Location: Lemoore CA		I don't know if it is the film or the way things actually looked, but those pictures of the forwardlooks in the 60's make them look severely antiquated compared to the other cars on the street, and the color shot of the 57 Plymouth sedan makes that car look pretty well used, when it is really only about years old.

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada		Six or seven salty winters in Pittsburgh, with it's narrow streets, paving blocks (brick streets), steep grades, nasty discharge from the steel mills, etc. took an enormous toll on vehicles. Some of electric streetcars seen in these photos remained in service there from the 1940s into the 1990s, going through various degrees of rebuilding along the way.

Motorists had to patch rust holes to pass the annual inspections and many, many cars were bondo-ed up and partially repainted to sneak past the State inspectors. It gave them a more "wobegone" appearance in a decade or less.

Incidently, I remember many Forward Look Mopars, '58-'61 Ch*vys and '55-'60 F*rds with duct tape over the rust holes around the headlights and on top of the fenders, to keep slush from kicking up onto the windshields during winter. That was in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, during the mid to late 1960s. Wisconsin did not have the stringent inspection standards Pennsylvania does and I've seen plywood floor patches, etc. in late '50s-early '60s cars in Southeastern Wisconsin.

Location: bishop, ca		James, I agree with you; the over-reaching style, of the late-50's FWDLK'ers took on a rather severe, garish appearance, like an older woman wearing too-much make up, after they had attained some age, and wear-and-tear. The newer body designs were more self-contained and less flamboyant,
and didn't serve to "shout-out" to an oberserver, like ours admittedly do (admit it: ours are NOT quiet designs!), which makes our cars
so much FUN, to drive!

The downside was, our cars tended to be discarded, rather than be restored whenever they stumbled, because there was always something newer-and-better
to be seen-in, rather than to have to be seen in a Yesterday's-car.


Of course, nowadays, its a DIFFERENT story!

But yes, the early to mid '60s cars do make the finned monsters look outdated...just as the '55 to '61 Mopars made the '49-'54 versions look frumpy and out of date!

That's the name of the game, for sure, Neil!

Incidently, I discovered this just before my seventh birthday.

I was in the garage, crawling under the cars (I believe I was chasing spiders after knocking them out of their webs. They ran for cover as I attempted to scoop them into a jar.)

Anyway, Dad's '59 Impala and Mom's '64 Bel Air wagon were parked side by side. As I crawled around in pursuit of my prey, I noticed the chassis, springs, shocks and exhaust were nearly identical. The sheet metal differences were cloaking two cars with virtually identical underpinnings.

Location: Lemoore CA		To me the pictures all look exciting "obviously a postcard trick" but what I mean is The cars are mostly shown traveling, going to new places, people are having fun boating and vacationing. Obviously a far cry from the real life of picking up groceries at the supermarket.

Location: bishop, ca		What is particularly interesting, about the BxW photo, of the '57 Coro convie, is that the car appears to have NON-white wheels!

Dodge advertising had their graphic-arts agency air-brush on body-matching wheel-colors, but, in actual practice, virtually (and-all-
that-I've-ever-seen, including my own car, which now has red-painted wheels) .... every real-world car has been found to have had
OEM white-painted wheels.

THIS photograph was apparently taken in the summertime, so that it is certainly possible that the owner custom-painted its wheels.

BUT: the owner, for whatever reason, did not bother to install SPINNER hubcaps, along with the painted wheels????

Also, the car is a 'stripper' model, having only one body color, no(!!) radio, or right-hand outside rear view mirror, and has non-
tinted windshield (or windows, by extrapolation).

It DOES have a two-tone steering wheel, though.

So, given, that this is a Coro, with apparently few options, to what extent would its owner have been interested in custom-painting
its wheels????

Ah, research......

Location: new york		its great to see these photos ,i can spot and identify almost every car in the photos . it was nice to see every car had a look all its own . mopar or not i would rather drive any car in these photos than any thing built today..... HAPPY MOTORING...

That was in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, during the mid to late 1960s. Wisconsin did not have the stringent inspection standards Pennsylvania does and I've seen plywood floor patches, etc. in late '50s-early '60s cars in Southeastern Wisconsin.

Ohio didn't have a very stringent inspection standard in the 1960s either. My first year of college (1969) I had a well used 1959 Plymouth Suburban as my daily driver. It was only 10 years old at the time, but it had major rust out issues in the driver's and passenger's footwell. I fixed it by cutting plywood for both sides to put on the floorpan. It was necessary because without the plywood I would be running on the pavement like Fred Flintstone. I also needed the plywood as there was no sound metal to bolt the front seat to. It worked for awhile and made the seat operate normally again. Those were the days. :madman:  :laugh:

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada		The black steel poles holding the streetlights in Brett's early 1960s Racine postcard were orginally used to hold the trolley wires for both local streetcars and the Milwaukee-Racine-Kenosha Rapid Transit interurban trains. Many of those poles were still there the last time I visited Racine.

The photo of the parking lot Mark posted is labeled "RockParking1950s.jpg", but we can see early to mid 1960s cars scattered among the finned beauties.

I have service station pump island lights like those seen in the "McCue's Woodlawn Esso" postcard. One is used as lighted flagpole. The other will be used to light a portion of our backyard.

I also like Brett's shot of the "Hooked Rug Shop", but I suppose I'm biased towards those '59 Plymouth wagons.

P.S.- I've included a photo of one of my gasoline pump island lights, while it was still in storage. It's from a 1940s Idaho Conoco service station. I added the photocell to the top.

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada		Oh, and here's a shot of Racine, circa 1947, showing one of those Rapid Transit trains. These babies hit speeds in excess of 70 mph between towns, once they left the streets.

One of those black steel poles, holding an older style streetlight, can be seen on the far left. Another can be seen, a little further down the street.

No finned Mopars in this shot.

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada		During a 1977 repaint, my '72 Satellite Sebring became a "naked-sided" car. Rather than deal with the flimsy trim which just collected dents, my folks had it all removed.

So it wound up looking like less than even a base line Satellite.

I doubt I will reinstall the correct the stock trim if I plan to use it as a driver.
