frwl and/or RDP who are experts on these 55-56 Detroit-built Chrysler rags are in Europe, i.e. several hours ahead of us in N America so, if you give them some time (it is about midnight there now), they will likely respond before it is morning here.

In the interim, have a look at this thread started by frwl about 55-56 Detroit-built Chryslers. There are lots of answers there.

Thanks, I did look over that thread, but I could not come up with much in way of reference to this tag.

I see a few things (that frwl and/or RDP will confirm/deny) by tomorrow AM

Model 20 (or 200 presumably the wagon body, etc)

Paint 131 (??) (PAINT 133 = Rosewood Tan Lower and Cloud White Upper )

Trim 29

Sched(ule) 131 = Jan 31st 1956

A1 = Manual aerial
B5 = Power Brakes (?)
D2 = Radio Electro Touch Tuner?
F4 = heater
G1 = Solex (tinted) glass
K3 = ??
S7 = S8 = Powerflite so maybe S7 = Standard 3spd Manual Trans?
T9 = ??
V1 = ??
W7 = ??

There might also be some info here:

http://wildaboutcarsonline.com/cgi-bin/pub9990262549620.cgi?categor...

I will be corrected

Thanks. The car has power steering and power brakes. Manual windows. I did not pay much attention to the radio. It is a powerflite automatic. The car is one family owned. The woman selling it, it was her fathers. Never not garaged I am told.

I drove it a short distance. I liked it. A lot easier than my current daily driver of the last 20 years which is my 1947 Desoto Suburban.

We have an appointment to look at it again the the morning. My wife will get a chance to try it out. If she likes it, then I will make them an offer.

James.

Hello James.
Dave (56D500boy) started the deciphering correctly, and I'll add:

Trim 29 = Tan Tartan Plaid Linen and Brown Vinyl (see below)

A1 = Manual Antenna
B5 = Power Brakes
C = blank = No Power Seat
D2 = Radio Electro Touch Tuner (5 push buttons) LESS Rear Seat Speaker
E = blank = No Power Windows
F4 = Hot Water Heater and Defroster
G1 = Solex Tinted Glass – All Windows
H = blank = No Sun Cap Visor (windshield Upper Molding) or Front Side Bumper Guards (Wings)
K3 = Windshield Washer, but I’m not sure; In the 1955 Chrysler Accessory codes shows here on the tags
M = blank = No Air Conditioning
S7: I’ve never seen «7» above «S» slot earlier!!! The Transmission and Power Steering should be viewing here;

S-slot codes availability:

S1 = Transmission – 3 Speed Manual
S3 = Transmission – 2 Speed Automatic Powerflite (seen on Windsor, New Yorker, and 300B)
S4 = Transmission – 2 Speed Automatic Powerflite and Power Steering (seen on Windsor, New Yorker, and 300B)
S6 = Transmission – 3 Speed Automatic Torqueflite and Power Steering (seen on New Yorker, 300B and Imperial)
S8 = Transmission – 2 Speed Automatic Powerflite and Power Steering (seen on Windsor only)

As you can see, the S4 and S8 codes are identical; I tried to figure out what the difference between those, but no result…
Now you added the S7 code with similar parameters (you said car equipped with Powerflite and Power Steering) and this fact is very puzzled me. I have also the pictures of ’56 Windsor Town and Country Wagon with S8 slot. It has equipped with Powerflite and Power Steering as well. I have an idea that besides PF and PS the difference in S4, S8 and now S7 codes is due to the presence of rear axle ratio (there were three such on ‘56 Windsors: 3.73, 3.91 and 4.1), so perhaps the answer lies here.

Since the Rear Axle Ratio code (column 47) on the build sheet follows the Transmission code (column 46), and «S» slot on the cowl tag combines the transmission and power steering, I would guess that:

S4 = Transmission – 2 Speed Automatic Powerflite and Power Steering and 3.73 Final Drive
S7 = Transmission – 2 Speed Automatic Powerflite and Power Steering and 4.10 Final Drive
S8 = Transmission – 2 Speed Automatic Powerflite and Power Steering and 3.93 Final Drive

T9 = Inside Prismatic Mirror, but I’m not sure again. Does the car have this option?
The last «V» and «W» codes always have «1» and «7» respectively; I have seen these codes on the Windsor models only. No these codes on other model cowl tags ever, probably New Yorker, 300 B and Imperial have these as standard equipment.
V1 = Undercoating
W7 = Lights – Back Up, Luggage Compartment and Glove Box

Whether you buy this car or not, please take a picture of its front, back, cabin inside, and engine bay. You will greatly help me in further deciphering the codes of these wonderful cars.

I went back and looked the car over real good. Last night I went through all the major price guides which showed an average value of $15K. The asking price was $20K. I offered $17.5K and they rejected the offer and would not counter. $20K is too much as the interior has to be redone, the radio and clock does not work, the wood on the deck is warped in the rear due to water damage. The front end has never had any work (klng pins) nor has the rear spring rubber been replaced.

For a weekend use $20K would work for some folks to use it as is. If you start to use it daily the interior would deteriorate very soon.

So, I passed. Too bad, not a bad car just over priced.

Thanks for the help. James

I did not make it in time…
Oh, this time difference…
Photos of the car would be very, very useful in the future....

56 Chrysler 131 Paint = Rosewood Tan Lower and Sand Dune Beige Upper (so close to 133 but different).

The 29 trim would complement that well (and vice versa)
