Great project and nice work!!
I made wiring for these cars for years and have closed my business. If you know someone in Finland who is now making them tell him to email me. I probably have materials left over he could use.
Thanks, Greg

Actually I just yesterday pulled a box of wiring MADE BY YOU from my storage and will start to install them. Great craftmanship - I'm happy that I got my set years ago because I think this quality of work is hard to beat =)

Wow! I didn't expect a reply like that!!
Good luck with your project. Any problems let me know, I have to go by memory because all my harness boards are now gone! Too bad! Nobody wanted them!

Dismantled the dash today. The old foam is truly a messy stuff!

Any advice on putting it back together again? What would be the smartest procedure to install it back with gauges, wiring etc.. 1) getting all ready and installing in one piece or 2) installing dash first and then do wiring and gauges while it's in place?

I guess the black parts should be semi-gloss?

I would completely restore and assemble the entire dash including the dash pad. Including all switches and wiring. I used to take the time to check all electrical function and circuits before I installed it in the car.
Install the wind lacing before rotating the dash up in to place. Protect it with clear tough plastic sheet. I like clear so you can see where it is binding. I always did it myself but it would be easier with two people!

I left the glovebox and radio out until later on the Chrysler.

Pics of a dodge and 300C.

Thanks for the advice, Greg.

After years of fixing Fords I must admit that every detail, materials and engineering on Chrysler seems to prove why it was an upper class automobile and Fords were at low price range. Few years back I restored our Galaxie's gauges and when comparing those materials and engineering to this... whoa, what a difference in quality.

I'm not sure whether to repaint the bronze clusters or just polish these up. They have some scratches and a few bits of patina here and there...

Those chrome rings are glued into the pods and it's that glue which makes this gooey grey stuff ooze to the plexiglas.

Thanks to a experienced Forward Look friend I knew how to deal with the stuff: It dissolves to a basic household dishwash liquid. No need to scratch the plexiglas. I gave these parts a 24 hour bath in a dishwash liquid rich water and almost all of glue had gone and the leftovers where easy to remove gently with a dishbrush.

I also got the chrome ring from clock pod out just by dissolving the glue but the chrome rings on the two bigger pods are harder to take away. I haven't managed yet...

Looks good. Is that a 4bbl intake on there now? An upgrade to a 4bbl would be a very wise choice. The 2bbl carbs aren't very reliable from my experience, and they hold back the performance of the motor. You could have paid extra for that option on a Windsor so it wouldn't be completely out of place.

Yes, 4bbl upgrade would be a wise move but at this time we're going with the original 2bbl setup just to get the car back on the road. I found a nice rebuilt 2bbl carb and didn't have 4bbl intake around. Keeping the 4bbl upgrade option still in mind.

Windsor's door panels were gold, green/grey and black when I got the car and after browsing the web I found many Windsors with similar colored door panels. The middle section seemed to be a bit different on each.

This was puzzling because the other interior color options I saw were more "color-keyed" to dash and seats than these and yet the sales literature told they are all color-keyed to perfection.

It took a while until I saw few old color pictures of a Windsor with similar interior and I saw the middle section was actually brown to match the seat cloth and gauge pods and the top section matched the dash metal parts. Later I found pics of one restored coupe with gold-brown-black door panels. And after I removed the door handles and moldings there was actually different shade of gold in top and brown in the middle section.

From these observations I figured out that the vinyl colors Chrysler used for this particular interior were aged to a different shades. The gold which was supposed to match the dash tend to change more reddish and the brown had changed to grey or greyish green over the years.

So now when I refurbished the door panels I did match the gold stripe to dash and "color-keyed" the middle section to seat cloth and dash pods. From what I learned form the original parts it seems that the top section was metallic gold but the brown in the middle was without metallic.

Here's few before - during - after shots of the door panel refurbishment.

This weeks agenda is dashboard. Re-painted all dash parts to match the original colors, polished the knobs and repainted the centers, cleaned and checked the switches, polished the plexiglas and now waiting for assembly.

Very nice color match on the silvery pink dash color. How did you do the gold on the knobs? You are right that the center section on the door panels was originally a copper color, but I think I like them better
in the faded gray. The gray is a nice in-between color for the black and pink.

The dash color should be as close to original as possible. Had few un-faded samples of the dash and we used several measures to get the right formula.

The gold on the knobs is is a gilt lacquer which contains gold-bronze powder. Should be more durable than normal paint but not 1:1 same shade than original.

The "copper-brown" stripe on the doors should also be pretty close match with samples underneath the door handles and it seems to be "color-keyed" wiith both gauge pods and the cloth on the seats just like dash color is color-keyed to top of the door panels and vinyl on the seats.

Looks pretty much the same product, I used "Liberon Liquid Gilt Varnish" brand. After painting the knobs with a small brush I smoothed them gently with a P5000 wet sanding paper.

Next up: Manufacturing new package tray and kick panels and steering wheel restoration.

The car has both options: rear speaker and a rear window defroster. As far as I have studied brochures and pictures, it seems that if only one of these options were ordered, the package tray had only one hole in the middle. But if both options were ticked, then the speaker went to driver's side of the package tray and the defroster air inlet went to passenger side. Correct me if I'm wrong but at least this is how they were installed on mine.

Steering wheel is made from two different materials. Black bottom is more rubber-like and top part is a plastic of some sort. Bottom material has aged well and has no cracks but the plastic top is all cracked. I'm going to drill out the cracks and use epoxy paste to fix them.

What color should the top part of the steering wheel be? Mine is something between beige and grey and ivory but I've seen many steering wheels where the top color matches the lower dash color. Would it be all wrong to use the dash color on the top of the steering wheel?

The original color was a semi-translucent off-white. Look up pictures of '57 300C steering wheels to see some examples. This was the deluxe steering wheel. The colored versions came out later, and they didn't match the interior colors very well. Also, on my New Yorker, the rear speaker is still in the center even with the rear defroster installed.

Am I correct that the belts should go as in this picture? Trying to mock-up the assembly to find all the correct brackets and bolts.

I don't have the original power steering pump which probably has double-pulley on it? I'm going to replace it with a 1962 single-pulley pump but will this work on the long run? Should there be two belts running the water pump and power steering pump?

The way you have drawn it is correct. The danger of going to 1 belt on the power steering is that one belt is the only one coming from the crankshaft, and is effectively driving everything. So it will be more prone to wear. But it should work as long as you keep an eye on it. We drive these cars so little in comparison to how much they were designed to be used that you should be fine with it.

Got my alternator brackets ready today ...

I remember seeing a simple drawing how to connect the alternator using the original wiring, having amp meter still working and using the regulator just as a junction to keep the original looks ...just can't find that thread anymore. I know it should be simple but I'm no electrician so a guide for dummies would be handy :D

Thanks! It wasn't an easy job but the outcome looks good. The chrome ring has little pitting in it but I guess it's ok to have some marks of history left in the dash :)

I have *NO* idea what "durable chrome foil" is and why you used it instead of having the parking light housing rechromed. Inquiring minds want to know

Thanks. I used weatherproof chrome foil, the same kind they use to "wrap" cars these days. When you heat it, it molds well to the desired shape and has mirror-like finish. Rechroming the housings would have been a good option too but this one was a lot cheaper option to try out first.

You’ve done some fantastic work! Glad to see a 4dr Forward Look getting this level of attention. That steering wheel looks incredible,how long did it take you to repair it?

Thanks!

The steering wheel project took several months as I gave the putty time to settle before sanding and adding more where needed ..it also took several layers of primer and paint with lots of sanding to get acceptable result. I think it might have been better but this was the very first steering wheel restoration I've ever done. I think it wasn't my last one though.

Yesterday I got the front lights done... I got rid of the H4 setup made by previous owner in 1990 and installed original style sealed beams after cleaning the housings and applying new red paint to the covers... the headlight moldings were rechromed.

A bit slow progress during 2020 and 2021 but finally the seats have been re-upsholstered to the original specs. Amazing work by Rockarolina, fabrics came from SMS.

Yes I got this tip from the veterans: Never order ready-made stuff from SMS, just get the fabrics and everything is smoother with local specialists.

The Finnish Rockarolina did awesome work with my seats. She is very talented and a true professional. Also a MoPar person herself as far as I know.

Now I have to keep busy with the project because I really want to get those seats installed as soon as possbile ..still the headliner to be done...

Looks like code M5 - 1 on the cowl tag means UNDERCOATING AND UNDER HOOD PAD (order code 401)

The windshield upper molding was standard on New Yorker and optional on Windsor and Saratoga;
But the built card does not contain it option;
The car does have roof rail drip molding; I guess this option should be showed in the «DRIP RAIL» column in the build card (the first column 37x, probably 371);
The antenna code 343 means dual rear antennas, isn’t it?

341 – Manual Antenna
343 – Dual Manual Antennas
344 – Power Antenna

The car had undercoating and under hood pad.
But it has a manual antenna on front fender, no dual antennas.

I guess drip rail molding and windshield upper molding might have come within an option package?

This car is assembled in the very end of the production run in August 1957 so it could be possible that they have installed some extra moldings too?

Your car has two accessory groups:
No. 1 – Basic (not shown on the picture below and no info about it, but I guess it is contains: Light Package, Full Flow Oil Filter, Custom Steering Wheel, and Chrome Stainless Wheel Covers);
No. 3 – Comfort (see on the picture below);
The windshield upper molding was a separate option (see on the picture below as well).
Yes, your car has front fender mounted antenna now, but originally it was built with dual rear antennas, I believe.
It would be nice to check this by looking under the rear quarter panels and looking up with a light…

Yes the car has all the stuff from Basic accessory group and the Comfort group. It also has all options of the Safety group. Other options include white wall tires, power steering, power brakes, Solex glass all around and electric clock.

It has always had only the front fender antenna, no signs of dual antennas. I have been in touch with the original owner's family members and got also old pictures of the car. I am 4th owner since 1957.
