It would be more correct to say that "3" means the engine used:

1 - L6 230CID
2 - V8 325CID
3 - V8 350CID

Coronet could has 1, 2, 3 (on Wagon) engines; Royal - 2, and Custom Royal - 3

I disagree. The Royal could have come optional with a 350 as well, but was still designated as LD2. Also the D500 models were LD2 for both Coronet & Royal, but LD3 for Custom Royal even though all of them have the same engine.

LD1 = 6 cyl. Coronet
LD2 = 8 cyl. Coronet & Royal
LD3 = Custom Royal & Regal Lancer

This car was not originally a Spring Special, according to the build date. So someone added that trim on there.

I may have missed it, but did anyone point out the motor number on the IBM card? This was done until early in the 1958 model year and then for some reason discontinued. My Regal lancer built in Jan '58 has it, my buddy's built a month later does not. This is your ability to identify a "numbers matching" car. It's interesting that it's printed giving the intended motor ordered and then handwritten confirming the match. You will also find this number stamped on the frame (somewhere). Mine is stamped on top of the frame rail under the driver's seat. I never knew it was there until the body was removed. This number is also not present on my friend's car frame and we scoured every inch looking for it. Beautiful car, almost done as a Regal Lancer convertible in those colors.

Like this?

All the 56 and 57 Dodge IBM cards that I have seen (and saved images of) have the engine number either stamped on the IBM card or written on.

I have always wondered about the advertised horsepower of these cars. As far as I can research, the 58 Dodge 361 D500 rated at 320 hp is the same as the 58 Desoto Adventurer 361 rated at 345 hp.
I am thinking it must be only the advertising department showing more power for the upscale Desotos and Chryslers.

More likely the advertising department downgrading the power of the Dodge motor. It looks like the camshafts were the same, so they are very likely to have the same power output, though it is unclear if they used the 1739607 or 608 cam.

The Dodge D500 would be a single 4 barrel where as the Adventurer would have dual 4 barrels.

Not an expert on the D500 Dodges but I owned a 58 Fury with the dual Quad 350 that was only rated at 305 hp.This was a strong running engine with the same heads as the Desoto Adventurer and I believe also the same cam. Hard to believe it was 40 hp less.

Yes I think the HP figures were adjusted to make the sales.

Yes, the '58 Adventurer had the same cam and heads. But unlike Dodge and Plymouth engines, the Desoto Adventurer had 10.25:1 compression ratio. The increase in compression was achieved with domed pistons. It's still kind of hard to belive the horsepower increased that much with a slight bump in compression.

Are you talking about the Desoto hemi or the big blocks. The Plymouth Fury and the Dodge D500 big blocks had 10 to 1 compression and I have never seen anything written that the Adventurer had 1/4 point higher. Not to start an argument but where did you find this info?

"Normal" (non-Adventurer) 58 Desoto compression ratios:

And, if you believe Hemmings:

"The chassis, still a separate X-braced frame design, also cradled Chrysler Corporation's 361-cu.in. engine. Introduced in 1958 as a replacement for the costly-to-build Hemi, the 361—available in an array of horsepower configurations—was dubbed the 361 "Wedge" due to the wedge-style combustion chambers cast into the cylinder heads. Those inserted into Adventurers featured dual four-barrel carburetors. Coupled with a 10.25:1 compression ratio, the new V-8 was rated for 345 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. A TorqueFlite automatic transmission was standard issue."
