The "Peaks Pike" Pic (nice alliteration) is very near the top , clearly above timberline. The road is now paved all the way which does reduce erosion, but the jury is still out as to the effect that has on the Pikes Peak Hill Climb since the pavement is somewhat narrower than the complete roadway. Incidently, the mountain's name is officially "Pikes Peak" without the apostrophe although it was named after explorer Zebulon Pike who said it would "never be climbed." The fastest time up to the top last year (from the race's starting line, about midway) was by an electric car and it made it in 9 min., 7 secs.

'cause "nobody" likes it but maybe "somebody" does.

In 1974 I was working in a scrap yard in Central WI. and was doing motor disassembly to clean cast.
We were getting rail cars full of motors weekly from out Oklahoma way. Each one would have at least a dozen early Hemi's in them as well as many other early Chrysler Corp. engines.
I had all the different valve covers on my garage walls until someone broke in a stole them all!
It almost made me sick having to tear those engines apart like that!

The 1957 Plymouth Comet Junior is quite interesting, since Comet Coach Co. was usually associated with the Oldsmobile chassis. During 1959, the company became known as Cotner-Bevington.

And seat design and materials in the pic showing the center mounted dash mirror! Also looks like the two-tone only includes the top and not the sweep. I imagine the advertising department actually used a '57 and transposed the '58 side trim on the car. The bubble windshield looks right though.

Outside of the relocated mirror, what is the difference between a 57 and 58 dash ?

They are directly interchangeable, change out the flat patterned background trim.

Car Life - March 1958 - has same kind of '58 Fireflite pics with '57 wheelcovers and the side sweep has same color as other lower body. No wide roof moldings. No stone shields.

I have to echo the Wizards words.

Mighty scenarios indeed.

This is still the best thread, the pics you guys post are brilliant. Keep up the good work. Takes me to another time and place, and I love it.

Imagine a copy of the best pictures from this thread in a book, that would be cool. Be a bloody big book though.

Steve.

The passenger ashtray was a bolt on and not part of the actual dash. Was it not
available in 57 ? I have owned/seen plenty of 57's with the passenger ashtray. I
always figured it was an option, as some cars have it, some don't.

OK, so what is the crazy-weird emblem on the latest down-the-side shot, where
the fuel injection emblem usually goes ???

Neil would be all abuzz about pre-production build-outs over this topic.

Emblem says "Sportsman".

They flopped the photo.
