Not saying that you are wrong but there were both Custom Sierras and Custom Suburbans. Both had the pot metal headlight "doors" with the thin chrome trim, like a Custom Royal Sedan or Lancer.

But we have seen Sierras with chrome headlight trim and a chrome fins before too:

So either the chrome tail fins were added *OR* the headlight doors were changed at some point.

Why didn’t the 56 Dodge wagons have the same rear sheet metal with larger fins as the 1956 coupes, sedans, etc? I’ve always wondered why they decided to tack on that chrome piece.

It wasn't just Dodge. Even the senior 56 Chrysler and Desoto wagons were just a rehash of the 55 wagons, with modifications to the front grill, etc. and tacked on (but different design) taillights.

I am guessing that because they knew that there was going to be a complete re-design for 1957, they decided not to spend the money on updating the rear quarter and taillights on the 56 Chrysler, Desoto and Dodge wagons.

That doesn't explain why the 56 Plymouth wagons got properly updated taillights. Defies logic.

Exactly! I was going to point out that about the Plymouth wagons. Maybe the logic was that Plymouth, being the most affordable make and largest seller, should get the full treatment for the wagons...but then that leaves Chrysler’s most prestigious models with tacked on fin ornaments that look like afterthoughts.

*IF* I owned a 56 Dodge wagon I would want to find a 56 Dodge sedan parts car and remove the rear quarters, etc. and graft them on to the wagon shell to make it a true 56 Dodge not a 55 with chrome fins.

Will never happen - except in my dreams.

At least I can mock-it up (see below). Looks much better in my mind.

Can you imagine how cheated the buyers of the ‘56 models must have felt when the new for ‘57’s came out? I can just see some guy in a suit driving by the Plymouth dealership in the 56 Belvedere he saved up for and bought new, only to catch a glimpse of the new 57’s through the showroom window. I can picture the look of shocked disbelief on his face as he gazes upon Chryslers newest creations. He probably drove straight to the nearest bar and spent the next month kicking himself thinking “dammit! If only I had waited!”
I’m sure many 56 buyers were secretly envious everytime they saw one of the 57’s on the road.

Dave, you said above: «So either the chrome tail fins were added *OR* the headlight doors were changed at some point. »

Most likely the chrome tail fins were added than headlight bezels. Otherwise they should be add a windshield upper molding as well. Anyway the cowl tag cleared up this issue…

By the way: Dave: Happy Birthday!!! Best Wishes!!!

I agree! It makes the car. Chrysler should have done it that way from the factory.

What cowl tag? Where? I looked. I didn't see it.

Thanks for the birthday wishes.
