1956 DeSotos have a strong family tie, so my "off the top of my head" answer would be a '56 Fireflite 4dr Hardtop, iridescent plum/iridescent lavander. As I "mature", the 4 dr. becomes more attractive so that we can actually enjoy the car, hosting friends and being comfortable, rather than having to ask people to climb past the folded seat of a 2 door.

I really like the front grille treatment of the '55/56 Imperial/300, so if you had asked "pick 2"........

And then there's........

That is hard, I guess I would pick what I have, 59 Dodge Coronet 2 door hardtop. I pick the Coronet over the custom royal, because I don't like the thick trim, I pick the little v8 326 over larger engines because I like to drive and I don't like gas prices, I pick the color mine is, blue, with white lower, roof and fin. daul antennas I like my interior too, black and white with silver metalic thread in the black cloth inserts, and mylar inserts in the door panels. I pick the hardtop over the covertible because while I like the idea of an open car, the hardtop is more attractive in my opinion over the lumpy convertible top, when it is up. The only other choice that rivals this for me would be a 57 Chrysler ny or windsor, in light green body with dark green accents, and matching interior, but I do like the smaller v8 engines, because of economy, over the bigger ones.

This is easy. The 58 DeSoto Adventurer. The pinnacle of DeSoto styling, the most striking fins ever made. Serve mine up with a dual quad hemi, all the power goodies, a/c, hiway hifi, and paint it black and gold. Give me a friendly traveling companion and a car show to go to (preferably a couple days away) and I don't care what gas costs or what's happening at work cuz I'm in Forward Look heaven.

James (5859), you may have right in many points, but the top is not as bad. For use more frequently I would also prefer a metallic roof. - SERGE -

Joe,

1957 was the last year you could get a Hemi in a DeSoto. 341 in the Dome and Flite, 345 in the Adv. If it is a 58 you want, the 361 is your only choice. But I'm sure you could make the "adjustment" one way or the other.

1960 plymouth fury 2 door hardtop with a 383 GC
i always loved finned cars but when i saw a 60 fury it was LOVE at first sight i was 6 or 7 years old and never forget that car. i started looking for one at the age of 16 and found my dream car 2 years later. my 1rst car!
although the 60 plymouths have no perfect design (the side lines on 57-59 furys are cleaner) its my all time favorite car. i just love its angry looking face, sweeping fins, low wheel cut outs and that cool coupe roof, also love the solid engineering with the bulletproof 383/torqueflites/8.3/4 axle and solid rattlefree unitbody construction. if i had a million dollars i wouldn't drive another car and i will never sell it!

My username says my favorite but if one was not available I would choose a Starlight Black 1959 four-door Desoto Fireflite Sportsman swivel seats of course I have hard time getting info for any other parts that I would like since I have only been searching about Plymouths.

Since money is no object I would own THREE.

In Order Of Preference:

1. '59 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer convertible - All Black or All Red, with white top and white interior
and ALL the Bells and whistles ( swival seats, power everything, etc. ) and of course the
Super D500 option.

2. '58 Dodge Regal Lancer ( any way I could get it ) Copper and Black. They did come with a
couple of paint options.

3. "61 Chrysler 2 Dr. HT ( Windser or New Yorker ) with all the options I could get. "BLACK" !!

( I MEAN, IF WE ARE WISHING, WHAT THE HELL, I'M GOING FOR IT ALL !! )

Brent, you make this too easy!! If money were no object, I'd have one of each--let's see about 50 FL cars and a few brand X as well. But sticking to the thread, I'd go for a 1960 Polara 2-door hardtop, D500 (with crossrams), all options, probably in red.

56 Adventurer. Black and gold. Fastest thing on the road in 1956. It just LOOKS like it has been abusing steroids... and if I can't have that, give me.... oh, I don't care... a 61 300G convertible.... after that any 55 thru 59 2 dr Fireflite, hardtop or convertible.

Key point : pick ONE car !

The reason I asked it that way was to see how the 59 Dodge popularity (see "Favorite Dodge" thread) stacked up against the other two I see as carrying the show .... the 58 Plymouth and the 300C or maybe even the F. So far, they aren't getting the votes. Hmmm ....

The reason I proposed "money was no object" is that I suspect many of us pull back from the 300's for monetary reasons and focus more on the rest of the field, but if it wasn't a price issue, would you still stick with a non-300 car ?

Keep it coming !

Dan,

While attending the Harold LeMay shindig near Tacoma about 1990, a man approached me and asked about DeSotos. We got to talking and he said he had just been looking at a DeSoto Adventurer on a car lot in Aberdeen. Most times you here the "A" word dropped, it tends to be some boob trying to get attention, .... but this guy was was green as green, .... clueless that an Adventurer was anything more special than a Firesweep. Because of this, I took him seriously. I asked if he was going to buy the car. He said "no", so I asked if he might give me the lead on it, which he did. I called Simpson Motors and talked with the owner, Leonard Simpson. He had just sold the car to a friend of his who wanted the engine for a 40 Ford streetrod project. He confirmed it was indeed a 56 Adventurer, and I proceeded to call his friend and ask about his plans.

This guy was kinda clueless, and just wanted a go-fast Hemi for his rod. I asked him if he really wanted a DeSoto Hemi, or if a 392 might appeal to him more? I swapped him a machined and ready-to-build 392 for the whole Adventurer. And just as I was about to hang up the phone, I asked if it was still white and gold (assuming it would be like 99% of them were). He said "No, ... the car is black and gold".

So we made a trip down to the coast to deliver the 392 and pick up the car. Like always, it was pouring rain down there, ... just a miserable day. There was snow on the ground and it kept shifting from hard rain to sleet all day long. We were soaked and cold within minutes. He took us up out of Hoquiam about 5-10 miles to where the car was supposed to be "stored". It was in the back of a freshly bulldozed plot of mud that had subsequently been stuffed with cars from that used car lot mentioned earlier. Leonard was there and was going to retrieve the car by hooking a chain onto it and dragging it out with his bulldozer, as we could not get the 4x4 and trailer within 100 feet without sinking. Trouble was, Leonard didn't give a crap about the body, and had cars parked within 2-3 inches of the DeSoto. He just wanted to give it a yank and if they banged together, so be it !

Not wanting a battered wreck, I applied some beer wrench to Leonard's thinking and he slowed down a bit, pulling the cars next to the DeSoto away from it before hooking a chain to the Adventurer and dragging up onto firm ground. This took the better part of 6 hours. When I looked the car over out in the muck (it was sitting on its frame and floorpans because the mud was so soft), it looked surprisingly good for a coast car. It came out of the muck with a ton and a half of his property stuck to the undersides, so we got it on the trailer and took it to a truck stop / wash to "lighten the load". Oh Gawd! .... what a mess! The floors were solid as an aquarium, holding about 4 inches of water, but the fenders were flapping in the breeze, and it had that weird coastal "high" rust, up on the roof and window edges and in the deepest parts of the car strructure.

Well, I got it home and pulled the floor plugs to drain the lake inside and rolled it into the shop and just let it sit and dry out for a month. It cranked easily, but wouldn't start. Larry Zappone told me to take the distributor to a shop he recommended to tune it. Back in the car, it ran like a monster ! I put brakes back into it, and we were off to the races.

I drove that car for about two years before selling it to Leslie Howard. In that time (since it needed a totally new body) I drove that car harder than any other FL car I have ever owned. I'm not much for beating a car with off-line starts, but 100 mph four-wheel-drifts out by Ste. Michele Winery were a lot of fun. 56 Desotos can be stunning cars, and a black and gold Adventurer about tops the cake for DeSoto that year. Mine was a brute.

i personally would rather have a 57 new yorker convertible, than a 300 conv any day,i also prefer the style of the 57 desoto conv and i love the lines and the grille on my 57 plymouth conv...thats why i kept it and sold my fury some years back [dumb move should have kept the furys too. when it comes to value i know the 300s are the most popular , but the side trim and grille on the 57 new yorker is nicer...in my opinion...

There is a reason I own a 1956 DeSoto Adventurer (even if mine is White/Gold, like about 123% of them...... )
I think you just summed it up, even if it is without the menacing look of the Black/Gold ones....

It must be a '57 DeSoto Fireflite Sportsman 2-dr Ht, mandarin rust and white sweep/roof, matching interior and almost all options plus 28-year old Gina Lollobrigida sitting next to me in it.. The reason for that car is because when I was teenager in the late 70s, I saw fins and rocket taillights of local '57 DeSoto Fireflite, I stopped dead and then went crazy about it and rode my bicycle all over the town for just hoping to see it somewhere..

A black '57 Adventurer coupe with gold spear/roof and wire wheels.

That is the pinnacle in extroverted yet thoroughly classy American styling.

After that would be a '57 Fury, a black/tan 300G convert, and a red '56 300B. All for the same reasons.

It's definately a 1958 Plymouth two door hardtop. I like the looks of it, there is not much more to say. Love at first sight. I own a 1958 Belvedere, so my seccond choise would be a 1961 Plymouth two door hardtop. I like Plymouths because of the simplicity. Not to many 'jewelery' on the body (that counts for most of the forward look cars compared to other brands). Plymouths are cheap in some sort of way which makes the design more visible. I hope/think you all know what I mean.

I already have two of my favorites - a blue/white '60 Fury with the ram-inducted engine (because I flogged the heck out of one back from 1960 to 1964) and a white '57 300C (because it was the flagship of the Chrysler line, the whole of which was given "Motor Trend's" award as "Car of the Year" which was very impressive to a teenager then). But as that same kid, I remember pumping gas into a black and gold '57 Adventurer, which made quite an impression on me. And if I were to get my hands on a red '60 300F drop top. . . .

1958 Fireflite convertible. I only wish Exner had put the 57 sidesweep on the 58 (my only complaint). The wedge for ease of parts availablity and cost. I prefer the fishmouth grille with the break in the middle to lessen its "catfish" look. The best post-war car ever made, in my opinion. About the pinnacle of styling and engineering. I am humbled, knowing I am one lucky SOB to actually own one. Finding a comparable 300 would be vastly easier.

It would have to be 60 nyer convertible in poly blue metallic with  413 crossram engine, swivel seats, autopilot, cruise control, power windows etc.as well as flightsweep deck lid. Looks good any angle and is lacking in gawdy sidetrim found on other fwdlks! Also unibody construction gives it a lower profile as well as more rigidity!

My dream car was always the '58 Plymouth Fury, but since I've aquired my '57 Belvedere my "dream" has somewhat changed and I would never part with my '57. But if I had the money I would still buy a '58 Fury.

If I ever get to "money is no object", I'll have one, be it Black/Gold or white/Gold... In the meantime, I'll gladly settle for my Fireflite, and soon a 26 Chrysler and a 46 DeSoto (to be hot rodded)... of course, I'd take yours too...

i agree with 'suddenly ive owned 56-57+58 furys and the only thing i wish they offered were colors, in the 1950s automobile colors were at their peak and you could only get eggshell white and buckskin , at least red and black! but thats history. and i ve seen a 57 fury painted red and it looked great, happy motoring!!! If I had my 'druthers, it would be either a red 300B with the 355 HP option and air. or a '56 Imperial 4 door hardtop with all options, red with white top. Failing to have those choices, I'd settle for a '56 Fury with the rare dual quad option.

Well.... I am going for a 59 Dodge Covertible , Absolutely Fully Loaded including the D500 option... I love the Frown Look front End , The Flowing Chrome tipped Fins outback, Wire Wheels, Red / Black Paint or the same colour option as my 59..Although i do prefer the 57/58 dash,So can i have that as a option,,

A 57/8/9 Desoto Convertible was a close second Choice....

I would have to pick the 1960 New Yorker convertible.Even though I sold my 60 Saratoga,I still think this car is the
car that screams Exner! It would have to be loaded with accessories because I love accessories.

Brent,
I was told you lost that 1956 adventurer in an accident while leaving the Monroe Swap Meet. Leslie Howard left town in a pink Desoto from John Fay's collection.

Yeah, driving west, straight into the setting sun, I tagged some lady who had stopped dead in the through lane because she was lost and wanted to turn left, but the left turn lane was full of cars. I wasn't going very fast because of the blinding sun hanging on the hood, but I never even saw her until it was too late. It punched her spare into the tailgate and the Adventurer being rusty, pulled the lower fenders loose so they flapped in the breeze, but the car drove home just fine. I visited Leslie this summer in Puyallup. He had a garage full of 56 DeSotos and a couple 56 Dodges out front. He got the black Adventurer, as well as the 56 Fireflite coupe with A/C from me when I cut my cars back to just the 58 DeSoto. It had always been my plan to use the Fireflite as a body donor for the Adventurer, but Leslie's penchant for interiors and color moved him to restore the Fireflite. I believe he said it was being kept in Carson City. The plan then shifted to restore one of his white Adventurers using all the build tags / info from the rusty black one. They had their house up for sale and the cars were kinda sidelined the last time we talked.

1960 Chrysler 300-F convertible.

Of course, I might take a New yorker convertible if it was that cool purple color inside and out, I think it is called "Iris".

Others that come in close would be the 60 Matador/Polara. And of course, a 58 Belvedere 2 door hardtop which I think is the most handsome car ever built.

For me it is the 1960 Chrysler 300F 2 door hardtop. If I was able to own my dream car, it would be painted tuxedo black, and would perhaps have the ultra rare Pont-a-Mousson 4-speed transmission package. Years ago, there used to be such a car (with auto trans) in my area that put to shame many unsuspecting Chevs/Fords. This mysterious car was all black, and is remembered by many around here as one super fast car. As legend has it, the owner was driving by a local drinking hole one day, and noticed all the patrons outside drinking in the hot summer sun... The car trailed off out of sight, only to return 30 seconds later to stop out front. The driver proceeded to do a brake stand, then if that wasn't enough completed two complete rubber burning figure 8's encompassing the entire area in a fog of burned rubber smoke. What happened to the car is a complete mystery. However, my father remembered the car parked by the side of the highway out of town with the front end jacked up off the ground. What was wrong with it was anyone's best guess. But, my father regrets to this day not enquiring about an asking price. My research into this mysterious car led me to an 80 yr old gentleman who claimed he owned this legendary 300f at the time of these fabled stories. He claims that he drove it until 1968 and that was about the time that he blew the transmission. It was then that he traded it straight up for a 196?'s Willy's Jeep, and never seen this legendary 300 again. Sadly, there are no known pics of this car. So for the time being, it exists only in a fortunate few's memory.

If I could only pick one vehicle, I would probably be a traitor and go with a '67-'68 Barracuda fastback. Something about having a strong small block/4-speed in a small car that is exhilarating and fun. And I've always loved the design too with the ability to sleep in the back of it. But give me a second option and I would pick the '57 New Yorker coupe, with a dual quad hemi motor, just like the car I own. 3rd is the '60 New Yorker with cross ram. But my wife's favorite car is our '58 DeSoto, so that one would be in there too. I have been thinking about this lately as I need to thin the corral down a bit.

Easy - unlike most of the folks here, the '57 Dodge is the only FL I have a lot of interest in. In late 1966, as a high school senior, I found a '57 Dodge convertible intact in a local boneyard. The yard owner was willing to trade it for my $300 Matchless 500 motorcycle. It was a dual-quad 354 hemi, tired but undamaged, with only the air filters missing, rotten seat cloth, and a flat cam. It had p/s, p/b, p/w, and was an automatic. I still believe it was a D501 but can't prove it as I have no photos or records, and am aware that Neil and others maintain D501's were not equipped with a/t. I had no idea what it was and didn't care but boy was it fast. Upon graduation the next spring it got traded in for $100 toward a used VW to take to college, which I subsequently totaled before then.

I've been fortunate over the last 54 years to have some pretty fun cars, from a hot rod Model A roadster when I was 15 (kept 23 years) to lots of other street rods, Corvettes, restored cars, and 7 DeLoreans, as well as a few motorcycles. In recent years I have endeavored to recreate some of the earlier ones, only improved - an award winning '32 Ford roadster hot rod, supercharged Chevy-powered DeLorean, etc. But the one I really missed was that Dodge convert.

I spent 40+ years trying to find another one, in part to atone for my youthful FL ignorance. Finally in 2014 a Wanted ad placed on this forum led to a very solid convert that had been in storage since 1977. I am forever grateful to the long-time forum member who saw fit to pass it on to me. Also, as most know I now have a '57 Suburban 2-door wagon to accompany the convert. As I near 70 I hope it is finished before I am.

5859 - 2007-02-11 3:00 PM I pick the little v8 326 over larger engines because I like to drive and I don't like gas prices

Isn't California such a frustrating state? Beautiful landscapes, great weather, well preserved project cars, and iconic cities but the moment you become a citizen you basically sell your soul to the state in taxes, $4 gas, and expensive housing.

Also, if I had to choose, I'd go with a custom built 57 Desoto Adventurer 2 door hardtop 6 passenger wagon. Gold sweep and roof on white. The roof would be very similar to the roof used on the 60/61 Chrysler wagons, including the stamped lines on the B-pillar as well as a roof rack altered a bit to be a bit sleeker to make it unique to the car rather than just a clone of the 60/61 roof rack. I'd have it finished to look like it was something that came from the factory, and it would also have the full size Desoto fins, not the truncated fins that the 57-59 wagons ended up getting. The chrome trunk trim that the 57 Adventurers had would look great adapted to fit on the wagon hatch, kinda like a Chevy Nomad. The cargo area would wood like some of the 56 Chrysler's had, but instead of the walls and rears of the seat being wood, only the floor would be would, with the rest being trimmed and upholstered to match the rest of the Adventurer interior. Hemi of course (392 trimmed to look Desoto), probably with a modern fuel injection system cosmetically alterted to look similar to the ones they actually put into the 58 Desoto's with Desoto badging and paint. Would also have a more modern drivetrain with overdrive, bias ply look radials with 2-3 inch white wall, and disk brakes, again all styled to look like something that would have come from the factory. I'd leave the interior mostly stock looking but with upgraded wiring and an old Desoto radio modernized for FM, AUX, USB, etc.

1960 DeSoto Fireflite 2 door HT...............don't have it but trying to find the "right one".

The reasons for my passion of the '60 Fireflite 2 door HT are I like the styling, clean, flowing, a bit sculptured and it's less gaudy than the '60 Adventurer. Also the grille is reminiscent of the original '53 Adventurer which I really like. Yeah I could be like a lot of others and pick the '58 Fury, or the Adventurers of the 50's and 300s, or the '59 Dodges all of which I do like. But being a DeSoto guy, I'll stick with the '60 Fireflite 2 door HT in black please.................

Nothing fancy. Maybe a 60 Chrysler Windsor like the one that got away from me last month. Turned out that someone else wanted it more.
