Expert Posts: 2473 Location: Dalveen, Queensland, Australia | For the benefit of those curious to know... and I'm sure Kenny will be one of them... The photo I posted on the previous page (and repeat below) is from Brisbane about 1961 or 1962. The 'South Wales' on the building is a part of the 'Bank of New South Wales' signage. McWhirters is still there and largely unchanged, it is a shopping arcade and apartment building in Fortitude Valley, a part of inner Brisbane city and is on a corner of Brunswick Street, the main drag through the Valley. I can't work out the actual locations here, I don't know that area all that well and these pics are from at least thirty years before I moved to Brisbane. The other photo here I've posted because it is in the immediate vicinity about ten years later, it is from a different direction and (it seems to me) it shows Coles in a different place. Nevertheless, the purpose of this all is to identify to those not familiar with our local cars what we have in the pic... Lower left, the black car coming into the picture is an FC Holden, made 1958 and '59. Ahead of it is the very similar FE Holden equipped as a taxi. FEs came out in late 1956 and ran into '58. The Simca may be a Berlieu, but all of these model Simcas were universally known in Australia as Vedettes. They had the 2350cc version of the Ford flathead V8 and sold here from the mid-fifties to the early sixties. The Simca is following a Humber Hawk, mid-fifties model. These had the ohv four with duralumin rods of enormous length. Of course it's following a Chev, which is undoubtedly powered by a six because we didn't start getting the small block V8 until later. You should know the Falcon up ahead there, this would be either an XK (introduced October '60) or the succeeding XL model... one of which features in the second picture. The grey Holden panel van in the lower right is either an FB (from Jan '60) or an EK (mid-'61 to mid-'62) and is particularly interesting because it has 'barn doors' in the back rather than the factory top and bottom sections. Funnily enough, I have seen one like this myself, restored by its present owner and originally owned by (and modified for) one of the Sydney utility organisations, I think it was the Sydney County Council (who used to be the electricity authority in Sydney). The other identifiable car in the second pic is a VC Valiant from '67 or so, though you could say the front of the Morris Minor in the lower left is identifiable. Veteran Posts: 124 | Wow. That Belvy vert is sexy. What a wonderful companion it would make for my Valiant 'vert. If only I could go down and simply rescue it from the beach... Did you notice the difference in the way that green grocery getter handled as compared with that `53 Shebby around the 3:20 mark? That bit could have been a promotional piece for Chrysler right there. Of course, the Shebby was 5 years old at the time, and the Belvy a mouth-watering brand new, but the Plymouth is clearly a smoother ride. ...And I am biased. I had never seen this film before, but I love those old Sid Davis cheese balls. For anyone who has never had the pleasure of riding in a 58 Belvy vert, the many camera angles presented in this work are as close as you can get. I did get to ride in a `57 Belvy vert, just once. It was on the same day that I got a helicopter ride over our local car show, Crusin' The Coast, in a mid 60's Huey. To this day, I still do not know which ride I enjoyed more. Veteran Posts: 194 Location: Dorset, England | I have a French built f*rd flathead motor that is stamped 1989!!! My son works on the darn things and has seen them dated as late as 1992. It beggars belief that anyone other than Briggs and Stratton would still be manufacturing sidevalve motors post war, but they did.

Expert Posts: 2473 Location: Dalveen, Queensland, Australia | The really cool bit is that when they sent the tooling to South America they updated the body style and got the rights to the Ardun ohv conversion for the V8-60 engines and mass produced them... Look up the Chrysler Esplanada or the Emi-Sul engine.
