Regular Posts: 80 Location: ca. bay area | I just started to break in my rebuilt 361 engine on my 61 and popped a freeze plug on the passenger side of the engine under the exhaust manifold. I replaced my radiator cap after the break in then it happened. my question is the cap not supposed to be 15 pound release pressure and if so where do I find the correct one. should I replace the freeze plug or just try to tap it back in? is there a sealer I use also on the plug?...Ive read the other freeze plug problem thread...thanks Edited by shkfab1 2006-11-26 6:54 PM

Expert Posts: 1506 Location: Colo Spgs | Doug Do not worry about re-installing one plug, It is a indication of what may be coming soon. Go to NAPA and get a complete set ( if the right shoe lace broke would you replace both or just the broken one ). Rodger & Gabby COS

Expert ,, George Passed away July 28th 2021, He will be Missed Posts: 1295 Location: Twin Falls, Idaho | Don't just replace them.... replace them with the stainless ones from http://www.hothemiheads.com/ The have a center that tightens up with an allen wrench and they WILL NOT come out unless you take them out. You can ruin an engine if they come out at the wrong time and place. My experience is similar to the fellow above.... if one comes out, then that one or others are likely to come out again sometime in the future and always at the most inconvenient time. After losing two at different times, I put the ones from Hot Heads in and now have over 14,000 (mostly highway, high speed) miles on the engine and no problems whatsoever. Good luck. George

Member Posts: 12 Location: Windom, MN | I also like the brass freeze plugs. also, coat the opening and the edges of the plug with permatex thread sealant/pipe dope. it will be black or dark brown color and contains NO teflon. I've had excellent luck with this sealant no matter what the freeze plug material. Later, Tony

Later, Tony Tony -did you have any problem getting the brass plugs to tighten up ( assuming they were the expansion-nut type) I tried those and following the directions- could not get the first one to tighten up so did not try the rest- returned them for credit...................................5%.......................

Member Posts: 44 | If you're buying the stainless plugs for a 331 be sure to check for fit before installing them. Sometimes Chrysler doesn't machine the hole into the block and they bottom out before the O-ring seals. Hot heads are aware of this issue but they still don't state it on their order page. When I called them to discuss this, they didn't even offer any type of refund... I'm NOT happy with them!

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9648 Location: So. Cal | What year of 331 are you talking about? I used them on my '55 331 and didn't have any trouble. One of them leaked slightly at first, but after using RTV with it, it was fine. I didn't notice any of them that were too shallow for the o-ring. If you would like to sell your set, I would consider purchasing them from you.

Member Posts: 44 | Mine is also a 55 331. There shouldnt be a need for any RTV on this plug design. You may have the same issue. I've modified the plugs they way they should have been done in the first place and re-installing them.
