With reference to the previous post on the page prior to this, regarding 'Hybrid" 1960 Dodges, there were Phoenix Wagons built in Canada with Polara side trim, Polara tail lights, with a Dart grille, and of course the obligatory Plymouth interior.

They were officially known as "Phoenix Sport Suburbans" - this is the official explanation:

Dart Phoenix models were not officially built as station wagons for sale in the USA, but production records indicate that at least 320 were actually assembled. One source (Mr. Gregory Mansell), confirmed by Bill Watson, of Vancouver, BC, Canada says that these wagons were built specifically for the Canadian market, since there was no happy medium between a lower priced Pioneer wagon and the upmarket Polara hardtop wagon. Since the Matador was not available in Canada, the solution was to badge this wagon as a Phoenix. Unfortunately, all Dart wagons, like Matadors and Polaras, were built on the 122 inch wheelbase. The rear fender opening on the 122" w.b. cars was several inches HIGHER than the fender opening on the non-wagon Darts, which were built on the 118" w.b. The double molding with the bright trim insert used on Phoenix cars, therefore, could not be applied to the wagons, as there was not enough room above the fender opening because the horizontal ridge where the mouldings were applied was too close to the top of the fender for it to fit. This was not a problem with either the Seneca or Pioneer wagons, as they did not use this double moulding with the bright aluminum insert. The solution: These Canadian Phoenix wagons had Polara / Matador side trim and taillights installed, and were dubbed "Phoenix Sport Suburbans"! These photos are taken from a Canadian brochure. You can confirm this is a Dart by the script on the tailgate which matches the written "Dodge" script on the Darts. On Matador and Polara, "Dodge" was spelled out in block letters on the tailgate. The frontal shot shows the Dart grille installed on what would otherwise be a Matador Wagon. The interior is straight out of a Plymouth. Note the red lenses in the fins - these were not available on production models - a chrome insert was placed in the area as it was too hard to get into the area to replace bulbs.

With reference to the above story on the Phoenix wagon, there is one known to exist in Europe. This is it. It confirms the Polara trim and tail lights with a Dart Grille and hood medallion and Plymouth interior.

That old $28.9/gallon price of Regular grade gas would correlate to about $3.00, today; not cheap, especially with the cars
getting something less than 12 MPG in around-town driving, every day....and requiring regular mechanical attention, and with a
'good' car surviving for 100,000 miles, maybe.

You may be right with the price correlation about one-to-ten, as new-car prices took a similar development.

But why only 100.000 miles?
In a dry state without salt, a late-1950's car could last far longer, if well maintained IMO.

I saw lots of cars from that era exceed 100,000 miles, though anything over that amount was usually considered a bonus. You could reasonably expect to re-ring and grind valves at that mark.

It wasn't all the car design, but also external factors. Lubricants were not nearly as good as those of today, and roads were much worse. Very few roads were paved where I lived, so the cars were constantly exposed to rough dirt and gravel, and all the dust kicked up while driving. Filters plugged, seals leaked and grit wore out bearings and brakes. The same roads turned to mud bogs when it rained, exposing the entire undercarriage to four-wheeling conditions. Winter brought snow drifts to plough through and washboard ice in towns that shook bodies apart. We didn't have a garage for our cars, as they were reserved for farm equipment. When temps dipped below zero, you pumped the accelerator to pour raw gas into the engine so it would start, and often used ether in extreme cold. Imagine the cylinder wall lubrication issues that caused.

I will also take issue with 12 mpg average. Yes, on some cars that was normal, especially if you lived in cities, but all the 318 powered cars we had averaged about 18, and flathead sixes were in the 20 range. Manual overdrive bought you one or two more.

There were a couple things I believe were major factors in why people thought a vehicle was "high mileage" and worn out when it had more than 60K on the odometer and/or more then 4 years old. One was the use of oil bath air filters. They are terrible filters and let tons of dirt thru with consequent high engine wear. The second was the VERY common practice of dealers as well as individuals rolling back odometers. It would not be at all unusual for a car with 90K real miles to have been rolled back twice and be sitting on a lot showing 29K miles.

that means that some (or many) of today's low mileage collector cars have their odometers rolled back 40 or 50 years ago...

First thing I noticed in the second pic...

I was just thinking, "I should go through there as I cross Minnesota and take a pic... I wonder if that water tower has been replaced?" and then came the second pic.

It also looks like it's been built next to, and further from this street, than the old. Undoubtedly erected while the old one was still in use.

May 19, 1960 Times Square NYC

Note very early 1957 Plymouth taxi with wide slots in front pan

also 2 1956 Dodges in the same blue/white colour combo as Sid's pic above.

I consider this one as maybe the most interesting of the pictures I posted. Surely the most colorful.

The 1957 Plymouth might have already seen most of his life, after three years of hard round-the-clock use as NYC taxi.
Every driver hangs his elbow out of the window.

I like those neon signs, advertising "beer shampoo", television appliances, and air conditioners. Promising the good life!
Also a navy recruiting ad there.

The Francis P. Duffy and George M. Cohan memorials watching the scenery in the background still are there today.

On the Aisle Way of the second floor of Perkin's Dodge they have a photo of a 1956 De Soto used for The Hill Climb --- but no Dodge ( that I remember of ).
