Highball57 - 2010-11-19 8:48 PM '58 Olds is correct for that wagon; at the rear, you can just make out the upper taillight tube and lower "skeg" where the 4 chrome lines would be. They must have a Desert Water Bag or something on the grille under the headlights. TG

Maybe a closer look might help...? Although the quality of this postcard isn't very good...

Looks like a 1958 Super 88 Fiesta hardtop wagon with roofrack and tinted glass(probably air con too),wonder if he is going to get his TransPortable radio out of the car,can anyone identify the fin of the next car to the left of the Olds?.

The distinguishing rear quarter script and front quarter emblem are blocked by respectively the tree and adjacent car. But the golden hub caps can be easily spotted.
I think this is a 1956 DeSoto Adventurer & 1957 Chrysler Saratoga at Wilson Lodge, Oglebay Park near Wheeling, West Virginia
The *#%$@ tree is still there...

Nice photo, Jim!!

That greenish-blue car on the right is a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere sport coupe, I think.

Definitely a 57 Belvedere. The roof is Dodge-Plymouth only, and the tail lights seal the deal.

Doctor DeSoto - 2010-11-20 4:47 PM Definitely a 57 Belvedere. The roof is Dodge-Plymouth only, and the tail lights seal the deal.

So, it IS a 1956 DeSoto Adventurer, right?

At first, I thought the other car was a Plymouth (remember, Neil?), but looking at the trim (running all the way over the front quarter) and the shape of the rear lights led me to believe it could be a Chrylser.

Looking again, it lacks the typical Chrysler wing tip, and it has the typical Plymouth Hub Caps too.

I trust you guys! It'll be a Plymouth.

My County Stadium negatives are dated 1954 and 1957. Nothing in between. From opening season and the 1957 World's Series. Look in the background of this one:

I made an error. While these negatives date from the years 1954 and 1957, the Braves' first season in Milwaukee was 1953.

Doctor DeSoto - 2010-11-22 6:28 AM Good Lord ! What's the story with the Winnie Hogg photos ???? That is one rough looking discount backlot !!!

Here's what I found:

"Over twenty years ago, the Dodge dealer in Quarryville, Pennsylvania went out of business when the owner died. Winnie Hogg must have been an odd fellow. He took cars in trade, but when they didn't get the price he wanted, he just left them to rot. There were at least 50 cars that had sat for decades, driven to the spot where they were found. A lot of them went for under $100."

and with the 1957 Dodge Coronet:

"This eccentric Dodge dealer took nice cars in trade, then let them rot if he couldn't get his price. He died in 1983 and this was the auction of cars that hadn't moved since they were almost new. That is blacktop pavement those wheels are sinking in."

A couple of interesting ones here,in the drag racing one there are 2 Plymouth Sedans a '59 and a '57/'58 also a '57 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser (with skirts and continental kit),the Olds Rocket has had it's roof altered and a larger windscreen fitted and the '57 Chevrolet has DeSoto style tooth grille fitted and in the second one the Imperial owner is now wishing he hadn't ordered the Southampton hardtop sedan,as the pillared version would have taken the hit better.

The 57 Mercury is NOT a Turnpike Cruiser and it does NOT have a continental kit. It would have a GOLD anodized projectile if it was a Turnpike Cruiser (not the darker body color) and the rear bumper would extend about a foot further away from the rear of the car if it had a continental kit. It does however have factory cruiser skirts.....

Similar story at Peak Hill in New South Wales... dealer closed up shop, he didn't die, but he simply left everything in the yard to more or less rot away. Fortuitously there is one Forward Look car in there.

I love this last pic of the Plymouth wagon, really tells a story - like the weathered, faithful family hauler that's nearing the end of her lifespan, loaded until her tired rear springs cave, but still doing what she does best...providing her owners with a memorable roadtrip. That's what I envision anyway

Jeff, I don't see that Plymouth that way at all...

To me it's near-new, on a family holiday, besmirched with the results of driving along wet and dusty roads. Look at the rear tyres, they're showing the same signs as the springs, loaded to the gills and doing their best to cope!

That's what cars are built for!

Los Angeles changed too much.

At 3rd and Hill Streets a visitor in the '40s would have encountered another long-time L.A. institution — Angel's Flight incline railway, which charged a nickel fare.
The railway was removed from the hill by the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) prior to 1970 so that the entire top of the hill could be lowered to allow construction of a two-level access environment, with plaza and pedways on top and auto roads underneath.
The plan reflected the philosophy of the modernist or International Style, which rejected the traditional city street.

Terrific postcards, Joakim!
How pathetic would it be to walk into Jeffries, go past all the fine Mopars and end up with a Simca?

Time to interrupt this thread with a visit from the local law!
The first three photos are marked Chicago PD.
The fourth Miami FL, the fifth Allen County Indiana Sheriff's Dept.
The rest are unmarked.
Enjoy, and drive safe out there!

I want to again thank all you who post these terrific memories here in this thread. It made may day back home. I REALLY look forward to seeing it while stationed here in beautiful sunny Afghanistan !!!!

Well, lot's of success there, Brent! I have some more postcards coming soon which I had piled up at Neil's (US-shipping only) and will try to post them in a sort-of daily manner.

My stack of postcards arrived, thanks Neil!
And happy thanksgiving to all!
Now, let's see if I can keep up this daily pace...

A nice addition to the stadiums we saw here before:

Not many 50s cars left in year 1969? I see a STW cars at R/H side from 69-70?

Gang Sue's, above, features our old friend, Mr. 58 Soto.

It's too bad that someone, like D500Jim, who knows how to DO this, doesn't create a separate thread (maybe on
the Members Rides board) featuring the many advertising photos made by the owner of that car.

There must be well-over 10 PC's featuring his car in them, as a visual trade-mark, posted to date, on this thread.
