Not that many actually cares about it, but there's 3 Volvo PV and 2 djungle drums (SAAB two-strokers) in that picture! Why djungle drum? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_bTTUihfx0

Yeah, yeah... six cylinders between the two of them... not only that!

Each engine displaces almost as much as one cylinder in a good 413... a good thing they had Eric Carlson on their side...

I can probably thank those Saabs for the eternal taste of sh!t in my mouth when I see 99% of foreign
cars. WTF were these people thinking ??? I swear the stylist must have just
spun around after dropping a healthy growler, imagined a steering wheel and lights, and the "Backdoor Look"
was created.

And the people who drove them ! At least here in the U.S., you could pretty much bet that they were
the type who would argue to the death that violent criminals are misunderstood and were "awkward"
around females. What a gawdfersakin POS !

Actually, I agree about the "design" Doc, but for your knowledge, the designers had the aircraft wing profile in mind when they designed them.
As for the persons that bought and drove them, you're most probably right there - who else would like those turds when they could buy a real car?

We were luckier here...

They didn't start to sell them here until they had the Ford V4 engine in them... and everyone knew that was such a dud that sales were very small.

99% of the foreign crap today is even uglier than that as far as I'm concerned. So Doc, I can empathize with you about that taste in my mouth every time I see a foreign car too!

I hear you, but back then you had a CHOICE ! LOTS of choices ! Do I go for the 57 Olds, the Chrysler, or the

Referring to the photo at the top of this page.

That is a 1960 Imperial on the billboard (America's most carefully built car!).

That photo is likely from 1959 not 1958. Am I right?

Man, you guys gotta study your history.

Was thinking about saying something pithy (not pissie) about the business man, living
La Vida Loca 50's style (DIG that wife!), above, but he is the embodiment of the 50's
Corporate lifestyle:

[After I get done with re-reading Tales from Margaritaville---good summer reading---I'll do this guy,
again, for the third time; refresher course].

Still thinking about the iconic young business exec and his iconic family and car.

The man's attire is timeless, with his european-cut suit with pleated front, low cuffed pants.

What is most interesting (to me) is that he is wearing cowboy boots, in brown (which match his tie and his car).

The suit was not made for the wearing of cowboy boots; the pants 'ride' up a little high on them, so, this
is a weekend affair for him.

The foliage looks tropical, but the trees and grass are seasonal, and the sun is low in the sky; maybe Easter Weekend,
but no corsage on Mommie; its chilly out, that morning, but he is apparently also wearing a short sleeved shirt, so, he
also apparently does not intend to remove his suit coat (engineers like short sleeved shirts).

His son may well be taking 'this' (of several) photos of the scene, which prominently features an apparently BRAND-new
family station wagon; no dirt, yet, even on its WWW's.

It's probably the family's only car, and it is brand new; the era's SUV; or, it could just be Mommie's new ride, but they are
making a big deal out of formally posing in front of it.

This family DEFINITELY has style in its clothing and in its car(s).

Without a doubt, he is a WWII vet, putting it behind him.

His pride in himself, his position in life, his family, and his new car, and her contentedness in same, is
quietly very impressive.

True life Ozzie & Harriet (she even looks like Harriet Nelson).

Interesting that the car appears to have been driven up on the lawn in order to take the photo. That would make me suspect it was perhaps a posed photo, i.e. not just a family photo but taken for some commercial purpose.

Driven into what appears to be an awkward parking spot, moreover... certainly somewhere
you wouldn't normally park.

Anyway, they're proud of their new car and we've got the pic here... where did it come from?

The photo is definitely not commercially produced (everybody would be smiling, deliriously, at the camera, the lighting would
be even, he would not look somewhat rumpled, and it wouldn't be taken in a cramped back yard), but it is a purposely
set-up happy-family portrait.

The cramping of the backyard, the lack of attention to the background does show it to be a very amateur pic...

Surely out front of the house, under a tree or in a park would have looked better?

Look to the far right under the sign "Broadway..." behind the white Buick leaving the lot. There's a white 4 door Chrysler or Desoto sedan hiding there
