have deeper slots and probably won't need modification.

Weather is going to be wet for the next few days so I might not be able to test this all again, after better clearancing the steering arm to the bracket.

I'm going to have to commit to buying a 1990 Chevy Celebrity HD caliper very soon if this (successful trials) keeps up.

Photos from today:

Did a bit more grinding and testing and grinding and testing. Might need a tiny bit more. I might start on the actual steering arm at this point (only a few thou needed).

Bolted the bracket to the spindle plate and tightened the bolts with a wrench and a socket. Added the Scarebird spindle adapter, the inner bearing, the rotor, the outer bearing, the bearing thrust washer and the Scarebird spindle nut.

The Scarebird spindle nut does clear the cotter pin hole (I used a piece of coat hanger to prove the point). The bracket sits better than yesterday and, I presume once I really finally provide full clearance between the steering arm and the bracket, things will be even better.

Today: (Under my car port since it was threatening rain - which came just as I got done):

I'm going to have to commit to buying a 1990 Chevy Celebrity HD caliper very soon if this (successful trials) keeps up.

Bought the Celebrity calipers from Rock Auto on Monday and they were delivered today (Thursday).

Looks like they will work for my 56 Dodge D500 (the red markings on the back of the bracket = the D500 steering arm) but maybe not for the 56 Chrysler/Desotos (the black markings (and the gray putty)).

I will test both either later today or tomorrow.

Here is the caliper mounted to the bracket (yes, I know I have the wrong caliper on the bracket (the bleed screw is down, not up)):

Couldn't wait until tomorrow. Had to at least test the Celebrity caliper and Scarebird bracket on the 56 Chrysler/Desoto spindle.

Surprise Surprise Surprise (think Gomer Pyle). Not a problem: the caliper totally clears the 56 Chrysler/Desoto steering arm (or vice versa). There is one point where there is a "nub" on the caliper that comes within 0.5 mm of the steering arm but that would be easy to solve with an file or angle grinder if it really was an issue.

We might have a winner! If it works for the 56 Chrysler steering arm, it will be an non-issue for the 56 D500 steering arm.

Now to test with the rotor to make sure that the caliper is evenly "centered" over the rotor.

Tom: I agree. Those Grade 5s are from Lowes and are only being used to determine whether this would even work (or not).

When/if I make the actual installation, I will use Grade 8 bolts and nuts, probably 7/16 x 20.

Those Lowes bolts and nuts (HILLMAN brand) are 7/16 x 14. The OE bolts were 7/16 x 20 but the shoulder is too long to reuse.

*Almost* the last test. Removed the caliper from the bracket and added the 77 Cordoba Rotor (and bearings). Then I added the 1990 Celebrity caliper back on the bracket. Looks good. But I won't know for sure until I pony up and buy some pads for the Celebrity caliper. That should be the last test. (MAYBE)

Also tried the same BH36773 caliper hose that DelS used on this AAJ 11" front disc conversion on his 56 Dodge Custom Royal. The hose is 15.5" long and I think that it will be fine. Scarebird lists 12", 15" and 17" hoses as possible options. I went with the BH36773 because I know that it is compatible with the OE brake plumbing lines.

There is plenty of clearance between the caliper and the 85 Dodge Diplomat Cop Car wheels I am running. About 5/8" at least.

For fun, tomorrow, I might dig out one of my OE 15 x 5.5" 56 Dodge D500 wheels (same PN (1635 360) as some 56 Chrysler and Desoto wheels) to check the clearances. I am quite sure that things will be fine. (MAYBE)

Nice and sunny and dry here today.

Grabbed an OE 56 D500 wheel from storage and placed the 56 Chrysler upright, Cordoba rotor and Celebrity HD caliper assembly into the wheel. Mostly good clearance. However, there is one point where the caliper is within about 1/8" of the wheel. The good news is that this test was with the unloaded caliper and it was fully extended into the wheel. With pads and use, the caliper will actually pull *OUT* of the wheel, increasing the clearance.

That said, I had to double check the assembly in the 85 Dodge Diplomat cop car wheel. ( It's fine. (I knew that ))

(I have no idea how this is supposed to work on 57-61 14" Mopar wheels, seems tight with 15" wheels)
