That Spring Special also has the rarely seen color coordinated headlight doors on it.

You can confirm that it is a Custom Royal vert (and not a Coronet) by its grille emblem (and, if you look closely,
by its gold anodized hood letters; Coros have chromed pot metal letters).

Thanks Doc. I was thinking it was a Spring only color. But it looked more orange.

That side trim looks more proper with the saddle style paint scheme.

====================================================

You could be right. Been a long time since a was a study of 58 Dodges. My car was a fully
decked SS coupe. While I like the lower side trim dying out into the model scripts as a design
idea, I don't like the way it forces you out of the b!tchin'-cool 57 style two-toning. Since it was
an option, and the scripts were already placed on the fender, I just took a set of 57 trims off
one of my yard cars and ditched the fat SS trim (along with the grille emblem, decklid escutcheon,
and those hideous "anti-fins" ! )

Anymore, I would leave the car together as the rare beast it is and sell it to someone who
would preserve it as a Spring Special and find a car more to my liking that does not destroy
such a unique car. I feel guilty for doing what I did, although the parts were all sold with the
car, so maybe the subsequent owner undid my "mistake" ?

That Spring Special's OEM color was almost certainly "Poppy'.

Here's a screen shot of a paint chart showing it, alongside Paris Rose.

Maybe the Kodachrome makes the color off? Like the 58 Adventurer photo that makes it look green but it's gotta be gold.

Are these SS colors very close to other Mopar colors? Poppy looks like Toreador Red, Frosted Turquoise looks like Vincent's 58 Plymouth, Paris Rose like Vic's 58 Plymouth Convertible.

The color of that SS 58 Dodge looks much more like a coral or "rust" (58 DeSoto "Autumn Rust" ...
... or was it "Mandarin Rust" ? comes to mind). Poppy sure looks over-the-top bright to me. But
then again, those old color photos tend to warp-out for color too .....

I can say with reasonable certainty that it was none of the blue or green colors offered that year !

Here's a part of a pic that's turned up on an Aussie forum...

It's the Chadstone shopping centre carpark in Melbourne and seems to have been taken in mid-1962. There would seep to be just the one Forward Look car in frame, though I think there's a Simca there to pretend to be a second one.

Another reason I have for posting this here is because I'd like to get an ID on the black car towards the lower right side of the pic... can anyone pick that for me?

Interesting how in the old days there was a vast amount of COLOR in the cars. If you took a similar parking lot photo today it would be mostly a sea of BLAH.

===========================================================

I have never really looked into it, but this is a long-sliding trend that involves everything from
commercial signage to house paint. Everything seems to have been injected with a heavy dose
of sedatives. Most uppity types aspire to live in a McMansion, shunning a house with real character,
and the ocean of news homes all painted "Suicide Grey" ? Wassup with that ? Not only do people
seem "happy" with it, but park a shapeless grey/tan/blah Lexus or Hyundaillac out front and it's
Nirvana time !

Sorry, I'd rather chew my arm off.

===================================================

It actually worked the other way around.

It was BECAUSE of ads like this that the public came to see the 50's styling as old and icky.

America largely got "played" by the advertising firms hired to open the U.S. market to foreign
cars (and other products). We swallowed it hook, line, AND sinker !

=============================================

I see no Forward Look car in that photo, at least not in an American market FL kind of way.

I think the old black thing has too squared fenders to be a GM product. Looks more like a
49-50-ish Chrysler or Dodge to me. The roof also has Keller written all over it. 50 Chrysler ?

Would it possibly be a late forties De Soto...

The Forward Looker is a Chrysler Royal AP2. The rear extremities have what look like '56 Plymouth tail lights, but there's a '58/'59 Dodge-like fin wrapped over the top of them.

The horizontal bars in the grille rule out DeSoto from 42-55.

And let me apologize again for the goofy cars our automakers foisted off on you non-U.S.
buyers and still had the nerve to tell you were the "genuine article".

Aww! I like the strange mash-up that are Australian cars. They are bizarre in a fun way, much like their animals.

I grew up calling them Plymouths and never thought for a moment to try grafting a fin to another fin, or imagined they could be called by any other name. What a remarkable vehicle. How about those weird creations in which they fitted a 55/56 clip to a 53 body? Could you even imagine such a thing? They are like the re-imagined vehicles of the Grand Theft Auto video game world, made in real life.

I remember when I first found out that Australia had strange cars like that. I spent about a week combing Aussie Flikr streams, marveling at these wondrous vehicles. They are like some kind of alternate universe to me, where things are kind of the way they are in reality, yet different.

Australia occupies a special place in my heart for another reason. That fortunate country is home to the largest Valiant collectors club in the world. They have some dooozies in that line as well, but since most of them are not forward look, I will constrain myself from commenting except to note that I believe with all of my heart that the coolest vehicle on earth has to be the Valiant Ute. This Australian only vehicle was, quite simply, a Valiant station wagon with no back, much like an American Falcon Ranchero. My favorites, of course, are the early "Road Toad" versions, but the later ones are great as well.

Sorry... any 'toad' Valiant utes are purely home made...

The first production Valiant utes came in either the AP5 or AP6, after the toad had hopped away.

In that light, it is hard to disagree. For a culture and people not too different than in the U.S., they
sure do some quirky stuff, talk funny, and harbor the strangest critters still moving about the planet !

.... and all in one place !

Sorry... any 'toad' Valiant utes are purely home made...

The first production Valiant utes came in either the AP5 or AP6, after the toad had hopped away.

I am surprised to hear that. They look production to me. They all have the same fill panel behind the door, with a Valiant logo stamped into it.

Please tell me more. Where did these panels come from? Was there some sort of conversion kit that was provided after-market, or donors from a newer ute?

In any case, I love them. A Valiant truck. Now *that* is a durable and useful vehicle!
