I've seen a pic, of a 57 Dodge 325 Poly head engine, with dual Carter carbs/intake installed on it. Usually, a person will install Hemi heads on a Poly motor (the engine's stamping-number will give-it-way) , but, I've never previously seen "dual Carters", installed on a DODGE Poly. So, my question is simply this: will/would a 318 PLYMOUTH dual-carb intake bolt- up, to 325 Dodge Poly/Hemi cylinder heads? Probably not, huh? I do know that the exhaust ports are different, between the Dodge Poly & Hemi heads, but that's not my question/issue. I just wonder why dual Carters have not been 'routinely' installed on the Poly heads? Of course, the dual Carters, installed on the stock Hemi, was no big-deal, because the one-and only 57 DODGE camshaft was too mild, to take full advantage of all the extra CFM that was dumped into the motor by the extra 4 barrels. I'm kinda answering my own question, here.....

Neil.... A Poly "A" engine intake will NOT bolt up to a Dodge poly (or hemi) head. Physically they are different engines. BUT, you can bolt the dual 4 Offenhauser (or even the super rare D500-1 Kiekhaufer aluminum intake) to the poly Dodge heads. SO...you can have a 2x4bbl for a poly Dodge by doing this. Regarding the cams, the high-deck Dodges all share the same cam blanks, so a hemi grind will fit into the poly engine just fine, as long as lift is not unreal! And for carbs, you could use the dual 4s off a 318 poly on the Offenhauser manifolds....

It was an gas hog that ran very good over 35 mph. Rodger & Gabby COS

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Yep, Yep, & YUP: I knew abot the aftermarket 'Edel-boy' manifold; so, the car I saw on someone's webpage musta had THAT manifold on it; just kinda thought that it was unusual to install dualies on a Poly-head motor (without finding/installing Hemi heads, too)! Ply V800 intakes are more-available, so, I wondered if the guy might have had one of them, lying around, & mighta adapted it, to the Poly block (along with finding some-sort of "second" Carter carb, to install). The/an amazing thing, about 57 D500 engines is that both single & dual carb versions had the same camshaft. I had my car's cam be re-ground, so that its idle is now sorta lumpy---guess, in 57, the factory was "going" for as smooth-and-as-quiet of an operation, as possible----they/it probably figgured that a "performance-minded" owner knew-enuf to grind the cam, and to install low restriction mufflers, etcetcetc.... Expert Posts: 1506 Location: Colo Spgs | Hola Gents In 1957 all the intake manifold makers, made an mainifold for the complete V8 MoPar line, be it twin four, three two's or just an 4 bbl. The De Soto that was sooo quiet and sooo smooth out ran all the other C300's, D-500's or Plymouth's. Uncle Rodger & Aunt Gabby COS

Board Moderator Posts: 3186 Location: The not-so-great, dirty-white North ( Michigan) | Neil... Actually, they both look like an aluminum OFFENHAUSER dual 4bbl intake for Dodge high-decks that I have. Top one is definitely NOT a Kiekaufer D500-1 unit, as that manifold has the mounting bosses for a driver's side generator mounting bracket. Bottom photo is hard to tell, but it is definitely a DODGE poly, NOT a Plymouth (look at the water outlets on the fronts of the heads, and the RED filler tube going into the front of the block). The manifold runner contours look like the Offy intake again, but that is my only visual clue there.....that and the fact that both have exhaust crossovers.....

Ya think that their both ALLOY-intakes, huh??? "Super Red Ram" decals, on the red 'covers', would look neat!

Board Moderator Posts: 3186 Location: The not-so-great, dirty-white North ( Michigan) | The Plymouth Polymotors (Also called Wide-Blocks or Canadian polys) have a ribbed valve cover as well. BUT, the ribbing is not so nearly pronounced as on the Dodge polys or the Chrysler Spitfire polys. I think both of these manifolds are aluminum. As to whether Offy or Edelbrock...????? But I have never seen a dodge 2 x 4bbl intake (Kiekhaufer or aftermarket) that was not aluminum on the Dodges. The tales goes that Chrysler perfected the art of casting screen doors trying to make the Dodge 2x4bbl intakes in iron. They turned to Mercury Marine for help, and since Kiekhaufer was already running Mopars in NASCAR, he agreed to make a run of intakes (100 to 150 or so is the estimate). But Mercury Marine had NO expertise in iron, so aluminum was agreed for the intakes for both the expedience due to timing constraints on the supply as well as the weight savings. The resulting D500-1 intakes had NO exhaust crossover, as this was a complication to make as well as just not needed for racing. The Offenhauser intake was created when Chrysler asked them for a manifold for the 1957s (like they did for the 54 Dodge Indy Pace Car engines), and was envisioned to be a part you could purchase through dealers if you wished. But then came the AMA ban on racing, and everything fell apart. Offenhauser marketed those intakes on their own after that...... I have never seen an Edelbrock Dodge 2 x 4bbl intake, so if anyone has one and wants to send me pictures, PLEASE DO!

Exner Expert 19,174 posts. Neil passed away 18 Sep 2015. You will be missed, Neil! Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | The Dodge valve (actually: "rocker", huh?) covers have pronounced scalloping, along their lower end, and the PLY's have the peaked-reinforcement-detail, in their upper-center areas. Help me, here, though: I had thought that the PLY's had closure-issues, on the covers, because there were only two hold-down studs/bolts, on them. On these two engines, the DOD has two stud/bolts, but Donnie's has THREE of them? I don't recall reading about closure-issues, with the DOD covers; only on the PLY covers....?

Account Suspended Posts: 2827 Location: At "The Rock" in upper East Tennessee | The Plymouth Poly's had three bolts in the valve coves up till around 62 give or take. Thats about all I know for exact differences on this. Anybody else want to chime in here?

Regular Posts: 68 Location: Southern Pennsylvania | Actually Plymouth only used the 3-bolt covers 56-58, in '59 they went to only 2 bolts. However the casting for the cylinder heads never changed so 3-bolt covers can be used on any A engine. I've never heard of or seen any "closure" issue with the 2 bolt valve covers... as I understand it, Chrysler stopped using the 3-bolt design because the center bolt really wasn't necessary.

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | The "story" that I had heard was that the two (probably) closure bolts could warp the fit, of the valve covers, and create oil leaks. I have no personal experience regarding this myth(?), though.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7805 Location: Williams California | If the valve cover bolts were tightened to spec, they would not leak, as long as the gaskets were in the proper position. Many times, a backyard mechanic would 'reef' the bolts down when a leak developed, which would misshapen the valve cover, causing future leakage problems. ---John
