Extreme Veteran Posts: 351 | I am an old Mopar mechanic with a poor memory working on a 56 Dodge Hardtop. Reading threads, I found Dave F's thread (http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=67458&posts=21&start=1) on his battle with carpet and the inspection cover. I followed that lead and made a full gasket from a piece of EPDM roofing material I acquired. (Could not find a piece of nitrile). I will still fill some gaps where there is a difference in shape between the floor pan and the inspection cover with SikaFlex. Glad you found my thread for some guidance (good and bad). I think I like your single piece solution better than mine but both work. Veteran Posts: 148 | Great fix on your access panel issue, Del. I imagine many have tried a bead of latex caulk as a fix for that issue, too. What was the factory method for a seal between the two panels? I looked at the product you used and noticed one that also came up as a possible candidate with and extra feature - self sticking. https://buymbs.com/p-113-mfm-peel-seal-self-stick-roll-roofing.aspx?... I imagine if someone contacted the company and explained the intended use of their product, they'd be willing to sell a smaller quantity for that purpose than one a roofer would want. Let us know how that worked out for you, please.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 351 | I haven’t looked at my thread for a few days, excuse the tardy response. NC Adventure.....The EPDM I used was from roofing supplier who was willing to part with a small piece. Not Peel n Stick. GREG....I never thought of the tape, thanks. Next step is to lay sound deadening.

Expert Posts: 1906 Location: Ontario, Canada | Hi Del, Let's take another look at this. It isn't an inspection plate, it is an access plate. It is there to allow EASY removal of the steering gear up into the car ( rather than underneath) and to adjust the angle and final positioning of the steering column to the dash. This is important to eliminate squeaks etc. over the road. You can loosen the three frame to steering gear bolts, carefully adjust that shim and tighten everything to precisely fit the dash yoke. All from in the car!! Not sure what they did in 56 but 57/58 used no gasket, just putty tape. Here is a pic of my 58 where I had to remove the steering gear to send for rebuild. Greg

Expert Posts: 1906 Location: Ontario, Canada | My pic was too large!! Try again. BTW, when I removed the plate all I had to do was gather up the putty tape and reuse it! No big deal at all! Greg (image.jpg) Attachments ---------------- image.jpg (158KB - 188 downloads)

Expert Posts: 4042 Location: Connecticut | Gray plumbers caulk. Buy a brick of it. Roll out a thin bead and put between the access panel and the floorboard. Then tighten the sheet metal screws that hold the panel in place. Ron

Extreme Veteran Posts: 351 | Hi Greg, inspection/access, I’m old, memory failure??. Ya, I picked up some body tape. Same kinda stuff. The epdm gasket was more for a seal around the steering column. Now working on what you are doing, sound deadening, etc. Del
