Hey guys!

I'm new to the forum here. I have a 65 Satellite and a 72 Cuda and now I'm looking at a 56 Savoy. It's a 4 door with an overhead valve V8 and a 4V carb and a 3 on the tree. Would that be a 277?

Anyway, I'd be the 2nd owner and It's been parked since around 1977. I know very little about these cars and I thought that I'd sign on here for some advice. It seems that you can get a quite a few parts from Rock Auto but I'd like to find out what's going to come up for me and where to search parts.

Thanks

Plymouth used two different V8 motors in '56. The first one was a 270 Dodge poly engine, which is similar to the 270 hemi motor. The second one was a 277, the first "A" poly like the later 318 poly motors. It is easy to tell them apart as the water outlet comes from the water pump on the Dodge, and from the intake on the 277. The valley cover is integral with the intake on the 277 as well, and separate on the Dodge motor. Rockauto is a good start for parts, but obviously won't have everything you need.

I have a short video clip and can compare it to internet pictures so I'm fairly certain that it's the 277, is this a Poly head motor?

It also appears that 3 of the door handles are broken. I may have heard of a cast piece in them that can break. Is this the case and can they be repaired?

Thanks

Welcome, where in the country do you live? A good source for parts is John Foley (BigM on this site) in Williams Ca. He has a salvage yard with lots of old Mopars. Many of our members also have spare parts, just let us know what you need. Of course the biggest problem with these old cars is rust and it is very hard to find new or replacement body parts so we have to find used parts or make them.

Further to what Powerflite (Nathan) said, the 270 was a Dodge based motor used before Plymouth was ready with their 277. Both are "Poly" (polyspherical head) engines. The 270 engine has valve covers that have curved scallops (like a roller coaster). The 277 engine has "saw tooth" scallops so they are easy to tell apart at a glance.

Thanks, my video isn't the best for detail but I'm fairly certain now that it's a 277. After looking at your pictures, I see the A vs LA resemblance. Can the LA timing cover and water pump be used on the 277?

Typically, the spot weld between the tangs inside the door handle will come loose and the tangs separate to prevent them from working anymore. The solution is to bend them back together and weld them together again. This is assuming that your latch still works properly.

56 Plymouths and Dodges used the same door handles. There are several currently available on eBay including these decent ones for a good price:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/403007139033?hash=item5dd518ecd9:g:2zUAAOSw...

I swear there is a LH and RH one there on eBay, each for around US$40.

I understand that these cars have 5x4.5" wheel bolt pattern.

Will a 245.60-15 tire, 8" wheel with a 4.5" backspace fit on all 4 corners?

Thanks

235x60 on a 7" rim is about the widest that will fit. Even that requires trimming the rear lip of the quarter panel.

OK, good.

It so happens that I have some Cop wheels with those exact tires to use as rollers.

We'll see.

Thx

Another data point: I am running 15 x 7 Mopar Cop wheels on my 56 Dodge with 235/75/15s and I had to trim the middle section of the rear wheel well inner lip (the horizontal bit) by about 3/4".

The area that I thought needed trimming:

The trimmed bit:

Good info guys. I've bought the machine but I don't really plan to begin thrashing on it until spring. The plan is only to bring it back to a safe drivable state and go from there. I'll be collecting parts until then. Brakes, bushings, etc.

Thaks

Well, I'd like to add a picture of the old girl, but the pictures that I choose are coming out way too big and pixelated. She's has 110k miles and she's been parked since the late 70s, I'm the second owner. I have the original title and the date is December 19, 1955. She's had a repaint and there's a couple of dings from all of the stuff being moved around while in storage.

This is not a plug for my YouTube channel, but I do have a video coming out today about The Nats in Columbus plus I have a clip of this car that starts around the 4:00 minute mark.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7jvKzJwxX4

I don't plan on starting on her until next March at the earliest and I'm going to be picking up parts in the mean time.

I may need to have some keys made. Is the door key and ignition the same and the trunk key is separate?

Thanks

I went to the barn to pull the ignition switch to have a key made and I took some pictures.
It's been "fixed up" in the past and the sill plates actually say Dodge. They also have a what I think is a 1951 Chrysler Windsor Deluxe.

Nice, interesting fabric on the seats as well. The 201 body code stands for Savoy, 4dr sedan, and the E is for the Evansville, Illinois assembly plant. Your car was the 2043rd Savoy 4dr sedan built there. The Chrysler looks to be a 1952 Windsor.

Thanks PF. It's interesting that it's the 2043rd car off of the assembly line. Evidently the first car was 1001, Chrysler did the same, as you probably know, with the VINs on later cars. They started at 100,000 and went up from there.

I know that Chrysler Historical is on hiatus, it seems. I've been trying to get an IBM car for my 65 Satellite for a while. Did these cars have build sheets and are they in the usual places in the car.

I'll be asking you guys a bunch more questions.

Thanks

The build sheet from my Los Angeles built Savoy was under the rubber mat on the passenger side and had become one with the floor paint & undercoating. Mostly unreadable at that point. But I don't know where the Evansville plant would have put it.

Places to check for build sheets:

1. Over the gas tank.

2. Stuffed into/sort of under the rear seat.

That, at least was practice with GM, and I wouldn't be surprised if Chrysler did something similar.
