How 'rare' are windshield washers in a 58 Chrysler?

Mine has that feature, though I probably won't bother restoring it. It looks as though a bunch of wires run to the foot switch/pedal - is that so the blades will operate when the pedal is depressed and the water squirts out?

I believe the floor button only operates the washer pump. The wiper switch is still needed to operate the wipers. The two functions weren't tied together until years later.

On my '56 there is an add-on that will start the wipers when you depress the foot switch which is only the washer pump. Otherwise there is no reason to have any wiring attached to a purely mechanical pump.

I don't know what it is I'm looking at...I guess I need to spend more time studying it. But, above the high beam switch there is a flat looking 'pedal' that I think it the washer pump (mechanical). It also has a bunch of wires running to it that don't look to be add-on.

So here is the pedal - see the wires running to it?

My 58 dodge has the same set up
It also started the wipers and squirter
The squirted bladder was ruined
I replaced it with an electric unit
It is in the engine compartment.
I tied a micro switch to the pedal
It activates the electric unit
It works great

The windshield washers were an option on all Chrysler cars in the late 50's, wether you had the single speed or variable speed wipers. If installed at the factory, the washer pedal had a co-ordinator switch built in, that would turn on your wipers when you squirted the windshield. But, you could also get them as a dealer installed option or as a do-it-yourself kit. These didn't have the switch built into them.

Old posting but does anyone have wiring diagram for these factory installed washer switches... I do have the switch with wiring but no idea where they should go...

Found this for 58 imperial. Colors are likely going to be the same
