I'm considering changing my insurance company. I just got my renewal notice and it states the car is worth less than $2200 though last year it was insured for much more than that. The problem I am having is that I store my car in a canvas zipper garage, and every classic car insurance company I have investigated requires the car be kept in a locked garage.

I'm looking for advice on who to use or not use, and advice from others without a locked garage on how you handle this requirement.

Interesting topic... and timely too.

A friend who is into fords uses Hagerty... and came highly recomended. Not wanting to take one persons word on it I was going to post a similar topic asking for other group members experience with Hagerty.

http://www.hagerty.com

They toout themselves a catering to the automotive collector, and seem to have a sence of value for these older cars.

They have this instant quote matrix on their website. I plugged in the numbers for my 59 and found the annual rates to insure my car extremely reasonable.

I just use state farm for it. It is a declared value policy. Costs me a whopping 7 dollars a month I think....

Hagarty will have my money soon. Aon is making my wife's car ineligible, so I will be taking my 57 and her Camaro to Hagarty.

I have had J.C. Grundy for 30 plus years. About 16 years ago, a tornado dropped the garage on top of one of my collector cars and my wife's modern. Grundy sent an adjuster who actually recognised what the car was, plus others in the barn. He asked how I based my value, and I told him from Old Cars Weekly Value Guide. He wrote me a check for the full amount on the spot, and let me keep the car. We battled State Farm for 6 months on the value of my wife's car, because they only wanted to pay what I would get on trade, rather than making me whole--in otherwords--finding me another car, as Illinois law requires. They maintained that they were offering me what I would get if I sold it, which was sort of true, except that the car was not for sale. They also kept changing which source they were using for values, which is not cricket, either. If you start out with NADA, continue with NADA, don't switch to Kelley when their price is lower than NADA. I'm in the insurance business, I know about these things. State Farm did fine on the damage to the house--different adjuster--different policy.
You may ask why I am not insured by my employer--do you want to argue with friends of yours? Do you want to put them in the position of conflict of interest?

I have Grundy for my Desotos. Communication has always been good with them, as I've called them by phone, made changes, moved my cars from one place to another, changed coverage, etc. No problems, BUT I have never had a claim to them, so can't really say for sure.

Park your car in your buddies garage and snap a picture . They want to see your car in the garage , so they ll keep the pic on file .

You have to watch yourself with antique ins , I have a 53 caddy i purchased about 17 yrs ago at that time i insured it for 7500. I never increased it as years went by as the value went up,i figured i could fix any damage for that amount. My best friends son was getting married and wanted to ride in it to the wedding,so his father took my car to detail it ,and a honda decided to kill it self on my left front fender, Well its the cost of chrome and body work at todays restoration shop prices the cars repairs(according to their adjuster)was over 12 thousand dollars.so they wanted to pay me in full and take the car.No WAY !! the car has 35000 original miles and was mint condition,I talked to the people at J.C.Taylor And they paid me 5500. and i kept the car. I was able to replace the fender and all the front grill ,paint nose and put it right for about that price . Now i tell everyone to be well insured!its very important!!! And i am happy with J.C.Taylor Ins Co for being flexable and helpfull.. Also when i was rear ended in my 56 plymouth wagon they made sure the cop cars insurance paid me in full for the totaled car.HAPPY MOTORING+DRIVE SAFELY......Old Mopar Guy

Hagerty. Although I have never had to make a claim and don't know what the response would be, I sense it would be good. I received my renewal notice (due in May) and they suggested that I change from our agreed upon value of $15K to $17K because of improvement in Mopar values. I may or may not; that they had provided the information for an informed decision was nice....

That is not a good idea. When you have a claim, such as your vehicle is stolen at 3am one night, it will be necessary to file a false police report in order to make your claim. The result is fraud against the insurance company and some risk of prosecution for filing the false claim..... Insurance companies somtimes question neighbors, friends and relative when considering paying a significant claim. That's just my two cents worth.

Chrysler 300c, I'm not sure I understand exactly what you are talking about. Insurance to value is a good idea. The company suggesting that you do that is a good idea on their part, because they get a few more bucks, and you don't feel shafted on settlement because you didn't insure it for enough to make you whole. You want to make sure that your house is insured to value because there is a principle called co-insurance. If you only insure your house for half what the cost to replace it is, you will only get half of any loss, including partial losses. If you are insured to at least 80%, they will cover losses in full, up to the policy limit. A decent agent will tell you when you are under insured.
Those of us in the insurance business understand prices, because we buy these things every day. When we tell you that you are under insured before you have the loss, consider it a favor--the guy is kind of watching your back.
That is one reason the insurance settlements leave a sour taste in so many mouths--they didn't buy enough to start with, then they complain when they don't get enough to put it back.

HAGERTY !!

Price seemed very reasonable to me.

As far as I can tell if something happens it will either be

fixed or paid for.  I'd give them a call.

50scars.... If you are in the insurance business, then you surely must understand what is meant by fraud. If you represent that your vehicle is sited at one place in a garage and it is not regularly garaged as stated, then you risk not being covered for your loss. Re-read narleycharlie's post, telling him to take a picture of it in another guys garage and send it to the insurance company.

OK you are correct there. I thought you were refering to someone increasing the value of their car. Sorry.

Thank you all for your input.

This weekend I'll be trying to figure out locked storage for my car.

I did check Hargerty. Their coverage is better than what I have today and a few dollars cheaper. I haven't gotten quotes from the Grundy or J.C. Taylor, but will if I can figure out the storage.
