Expert Posts: 1287 | Dave -- An interesting picture of the Poncho dealership. That is Ace Wilson's Royal Pontiac in Royal Oak, Michigan, which is famous for the powerhouse Pontiac Catalina and Venturas that Jim Wangers of GTO fame drag raced in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The dealership was famed for its "Royal Pontiac Bobcats" with all kinds of HiPo goodies, including the first aluminum front sheet metal (so thin that "Do Not Lean On" was painted on them). Wangers biggest NHRA triumph was at the 1960 Nationals when his '60 Royal Bobcat barely beat Al Ecstrand's '60 SonoRamic Commando equipped Fury in the top stock elimination competition. Jim had been a big dog for advertising for the Chrysler Corp. until Bunky Knudson stole him away. Just before he left Chrysler, Wangers had plans for a "Black Fury" project, an all-black '58 Fury especially intended for dragging. It would have been interesting if he would have stayed with Chrysler; perhaps a '64 Valiant GTO? His work with Delorean on the GTO made it the first really well-known, if most overrated, muscle car of the era. Only a relatively few Goats had the highest horse engines, and Wangers established its reputation right off the start by putting a 421 engine in one and passing it off as a 389 to the media. I do agree with him about the 426 Hemi in that while it was a great engine on the strip, on the street it was very difficult to keep in tune with the old Carter AFBs. He liked to wait until late to cruise Woodward and then look for a Street Hemi car. By then, its carbs had loaded up so much that it was easy meat for him. Joe Godec

Or more to the point, how could so many people look at a car like that and think "I'll junk it !" ??? I am aware of the thinking of the time and how they fell rapidly out of "fashion", but I will never understand how anyone could think that was not a fleeting and glamorous car. Just can't do it !
