The race is next to the Indianapolis 500 as the United States' oldest motorsport event, its first running being in 1916. Since Pikes [note: no apostrophe] Peak is virtually in my backyard here in Colorado Springs, I have been up it a few times but it seems that every time I drive up, I get stuck behind some "flatland tourister" who's on his brakes ALL the time -- even going uphill! BTW, the road is paved all the way now, but because construction at the top has drastically reduced parking, you have to ride a shuttle bus during the tourist season. But not many fences at all... And, with some steep drops, a variety of bends, and all those cyclists (!!) pedalling furiously to reach the top, when you're going around a big left-hander and you look out through the windscreen across the dash and all you can see is blue skies and the tops of clouds, I decided it was daunting. Then I went to Mt Evans. About the same height, it was sealed a lot earlier (like 30-40 years earlier) and to a different standard, similar bends, same amount of fences (or less), that one had me thinking I should turn around and go back. Four times I let my desire to get to the top prevent me doing this. That one wasn't daunting, it was intimidating. But with both you've got to love that you can look down on the Rocky Mountains, and that you can see so far into the distance when there's a clear day. Expert Posts: 1290 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Lads -- The pic with the puddle was taken at Glen Cove which is the staging area for the race which actually starts about a mile or so further up. Incidently, the video talks about Bobby Unser of Albuquerque whose dad, Louie, was named "King of the Hill" because of all the times he won. Bobby, of course, didn't do too badly himself but he and his brother Al are more noted for their USAC indy car work. BTW, the winning time last year was about eight minutes. As side note, my wife and I spent the 1970s in Albuquerque and she taught school there. Two of her pupils were Al Jr. and Bobby Jr. She says they were nice little boys but were rather difficult pupils as even in the first and second grades they really had no scholastic interests at all as all they wanted to do was to be race car drivers like their dads. And Perkins Motor Co. is still in business and one of the sponsors of the climb, although the company founder, Will Perkins, just passed away a few months ago. Even when he was in his later years he took an interest in FWL cars and the first time I took the Big-Tailed Beast in for a lube job, someone told him about it. He told the service manager not to let me leave until he came from home to see the car. He was a pretty cool guy when it came to those old MOPARs. Joe | ||

However, it is a good point that the '57 was involved because it wasn't unibody. It does say in the video that the purpose was to prove the integrity of they unibody construction. | ||

Most old cars fell into the hands of people who didn't care and did their car ownership on the cheap, resulting in ugly tires and cars slowly allowed to go to seed. But the owners who did keep their cars properly tired tended to take really good care of them, period .... driving around old time capsules that inspired minds like mine to a life of chasing rusty junk ! | ||

There was a period between 1962 or so, and the mid to late seventies when there were NO wide whitewalls being produced. I owned my 1960 Polara from 1974 through 1995. It had one inch bias ply whitewalls at the time I bought it, and a couple of more sets before I bought a set of bias ply Remington wide whites that came out in the late seventies I believe. Then when those wore out I bought another set of one inch bias ply whitewalls, because there was a detail shop in town that had a sidewall cutter, and for $5.00 per tire I had the whitewalls cut out to just over 2 inches. Those were still on the car when I sold it in 1995 but were getting pretty worn. The current owner of the car, my good friend Ron has a set of American Classics 2 1/4" whitewalls on it now. | ||

Expert Posts: 1290 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Lads -- My '60 Fury came off the lot in May 1960 with the wide Goodrich (I think) whitewalls (approx. 3") but with that big engine coupled with 4.10 gears, they didn't last overly long. In 1962, the narrow whites came out and since I thought they looked cool, I replaced the factory skins with the new style. In 1964, the '65 Sport Fury I bought had the narrow whites, but I replaced them with a set of Goodyear Blue Streaks which had a medium blue band about a half-inch wide. The Sport Fury, in turn, was replaced by a '67 R/T which had Goodrich Redlines. If I remember, those Redlines came out as an option for the early Goats (perhaps even the '65 or even the '64) and were quite the thing at the time. Gold lines were an option on the '65 Corvette but they never really caught on. Joe Godec | ||

I have a better one of him in the car, but I need to dig it out from the photo collections one of these days. I was recently talking to my mom and she said it was white with a (light?) green stripe and top. It was before I was born so I don't remember and my oldest sibling was only 6. | ||
