Make no mistake about it; the 1959 advertising promotion "Cars that do what they look like they can do", and, referring
to quality of build, was the TRUTH.

Too bad that the 57 models were rushed into production with only two years of lead time; that extra, third, year could have
worked out a lot of the production quality bugs that were all too evident in 1957.

The 58's are noticeably better built than the 57's (1958 being a Recession year, exacerbated by all of the well-deserved bad
press about the 57's build deficiencies....so, not many 58's were built/sold....but, for 1959 the FWDLK car bodies and trim
were very well built, and Chrysler was trying to show the world that their cars were good, again.

Got a 59 DeSoto ad to post, tomorrow, in this regard.

This is the old A&P store in Long Beach, MS. This building, and no doubt some of the cars you see in this photo, were destroyed on August 17, 1969, by hurricane Camille, whose eye passed about 2 miles to the east of this spot. I don't know what year this was taken, but maybe we could hazard some guesses.

The building that replaced it was also destroyed by a hurricane. On August 29, 2005, hurricane Katrina completely annihilated the Rite Aid/Dollar General that stood on this spot. The storm surge erased the lot so completely that the only thing left intact was a bank vault.

I think its generally understood that Quality without a qualifier means "it's good".
Doesn't mean the best. But means better then average.

======================================

I would submit that "quality" without a qualifier is like using the word "taste" without one.

Does it taste good ? Bad ? Salty ? Like strawberries ? The assumption the "quality" means
good or above average is simply manipulation by the guy trying to make money off the deal !

And let's not kid ourselves, John Fowlie can tell you all about how rustproofed those "quality"
59 Plymouths were !

Is anyone able to tell me what this is and where it is? And whether or not it is still there? I am guessing it is an airport perhaps? It is fabulous! Adriana

Right-o, Doc! This is the TWA Terminal at Idlewild (now JFK) airport, New York.

Taken by photographer Ezra Stroller in 1962. Here are a few more of the set.
Ezra's photos are a must see for "Forward Look" architecture.

I remember reading about this Terminal in my INtro To Architecture class. It was considered quite the stylish and trend setting design. I assumed it was like other airport terminals I was familiar with, that is, BIG. It was years later when I actually flew into JFK and my gate was in this terminal and I was shocked at how small it was; it seemed tiny compared to other airports in major cities. Of course by then they had added more terminal space next to it to make the overall airport bigger but it was still surprising how such a small terminal had become THE thing in AP terminals.

I just love the interior catwalks and those airy railings. The short "loop" railings on the
ground floor are cool too. Back when I was a kid, this kind of thing was everywhere. I
remember watching contractors torching those railings off at a shopping mall. When the
place reopened, they were replaced with heavy square posts every eight feet or so, and
big wood slab rails stained a dark brown. This was 1974 or so, and goldenrod and avocado
appliances were all the rage, as was bright orange, yellow, and dark brown for colors. Cars
like Mavericks and Pintos were the matching "future" we were having crammed down our
throat too. It was terrific.

Is it just me, or do others get this flood of warm memories when they see all those kinds of

Parking lots were a visual candy store for shape and color.

The Daytona beach photo is cool. What gets me is the number of long roof's, convertibles and 2dr sedans. Here in Aus, 4dr sedans dominate. Very practical, us Aussies! (unfortunately).

This thread is a ripper, even my 17 year old boy likes it.

If I ever finish that time machine I'm going to Daytona in the 50's.

What is the silver conv in the centre of the photo? Cad?

The 57 Caddy had forward leaning fins like a 59 Plymouth. I can't remember which of those

Look at the windshield pillars. They appear to be vertical -- like '55/'56 -- rather than the slanted forward '57/'58 style.

That is a great pic! They really made use of the space on the trailer and the rear notch in the cab, but would have to tie down those cars so they didn't bounce much......

I recall reading something a long time ago where the general manager of the Plymouth Division was quoted as saying "In 1957 we built 700,000 cars and made 700,000 enemies". Sounds about right.

Seems a tad harsh; even if he was joking.

Interesting that the shipped cars, above, have their wheel covers installed on them.
