The 56 Dodge in Grouse Mountain BC, Canada, circa 1965-66 is a Custom Royal with a trailer hitch. It looks very dull compared to the shiny 64 Dart 270 behind.

But it's a very wimpy trailer hitch, being attached to the rear bumper only ...

Grouse Mountain BC, Canada, circa 1965-66, and this picture originated on the Flickr web site courtesy of the female person who originally posted it. She's not in the picture, but her mom and grandparents are. They (the grandparents) lived in Vancouver at that time, so this ski resort is within driving distance of a major city. Can anyone in PacNW/SW Canada identify the resort as Grouse Mountain?

I would say it's Grouse Mountain. It's just a few miles north of Vancouver, BC on the southwest coast of British Columbia and is a popular ski area today too.

The shiny black Dodge Dart in the photo isn't a Dart. It's a Canadian Valiant. from 1963 through 1966 Canadian Valiants used Valiant front clips on Dart bodies. They were not sold as Plymouths, just plain Valiants - and were sold at both Plymouth and Dodge dealers. The 64-66 Barracudas sold in Canada were badged as Valiant Barracudas, not Plymouths.

Note also that the 62 Pontiac at the rear of the photo is likely a six cylinder Strato-Chief or Laurentian, built for the Canadian market. The top Canuck Pontiac was a Parisienne. They were built on a Chevrolet chassis with Chevy engines and transmissions, as in 283 / Powerglide. The right rear car is a 1957-58 Ford Consul, a British import, companion car to the Ford Zephyr. The Consul was a four cyl, the Zephyr a six.

The Big Boy restaurants were granted multi-statewide franchises.

In Ohio it was Frische's; in MI it was Elias Brothers, and in CA it was Bob's.

So, what state had Shoney's???

Edit: the intraweb makes questioning/researching things too easy...

The Southeast U. S., including Georgia, had Shoney's Big Boy resaurants all over that region. Eventually the Shoney"s people dropped the Big Boy brand from their franchise, which became known as Shoney's restaurants. Many of them have since closed, but there is one Shoney's in west suburban Atlanta that is still open, at Thornton Road and I-20.

Marc's Big Boy (Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, 1958–1995, founded by Ben Marcus and Gene Kilberg) were owned by the Marcus Corporation. Some were sold, others were converted to Marc's Cafe & Coffee Mill and later Annie's American Cafe. Most now operate as Perkins.

I even have an original comic book from the restraunt on Capital Drive, Milwaukee WI circa 1960's!

And, that 57 Coronet is probably painted Moonstone Gray, and Ebony.

Since it's got dual exhausts (with the exhaust deflectors), it probably has the "Power Package" option, which
was the 4-bbl carb, dual exhausts, and the deflectors.

An owner, however, could buy only the dual pipes, along with the standard 2-bbl carb, on either the Coro or on the Royal models.

The Custom Royal models gave you the 4-bbl carb, dual exhausts and the deflectors as standard equipment.

As featured in the 1974 Charles Bronson film Mr. Majestyk, this '58 Belvedere sedan was used in just one scene at the beginning of the film. Female lead actress Linda Cristal, who was Bronson's romantic interest in the film, gave a reasonable turn as the shotgun passenger in the Belvy and was adorably sweet throughout the rest of the movie, wish I could have seen more of her afterwards. For the Belvy, this was its only moment of fame, and when I first saw this movie I thought that was probably just as well because I feared that the producers might wreck it. They wrecked much newer cars instead.

I'm lovin it. The car, not the food...

That WhackDonald's picture has been posted here before, and I cross-posted the original to my Flickr account. It was located in a suburb of Chicago, most likely in Oak Park.

A version of this picture was posted by me before, but it had a digital watermark added and the theater marquee was whitewashed. It's my hometown of Davenport, Iowa, at the Capitol Theatre, at West 3rd and Ripley streets. With the theater's marquee clearly seen advertising the film, this particular still picture was taken in the summer of 1961. Buddy Holly played at this theater, in one of his final performances just days prior to his fatal plane crash. With so much history at this street corner, I have disliked seeing an ugly digital watermark messing things up in an otherwise good historical picture.

This is the first time I remember having to repost one of my own pictures. Wish I had some to post of our family's cars ('54 Coronet, '56 Belvy, '61 Dart Seneca).

We have a Miccy D's just like that one here in Portland, Oregon on Powell Blvd. I can see it everyday of the week from the interstate. They have a modern one just feet behind the beautifully arched one. The old one just sits. I never see any action around it. Thank God it has survived. We are losing our history.
