I got my 58 torqueflite rebuilt, and have set the control cable to it's proper position as described in the manual ( so the neutral safety switch only works in neutral). I drove it 4 miles, all the while having to hold the D button in for the trans to work, otherwise it seems to slip into neutral after several seconds, no matter if I push 1, 2, or D. I went to start it again and the cable is so far out of adjustment that I can't start the car, in any gear...what the #@*& is going on here???

But now i only trust in the method i describe in my page : http://www.ch300imp.com/tqf-sw.htm#adj . The only drawback is that this method needs to remove the oil pan so you must drain the transmission. But looking at the "ball" and checking if it is well seated in the sector seems to me more accurate than pushing and pulling the cable then lock it at the middle of the play .. Phil, you are the man! It sounds like that's exactly what's happening...thanks so much, I'll follow up with my findings. I suppose when the cars were new, Chrysler's method worked OK but after half a decade of use there's some wear in the cable, shift mechanism, etc. At least with these trannys, the pan is very easy to drain/remove! One thing I found, I drained the oil today, and I thought the level was ok beforehand but now I wonder - only 2 and a half litres came out...does that sound like not enough oil was in it? I'm sure this isn't what was causing the problem, just curious.

I fixed it! Main problem - The dumbass transmission mechanic that built it (whom I paid over $2000) put the cable arm on upside down!!! Therefore trans could not fully go into D, 2, or 1 due to interference from the arm/spring hitting housing.

About the 2 1/2 liters i think that you drove the car recently so the converter is full. Don't worry about that (but check the level when refilling !
- To adjust the position of the assembly, slide a 7/32 drill between control lever and trans. housing then tighten the screw. This adjustement must be made without the control adpater housing gasket. Thanks Phil, excellent job on the pics and website...too bad the shop manuals aren't as helpful! Now I have a working trans, it was drivable for like, 10 minutes!! Then, later today, the engine seized up. Getting tired of this dance - one step forward, two steps back. Edited by 58dodgeregent 2007-05-19 10:20 PM
