Expert 5K+ Posts: 6500 Location: Newark, Texas (Fort Worth) | I have an old canvas water bag. I spliced a new rope on it, as it didn't have one.. I filled it with water and it took about 8 hours to leak out.. Does anyone know how to make a canvas water bag hold water again!! Maybe a little longer than 8 hours... I think it's supposed to leak out. That's how the evaporative cooling works. The air passing over the wet canvas evaporates the water and cools the contents of the bag and also cools the air before it passes through the radiator, to help cool the engine too. : Jeff is correct about the bags and our water was gone before 8 hours before we drank it. I think there is a difference of opinion about whether the water is for people or the car. If it was for the car then why the drip bag. It didn't taste good unless you were thirsty, which since we lived in Arizona was always the case. I always thought canvas water bags were around long before radiators. Ken, Not sure about the little white bags on the front bumper, but Lister bags have been around since about 1910 according to Olive Drab. Ft. Riley, Kansas, in July was pretty dry, too, and the water was very welcome. This must have been the only exception to Col Custer's request to "not change anything until he returned" from the Little Big Horn patrol. They haven't. Tom I don't know whether the bags were originally intended for drinking water or not but I do know that my grandfather, who ranched sheep and cattle in Wyoming from the 20's through the mid 60's used to carry a canvas bag of drinking water when he was out tending his animals or working his alfalfa fields. Ma says that when she was a girl it was always a treat to ride out to see him and have a drink out of the bag. It was always so cool and refreshing. They are supposed to leak. The army uses large canvas "Lister Bags" filled with water, with multiple little spigots mounted near the bottom, that hang from trees. The leaking water actually ends up cooling the water inside, giving you nice cold water to drink. The radiator bags use the same idea. Marc.

I think that your bag will leaks less if you fill it up more frequently so that the fibers swells. Yes, the lister bags was used by the military, way back. I think it's so cool to see the cars with those bags, as prepared for a rough ride

Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | The new bridge bypasses the dam but afaik the old road is open for "tourists" who want to go down the old road to the dam and visitor center and take the tour. We had a terrorism expert come talk at one of our Engineering conferences and he pointed out that at the time the new bridge was being planned terrorism wasn't quite as much a worry as it later became and that the new bridge provides a perfect location for someone to launch a missile directly at the dam. There are also WW2 bunkers on the mountain sides around the dam that were manned by snipers during the war to protect the dam from possible saboteurs.

Location: Parts Unknown | The Plymouth looks very new. The Chrysler, not so much ! In fact, the Chrysler reminds me very much of the period when I began chasing finned cars and most of them looked just like this ! And if anyone wonders why I rant about proper whitewalls and wheels, it is because of exactly what you see here. The right wheels and tires are the quickest way to make a car look cared for and off the "beater" status.

Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | Unfortunately Plymouth did not offer a Silver in 1960. You could get Silver Metallic (M) on a Valiant, though, and the same colour Dodge offered as Pewter Metallic. Quite a stunning colour combination.

Quite a stunning colour combination. in canada? in the US they did. silver is in the paint ship chart (not valiant) also in the upholstery/paint selection book that has samples of seat covers and conv tops. i have seen several silver painted 60s, but don't recall silver&red. Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | I'm looking at the US Ditzler and DuPont charts. The Ditzler chart, which lists Plymouth and Valiant together, has Silver Poly (M - 31661) as a Valiant only colour. The chart has 'VA' beside the Silver Poly. entry and no 'PL'. The DuPont Plymouth chart, which lists Valiant separate from Plymouth, does not list a Silver Metallic for Plymouth but does for Valiant, along with a note stating to check the Dodge listings for a colour chip. Plymouth did offer a Platinum Metallic (L- 31746), but that is more grey than silver. Plymouth did use a Silver Crane colour (31746), which is Platinum Metallic, on a number of interior panels and trim, but do not know the second colour that went with it. The Silver Metallic (31661) was not offered in Canada, although the Platinum Metallic (31746) was, although called Silver Grey Metallic (K).
