Would anyone know what the size is for the frost plugs in a 330 hemi. I can't order them outright they want me to bring one in or tell them the size. I have a small drip behind the starter, might be a leaky bolt but would like to have them on hand just in case.
Thanks very much AL

Core plug size for a 330 DeSoto is 1 5/8" plug.

If you can't get them anywhere else, try Hot Heads (Bob Walker). He also has them in BRASS.

I called NAPA and they also wanted to see the plug. These are not the flat ones are they? The cup shaped ones are correct for the 330?
I see hot heads has ones for "Brass cup-style freeze plugs for non-stepped freeze plug holes" and ones for stepped. Which is right for the 330?
Thanks again.

The stepped hole uses the flat (slightly convex) soft plug. Your engine uses the flat (slightly convex) plug...

Tony...Going to have to disagree with you on this one!

I have a 1956 DeSoto 330 on an engine stand right now, and the cup plugs in this one are 1 5/8" diameter CUPs, not the slightly convex flat plugs. That also was same with my Adventurer 341 engine. Maybe 1957 (your Adventurer 345) and 1955 (your 291) are different, but on this 330 the cups are about 5/16" deep, so I definitely can tell they are not stepped plugs.

Since I would not think that you would have production mix machining ops to make the block, what I would do is to find another one of the plugs that you can see, and ID it.

Then get NAPA to match it up from description, with you being the final judge since you had the Mk I Eyeball on the visible one in your engine!

You are most likely 100% correct. The plugs in my '55 291 were flat, and I thought about this AFTER I put out the info. Thanks for the correction. I usually don't comment on stuff I'm not sure of, but sure as hell, when I do it's usually wrong. Thanks again DESOTOHEAD, sorry RAM...

Tony...

No problemo!

BTW...I stopped by my local CarQuest Parts Store coming back from getting a haircut today.
The correct welch plug for the 330 DeSoto I have (I bought 6, as I figure its cheap insurance to change them - get at all that potential core sand/crud) is DORMAN Part number 555-031.

One of the freeze plugs on the 331 hemi motor in my '56 Savoy was giving me issues. It had partially popped out, I think because it had become very thin from rust. Replacing the freeze plugs is going to be a royal pain in the neck once I install the headers on the car so I want it guaranteed to be solved before I put it together. I used two of these Hot Heads style plugs that screw and clamp to the block with o-ring seals. I only replaced the 2 middle ones because the rust issue was due to low lying sediment inside the block. The upper ones are very solid and I don't want to mess with them. I used some silicone sealant on the large o-ring area to help it seal better if there are any large variations in the block, but I didn't put any on the o-ring under the screw because I figured it should have a nice uniform seal there. Is this how other people install these too? Any issues that people have had with them? I don't want any surprises.
