Location: Parts Unknown | hemidave - 2013-05-17 4:47 AM 1971 ============================================== Those two photos exemplify how despised finned cars were so shortly after they were made. That Merc is a ten year old car ! The Plymouth only a couple years older ! It is nothing usual to see 20-30 year old cars on the road out west today where they aren't prematurely doomed by body rust. In 1971, perfectly good finned cars were junked just because people didn't want to be seen in them. Amazing, isn't it ?

Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | I posted a video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfp2XdzAmzg from the 60's of our family pulling out of the parking lot at Pacific Ocean Park (POP) near LA, CA. It's mainly got the Chrysler in it plus a little bit of whales swimming. Can't recall what year Chrysler it was, around a 58.

Location: Parts Unknown | Note that the above 56 DeSoto is an "Official Car" ..... this would opposed to being an Official Pace Car. And Ray, ... if YOU can't tell us if that's a Renault 4, who can ? Methinks the 58 Fireflite convertible photo is doctored or strangely staged. The car's position and angle of the wheels have no bearing on the curve of the road.

Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | I'm pretty sure the car wasn't moving when they took the photo. Most likely it was just a staged photo.

Expert Posts: 2473 Location: Dalveen, Queensland, Australia | Originally posted by Doctor DeSoto Note that the above 56 DeSoto is an "Official Car" ..... this would opposed to being an Official Pace Car..... That's pretty obvious... .....And Ray, ... if YOU can't tell us if that's a Renault 4, who can? It's so long since I've seen one! I didn't want to speak out without being sure, but the main reason for mentioning it was that it poses so much of a contrast to all the bigger and more powerful cars around it. After all, with 747ccx (or was it 847ccs?) you'd hardly see it as a power monster. .....Methinks the 58 Fireflite convertible photo is doctored or strangely staged. The car's position and angle of the wheels have no bearing on the curve of the road. Spot on... and a good spot... A photo that's been 'shopped' before Photoshop!

Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | No, it did not have AC. And it could get HOT. Luckily, we kids never really noticed the heat. I never thought much about how hot it was till I was over 16. One day in heavy traffic driving back from work in my first car, 60 corvair, I realized that my upper lip felt like it was about to burn off. After that lightbulb went off I swore I would never again own a car that did not have AC.

Location: Parts Unknown | I love the ambiguous use of the word "Quality". Is that good quality ? Poor quality ? What is "quality" exactly, when not used with a qualifier ? For those of us who have enjoyed building a body back from a rusted hulk, we know just what quality meant in this ad. Unfortunately for those buying back then, the lack of qualifier held a big "surprise".
jimntempe |
| ||
Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | I think its generally understood that Quality without a qualifier means "it's good". Doesn't mean the best. But means better then average.
