Veteran Posts: 189 Location: Northern Illinois | hello, was checking the operation of my fuel gauge (55 dodge cr converted to 12v with 12v gauge) bought a 10-80 ohm sending unit, gauge does not sweep until the sender is at full range (10 ohm) it goes to full and stays there, move the sender arm back and forth and stays at full, until i shut the key off. checked the sending unit sweep ohms, whent from 10 to 80 full-empty. maybe i have the wrong ohm sending unit? please advise!! Extreme Veteran Posts: 443 Location: Beaumont TX | I had this trouble on my 1955 plymouth which is still a 6 volt. The fuel gauge and the fuel sending unit have to match. They both have to be 6 volt or they both have to be 12 volt. I had a 6 volt gauge and a 12 volt sending unit and to fix mine, I got a 6 volt sending unit for the tank. You are going from 6 to 12 volts. Not sure exactly how that works but I think the sending unit and the gauge on the dash have to be a matched set so to speak. Veteran Posts: 189 Location: Northern Illinois | i was reading into that, it seems the very early 12 volt systems used a higher resistance sending unit (0-200 ohms). this would make sense why the sender i have (10-70 ohm) would only work on full. question is where can i find a 0-200 ohm sending unit? been thinking of buying a potentiometer to confirm this | ||

I have a description from my1961 Motors shop manual on how to test & adjust both the sending unit. Extreme Veteran Posts: 443 Location: Beaumont TX | All fuel level sending units in 1956 cars will be 12 volts so it seems like you can just get one from a '56. Have you asked Big M if he has a good used one? here is one on ebay but it has a crazy price and not 100% sure it is for 12Volt.. I would try Big M. Veteran Posts: 189 Location: Northern Illinois | hello all!, with the help of a fellow member i figured out the workings of my fuel gauge. i tested the gauge with a 200 ohm potentiometer, it sweeps from empty to full like its supposed to. now the issue is finding a correct ohm fuel sender. i purchased 2 units (vans and some california place) and both were wrong. does anybody know where to get the correct unit?. thanks in advance Tony | ||
