Location: Parts Unknown | Lawrence Welk .... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDGFXgJpMvI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCqJslURFVY As a kid, Lawrence Welk was the pinnacle of boring. His stiff, awkward, and hopelessly corny style was nauseating. My Grandmother imposed a death warrant for anyone who might speak a peep while Lawrence Welk was on. But I loved my Grandma and would sit there beside her as she thrilled over the fountain of dull that was pouring forth. Then the whole scene of Googie and Forward Look faded away and ol' Larry toddled on as a weird anachronism to a different time. My appreciation for the time was piqued with the "weightless" architecture and the "flying" cars with wings, but began to sift down deeper the sparkly sheer curtains like Mr. Welk stands in front of when he does the introduction to Calcutta. Old Larry actually was pretty hip, in spite of being the definition of "square". Like our finned cars, most people just too lazy or stupid to know a good thing when they see it.

Also note the small vent windows in the rear side windows.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9898 Location: Lower Mainland BC | I guess this is cheating: 1954 Plymouth Belmont Concept Car: "Less sporty looking than a Corvette thanks to its 114-inch wheelbase, the Plymouth Belmont concept still had quite a bit in common with Chevrolet’s sports car. Both were true roadsters that lacked exterior door handles, and both used bodies made from lightweight fiberglass. The Belmont, however, brought V-8 power from its inception. With long, flowing lines, the car just beg to be driven. While the large chrome headlight bezels are perhaps a little too overbearing, the styling is otherwise simple and clean. Had it gone into production in 1955, the Belmont might have proven a worthy adversary for the Corvette and Thunderbird." Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | The Belmont's fibreglass body was built by Briggs and used Dodge's 114" wheelbase V8 chassis with Dodge's 140-bhp hemi V8. The engine was mated to Plymouth's Hy-Drive 3-speed no-automatic transmission. You had three speeds forward and one reverse, but you needed the clutch to shift into and out of all gears.

Location: Parts Unknown | Wow ! That Spokane Street photo is EXACTLY how it looked when I was a kid ! My great grandparents lived about two miles from there. If one were to spin on there heels and face west, the road hit the steep hill about a quarter mile on and divided. Going left, the road headed up the draw to Fauntleroy, going right, the road went up and over the hill to Alki. At the base of the hill, just over the photographer's right shoulder was the massive Bethlehem Steel mill. This photo is an awesome example of why I no longer live in Seattle .... 500 days a year of dark and grey, and ridiculous traffic. Today, this area is buried under a freeway. Up the draw to the south from right about where this photo was taken, a street rook off for White Center. About a mile up that road we found a number of notable cars, including a yard FULL of 1958 Buicks and a 59 Plymouth Sport Fury ragtop.

Expert Posts: 1287 | Lads -- A neat ram Belvie possibly in the pit area of a drag strip or at least set up for racing. Beyond the "Sky-High" rear window and the Aero Steering Wheel, there are two things of note: check the "cheater slicks" so this might be later than 1960, plus the roofline of the car behind suggests a later model. I don't recall cheater slicks as being legal in the stock classes then. Also, for the guys that keep insisting wire wheels were "in" back then, just look at those chrome wheels. We old fudds from the era left the wires to the Hollywood blonds in T-Birds and the bald heads in their Buick "deuce-and-a-quarters," but never (repeat, NEVER!) put something that was no longer "cool" on a high-torquing MoPar with drag racing in mind. Very neat pic indeed. Joe Godec '57 Chrysler 300C, '60 Fury SonoRamic, '65 Fuelie Vette (with cast aluminum knock-offs), '65 Sport Fury 426-S/4-Speed

Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | The wagon is a 1960 Mercury while the car to the left of it is a 1960 Lincoln Continental Mark V. The centre section of the rear window rolls down (electrically, of course). The last year of the Lincoln tanks. (131" wheelbase unibody). Lincoln, the biggest Ford product of 1960, and to the left of the Lincoln is the smallest - the Falcon. Looks like a 1959 Cadillac to the left of the Falcon. For the Mopars, a nice 1957 Belvedere hardtop without Sportone and a 1960 Plymouth Savoy Fleet sedan - no side trim and no trim around the rear window.
