Info on the accident scene: Two accidents on Santa Ana Freeway

Jan. 13, 1962: Four men were injured in two accidents on the Santa Ana Freeway.

At 8:30 a.m. a stalled car was rear ended in the fast lane of the northbound Santa Ana Freeway – numbers 3 and 4 in above photo.

After the first accident, Los Angeles Times staff photographer Frank. Q. Brown arrived to take pictures and parked his car, foreground, on the southbound shoulder of the freeway.

Forty minutes after the first accident, five cars collided in the southbound lanes. They were, according to the Los Angeles Times, “slowed by curious drivers ahead of them.” These cars are numbers 1, 2 and 5 in photo above. The overturned car missed Brown’s car by an inch.

Arrow points to injured driver in the second accident, Jesse Kasner. Two cars involved in the second accident were able to drive away.

58 DESOTOS RULE - 2014-07-28 1:04 PM

Nice looking 1958 Imperial but the color is not to my taste. Surprisingly "titty pink" seems to have been a popular color for Forward Look cars of the era considering how many of them I have come across in the years since. I don't know what to make of the 1957 Mercury on the other side of the street. That purple color seems too garish for 1958.

I had the opportunity to attend the seminar with Virgil Exner Jr at the Concours at St.John's last weekend and during the presentation Jr mentioned that his Dad was fond of pastel colours like that pink, hence the promotion of it and the number of cars finished that way.

Back in the day, pink had no modern connotations, and Judy Garland was just an
actress/stage performer.

If it's true that everyone has a double somewhere, then that woman is my mother's sister's double. If the boy was a year or so younger, I'd say it was her and her oldest, as he looks the same as I remember him. And to keep it on a FL Mopar subject, her husband would have had a '57 Chrysler 300C at the time the picture was taken.

Dave overlooked mentioning, above, that this Dodge Matador is a D500.

I'll bet that El Groucho, above, would be worth $1K, today.

Ray, it is a postcard and it says Rugby, ND on the back of it.

And you can look around in Rugby, ND, through STreet View, when you follow the link to my website.

Yeah, I couldn't get street view to work at all when I tried to find the location otherwise...

Somehow the topography doesn't look right in the photo, also the density of the shopping area. I guess the town has lost a lot of population since then.

In the "Groucho" picture above, did anyone notice that the L and the O are missing from the signage on the wall? Could be early setup for marketing of the cars...

Think that many cars got door dings in Frisco, above?

That 1956 dealership photo may have been taken in a Service area; you can see a showroom(?) in the background
with an overhead banner.

The 56 DeSoto's tires are dirty, so it is not a 'showroom' car...unless that dealership really WAS slovenly!

BTW, check out the 1956 PLY overhead mobile in the photo!

[edit: upon further review: that "room" probably was a 'showroom']

Thanks Neil, I learned a new word today... And yes, I think that room was part of the showroom (you can see the sales office in the back), and the dealer had a untidy showroom! BTY, it is a very cool picture of a dealer showroom in 1956, showing how it was setup and all the marketing displays! Additionally, did anyone make note that the Desoto is a Sportsman?

<snip> unless that dealership really WAS slovenly!

slov·en·ly
adjective \'sl?-v?n-le also 'slä-\

: messy or untidy
: done in a careless way

1956 Dodge Coronet at the Molton Hotel in Birmingham, Alabama: The car has a 1958 Dade County plate on it, so it's from Miami, Florida.
