Here is the Trim Tag and IBM card on my 56 Dodge D500-1. It is a Custom Royal Lancer 2 door hardtop. There is practically no infomation on the tag although It does have a 4 code on the far right top. The Ibm card has a lot of information it take a lot of time to figure it out but once you understand more about it you can find most of the infomation on a car. Getting a complete list of codes would help. It is my experience that the 56 Dodge is one of the hardest to find codes on.

I've been researching Tim's car a lot, over the years; basically, to break the 56 codes, we need to get a Broadcast
Sheet, to provide additional, corroborating information.

Tim, I did discover one new piece of info, though; does your car have any tinted windows, or possibly, power
windows?

Could the "500 SERIES" stamping have anything to do with it being a Dual Four Barrel? I know of several OEM D500's that do not have this stamping (and do have the (K)D500 engine number prefix).

Jim, no, the "500 series" merely confirms the D500 provenance.

BTW, the code that I found on the IBM card, for tinted windows (and/or, power window lifts) is the "1", all by itself, on the top row of the IBM card.

In fact, officially, the 1956 D500-1 race car's provenance has not yet been completely verified on the IBM card, although there are several individual codes on it where one-of-which will eventually be confirmed as being the 'magic' number.

d500neil - 2009-01-11 3:02 AM Jim, we're talking 1956, here.

I was well aware of that and know IBM punch cards differ through the years, and even within the production year.

Looking at Tim's IBM punch card above, in what matter does May 1956 differ from October 1956 (1957 model year) when it's concerned special equipment, and could the punch position represent something else then as is printed on the card itself?

Tim's card above doesn't show it very well, but doesn't card column 63 has "Specl. Carb." printed? And wouldn't any punch in that column indicate a special carburetor, which of course could be any special carburetor, like i.e. the Police Special?

Yes, it is important to point out that year to year many codes changed and they were not all the same for the different lines which compounds the difficulty. This is very confusing and makes code breaking without a direct year and line list of codes a long drawn out process. Without a factory guide available the process of finding dealer orders or invoices where codes are described or any factory document such as an Ibm card and a survivor car to help compile more data is what we are left with at this point. I have had help from many people over the years and it seems that a lot of people have had at least a small piece of information, it would be great if all this could be compiled. The hard thing is to contact all these people again. The Ibm cards are a lot of work too and some experts pointed out to me codes I didn't notice or didn't understand the way to read them. Now when I look at it I say wow how did I read that code again? Giving it a go: Column 63 64 and 65 are noted Special Order and like the box across the top 017 the punches show codes 630, 641, 657 and what these are is not known at this point, when looking at Gary Richards Special Order car codes they were 632, 645, 657. Both cars having code 657 in common. Both cars also have code 359 and 369 in common which are unknown codes, I believe one of these is the DFBCG code. Garys and my car also share the same tranny and axle codes which I believe means they were both Overdrive with 4.10 8 3/4 axle. Codes Trans 332 (known) and axle 314 and 323. My understanding for the Axle codes 314 = 83/4 323 =4.10 ratio. Tim

It's funny (not) how no one (I've ever encountered) seems to have obtained their car's 1956 Broadcast Sheet.

There are at least three slightly different versions/upgrades/modifications to the 1957 Dodge Broadcast Sheet.

Neil and Tim,

Do we know that their ever was a broadcast sheet in 1956? Was there one in 1955? I am the original owner of my car (my mothers) so I can verify that what is on it now is what it came with (with known exceptions). I would be willing to help with a decode of 1956 as much as I can. Let me know if I can be of any help. I also have all of the original paperwork for my car if that is of any additional help. I have yet to get the ibm card. I didn't see much reason to get it since I believed it to tell me little more then I already knew about the car. Perhaps I should reconsider. How much for the ibm card now? $75? For 55 Dodge owners there is extensive research available, maybe not easily but available. Mike Peterson years ago found a bunch of 55 Dodge paper work from a Putnam Motors in Indiana and proceeded to document other vehicles in the field. The work is quite extensive and covers 55 pretty well. I have 65 pages of intense research, and there are still some mysteries but very very well done. It definitly shows how complex the dealer codes were and how running changes effected model content. I have had it for years and I don't know if it is readily available. If this could be done for 56 it would be cool, but the access to the dealeship documents was the Key. Maybe there will be some discoveries like this for 56. Til then I guess it could be done one car at a time.

Dealers can be a good resource, so I've learned. I have this other brand 1964 car and went searching for a dealer that was around - here in The Netherlands – way back when this car was built. I found one and visited them with that car. I knew having that 1964 with me would start some enthusiasm which could possibly lead to something. And it did. Turned out they had several dealer and factory documentation on that specific car. Among it were complete parts catalogs from several years. The later years helped me in a great way to translate the 1964 part numbers to their later number system and thus to order my parts for that specific 1964 car over the counter. Many parts still available!
The dealer also had several build specifications that helped identify my car as having the police apprehender (performance) option.

I tried the same for my 1957 Dodge, but without any success. Mostly because Chrysler was hardly sold here way back then, let alone Dodge.

During my road trips in the USA I always try to visit the older Chrysler/Dodge dealerships. Although I obtained era correct dealer license plate frames from the dealer that sold my 1957 Dodge CRL D500 new in 1957 (Walther-Williams in The Dalles OR, as obtained from Chrysler Historical, together with the build sheet), I never succeeded in obtaining any info we’re looking for here. Could be because I don’t have my car with me during these visits, to start the mutual enthusiasm.

Now, where am I gaining at? I guess you can guess by now!

Why don’t you all take your car out for a ride to the nearest dealership that was around when your car was built, and try the same! Maybe you already have obtained your cars info at Chrysler Historical and know the cars original dealer. This way we could gather a lot of information and when combined here, we could finally solve a lot of these heritage quests.

I wish there were a Dealer in the Denver area that could help. The Dealers in my area hardly have any connection to the past mostly because starting in the late 70's mom and pop dealers slowly were phased out and then in the 90's dealers super sized and this usually meant moving to new buildings and even less ties with the past. My car was sold by Standard Motors in Denver and it has been closed for 40 years or so and it was a major Dodge Dealer here. I can't think of a dealer that would have any ties to the 50's and I have lived here since the 60s. Furthermore in rural areas the dealers have disappeared as well, no going to a dealer and getting 50 year old information around these parts. There may be something out there some where but it would take a lot of luck and/or effort to track it down.

Same with Walther-Williams in The Dalles, OR. They closed some 40 years ago. But I just went there and asked around. Small town. Pretty soon I met with the grandson of one of the two owner and he still had some things at home, among which were that dealer license plate frames I have on the car now. No documentation, but a lot of nice stories about racing Dodge in the 50s. I don't know it all off of my head, but I wrote it all down. There was a women who raced Dodge D500 or even D501. A lot of people still knew her, as it seemed to be quite extraordinary to have a woman racer.
I spent two days in The Dalles and couldn't find the time to meet everybody. I did meet an old crippled guy with his all original 1957 Dodge CRL D500. Amazingly still driving it around daily.
What I’m trying to say is, don’t give up when that pop ‘n’ mom dealer no longer exists. Their files could have been taken over by the next dealer. Or you could try to find their kin, as I successfully did. And if I can do that from The Netherlands…

I tracked down the surviving son(s) of my car's original owners, and, I have a photo (found behind the dashboard!)
of whom I believe to have been my car's original owners.

The son(s) didn't really care about the car's whereabouts, since they sold it, after the old-man passed away.

The IBM card for my DeSoto has a dealer number that is one digit short or "goofy" in some way. CHS told me they therefore could not decode where it was sold. Verbal history from the 3rd owner to me said the 2nd owner bought the car in Syracuse, NY in 1960 and then took it to Madison, WI. I have not been able to get any further with New York or Wisconsin recordsfolk, being told all records over 10 years old are trashed or deleted.

Any ideas ?

I sent CHS $45 for the 56 D-500 wagon IBM card, and after repeated requests, have still never received it. This is a one owner car and looks to be very unmolested. The original owner's son lives just blocks from me for additional reference. He was with is mother when they picked up the car and has a clear memory of the car. I would be happy to help in the 56 study if I can.

Brent, did/have you ever check around he interior, for its Broadcast Sheet?

You might-well find it, when you remove the interior, when you restore it.

BTW, if your car's Dealer coding is only 1-digit "off", the missing digit is probably
at either end of the sequencing.

Maybe Darrell Davis can help you, ESPECIALLY if the dealership is known to have been in a particular
(Syracuse) area.

Hate to add to this 2009 conversation (especially since d500neil passed away in 2015) *BUT* Tim D. is still kicking and I have had conversations with Tim about his car. So I feel that I can add to this thread with some confidence.

First thing that I will add is a "generic" 56 Dodge cowl data tag and its associated IBM card that I annotated for its owner. That 56 Dodge IBM card was the most work that I have put into one and the reason that I am posting it here, in Tim's thread, old as it is, is to show what the columns meant so we can have a better understanding of Tim's card.

Note that this first pair has B5 and SP2. We (frwl, RDP and 56D500boy) now think that B = routing. The first pair has B5 on the tag and column 49 = 5 as in 495 = Route 5, so that works. It also has SP2 and column 47 = 2, as in 472 which frwl thinks meant undercoating in 1956.

The second pair is Tim's car. Things to note are the Special Order Code 017 and the B4 and SP2. (I can NOT find a D500 code let alone a D500-1 code and therefore I assume that the Special Order Code 017 (from columns 63, 64 and 65) relates to the original ordering of the D500-1 option).

Based on Tim D's annotated D500-1 IBM card above , I offered the following to Tim (this is a couple of years ago):

"With reference to the IBM card, going from the left to the right:

Dealer 53818 = Apparently a Denver Area Dealer. There are two other Denver area dealers listed in Sven Andersson’s (wizard on the Forward Look) thread . 53818 is not listed.

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=54385&...

Below Dealer = 332 = 2 in the 33 Transmission column = 2 = Overdrive Manual , 1 = manual no overdrive, 3 = Powerflite

Below Dealer = 335 = Custom Conditionaire Heater. Normally the heater is part of Accessory Group 1 which I think is Heater/Defroster, Signal Lights, Inside Glare Proof (tilting rear view mirror) and outside Left mirror, which is coded as 351. However, your car did *NOT* get accessory group 1 (or 4 or 7). This might be because it would almost be assumed that a D500-1 car would be going racing and would not need the all the comforts of a street car and would typically be a heater delete car.

Below Dealer = 338 = Eight tube, six-push button , Model 842 radio

Below Dealer = 344 = 34 = Power Equipment, 4 = Power four-way seat. Other 34 codes included 341 = Power Steering, 345 = Power Brakes, 346 = Power Seat and Power Brakes, 347 = Power Seat, Power Steering and Power Brakes, 348 = Power Steering and Brakes and 349 = Power Steering and Power Seat. Your car’s IBM card punches only shows the Power Seat.

However, as you previously discussed with Neil Vedder, there is a 345 “Add Code” stamp and a 344 “Remove Code” stamp. Previously, you thought that 345 Added and 344 Deleted was a running switch to Manual steering (may have initially tried to get power steering and this is not available with the Dual Four Barrel Carburetor Group). Bottomline: Based on this photo, there is no PS pump on the back of the generator or PB vacuum can or “accordion bellow” booster. Not sure if you got the power seat in the end or not (I would guess not).

Order/Item – 62/01 – usually four numbers. Must have been an internal accounting-related code

Below Order/Item = There are often several option codes from the multi-punch column 35, like 351, 354 and 358. Your car only has the one code, 359.

Normally :

351 = Accessory Group 1 which I think is Heater/Defroster, Signal Lights, Inside Glare Proof (tilting rear view mirror) and outside Left mirror

354 = Accessory Group 4 which I think is the Convenience Group which included the Glove box light, the Parking Brake warning light, back-up lights, the map light, rain deflectors (above the front vent windows), variable speed windshield wipers and the removable vanity mirror.

357 = Accessory Group 7 – not really sure but it could be the Dodge Appearance Group = two tone deluxe plastic steering wheel, rear wheel arch stone shields, full wheel covers and extra rear seat foam padding. (or not ??)

358 = Accessory Group 8 = Possible “Safety” group that includes Power Steering and Power Brakes (??)

359 = Accessory Group 9 = still trying to track down exactly what that means. There is a thought that 9 = bumper appearance, i.e. front bumper wings and the center bar. That seemed to show on another D500 car but it does work for yours. I know you and Neil Vedder discussed this but I don’t think that there were any conclusions.

15/9937 = Region/Sequence Number = no idea at this time

Body Code 836 = 8 = V8, 3= Custom Royal , 6 =2 door Lancer Hardtop

Below 836 = 369 = “Taxi and Special Equipment” – possibly 135 Amp-hr battery (Group 27??), might be heavy duty “taxi” suspension (??) - where are those 1956 Dodge order forms when you need them?

375 = 37 = Light Equipment, 5 = Back-up lights. Normally, this is a standard item on a Custom Royal but optional on the Royal and Coronet cars. Not sure why this had to be ordered on an 836 car. Again, it would seem that the D500-1 cars were not expected to be backing up, or if so, needing lights to see or be seen while backing up.

387 = 38_= Wheel equipment (hub caps), 387 = the plainer chrome/polished full wheel disc . Again, this is an item that was a standard feature of the normal Custom Royal package. I presume that normally a D500-1 car would only get the dog dish hub caps so they had to order wheel discs. The photo above shows the 387 wheel discs.

301 = 30_ = Glass and W-L (window-lifts, electric). 301 is Solex (tinted) safety glass so nothing = clear, non-Solex glass. Other 30 series codes include 302 = Power windows, front, 303 = Solex and front (only) power windows, 304 = all four power windows and 305 = Solex and all four power windows

Paint 55 = Roof, saddle and lower all Sapphire White

Below Paint = 414 = 41_= Miscellaneous Outside Equipment, 4 = windshield washer and bumper center bar. Your car with 414 is a bit confusing because I do not see any center bar, perhaps it was removed at some point?? (I know that you previously thought 414 was variable speed windshield wipers but actually 403 is the code for those and you do not have any 40_ series codes (and there were ten codes possible from 400 to 409).

42_= Stone Shields, typically 423. Your car has no Column 42 punches and no Stone Shields. Who needs Stone Shields if you are going (drag) racing?

Trim 543 = is one of the three Custom Royal 2dr Lancer trim codes: 543 = Two Tone Patterned Jacquard Weave Fabric and Pleated Cordagrain – Green, 544 = Two Tone Patterned Jacquard Weave Fabric and Pleated Cordagrain – Blue

545 = Two Tone Patterned Jacquard Weave Fabric and Pleated Cordagrain – Silvery Black

This is 543:

Under 543 = 441 = Miscellaneous Inside Equipment = should be Electric Clock

46_ = Tubeless tires, in various sizes e.g. 465 = 7.60 x 15 White side wall tires, you have no codes which implies that your car came with the standard Royal and Custom Royal V8 7.10 x 15 4ply black side wall tubeless tires.

Axle = 314, 323 =4.3 to 1 rear differential ratio. The Powerflites always got 3.5(4) but the Manual/Overdrive cars could be ordered with either 4.1 or 4.3 to 1. Yours has/had the deeper 4.3. Drag racing any one?

Under Axle = 472 = 47 = Miscellaneous Special Equipment. I know that either you or Neil Vedder suggested that 472 was undercoating. I should probably believe that because the information that I am working from at the moment (Mike Petersen’s “1955 Dodge by the numbers” book has 472 as Deluxe Hood Ornament. All I can say is I have an IBM card for a 56 Custom Royal 4 dr sedan with 230 hp poly and it has 472 so I am quite sure that 472 isn’t a D500-1 related code.

487 = 48 = ???

494 = 49 = Shipping Route (Method). 5 is the most common. Not sure if I’ve seen “4” before. I believe that you previously thought 494 = Customer pick up. I can neither confirm or deny that one. (Sorry)

Then there are the punch codes to spell DENVER in columns 50 through 57

Columns 63, 64, 65 provide a space for the Special Order Code, in your case 017 as in 630, 641 and 657. I know that you and Neil were trying to read something into those numbers, like “7” because Gary Richard’s D500-1 had special order code 257. I have only seen one other SPL ORD code and that was for a 56 CRL D500 (not D500-1) with a special paint code (“99”). It might just be possible that the codes are just a sequential book keeping code (or not??).

603 = 60 = New Car Service, “2” often seemed to be Protective Seat Covers, you have suggested that 603 was New Car Service – Drive Away. I can neither comfirm or deny that (Sorry)

629 = 62 = Dealer Fund, 9 = ??

VIN Number = 35125652

Engine number D500-5579 had its block cast on April 25, 1956 and the casting number was 1739429-n (need to find the -number) is one of the later (not earlier, 1630029-n, series castings). There is unsubstantiated speculation that the later castings were thicker (and somehow better). I can neither confirm nor deny this (Sorry).

Build/Shipped date = 05/18, May 18th, 1956, nine days behind the original schedule

663 = 66 = Tracer Number (TN) = 3 (??) (Some internal code). I’ve seen that on several other 56 Dodges

What is curious is that there is no code for either 364 Special Motor or 367 for Big Power Package. In fact without knowing what the “017” Special Order involved, it is not possible to even flag your car as a D500-1 (really sorry)

That’s all I have for now. Hope that helps.

Good job!
Some speculations about 369 = “Taxi and Special Equipment”…
They told “Taxi *AND* Special Equipment”, I guess this is either “Taxi” *OR* “Special Equipment”
Yes, some digits decode the Taxi equipment; while some digits might be decode as D500…
BTW: 1955 Dodge code 369 was decoded as DUAL EXHAUST…
What if the secret is hidden here?
