Location: Twin Falls, Idaho		Here is our new ride..... a 1958 Fargo Sweptside, sold in Canada by Chrysler/Plymouth dealers. It originally came from Saskatchewan but we found it in Oklahoma, not far from Tulsa. It has a 313 wide block V8 and three on a tree.

George - the first and only Fargo I ever owned was a 1972 Fargo Tradesman 100 cargo van for my lock and safe business.  It came with the business when I purchased it in 1976.   It was registered as a Fargo,  said Fargo on the grille,  but had Dodge script on the back door,  and it came from the factory that way. ( I worked for the original owner of the business and was there as a teen-ager when he bought it new)  I suppose it would be somewhat of a collector item now being built like that.

I don't remember when they discontinued the name Fargo in Canada but my next new van was a 79 Dodge B200, no more Fargos.  I've always used Dodge vans for the business, I have had an 80, 85, 94, 97 and 99 and currently still own the 94, 97 and 99 units.  The 94 has 300,000 KM and is the one I personally use - factory ordered with a full load of options.   My goal is to keep these vans running as long as possible- as Dodge doesn't build these any more.

Allpar says that the Fargo name was retired in 1972. Do you Canadians have any evidence to back this up?

I disagree with the 440 comment above, if it gets a wedge it should get a 413 with long ram intake, but of course a 331 hemi would sit pretty in place of the 313.

Location: DFW, TX		Sweptsides used 2dr station wagon quarter panels and tail lights. They had to build the beds one at a time, as they were ordered, right next to the assembly line!

What's the deal with the rear wheel openings on that '58? They don't look right to me.

As for known Ssides left, look at this from http://www.sweptsides.com/main58.htm

1957 - 180 made - 75 or fewer survivors
1958 - 975 made - 60 or fewer survivors
1959 - 100 made - 30 or fewer survivors

..so my guess is that Fargo Sweptside is one RARE bird. The only other Fargo Sside I've seen is this orange one.

Location: Twin Falls, Idaho		This isn't a FARGO Sweptside.... it is a 57 Dodge Sweptside. I know the guy that restored and sold it. It went for over $70,000 at Russo & Steele Auction in January.

The wheel lips on the red/grey Fargo are not correct. Someone restored the truck about 15 years ago and did a very poor job on the lower rear tailfins. The Sweptside beds are identical to any long wheel base stepside with some modifications to the tailgate to eliminate the chains and add the latch. There are 4 more holes drilled in the bed sides for additional mounting screws for the tailfins. About 6-8 inches of additional panel at the front of the 2 door wagon quarters were required to make then quarters fit the Sweptsides.

Location: Twin Falls, Idaho		Yes, they did get the pushbuttons with the 3 speed automatic LoadFlite transmission (basically a heavy duty TorqueFlite). Regarding FARGO Sweptsides, I only know of ONE automatic in desperate need of restoration but the guy won't sell it.

The last Fargo built for the Canadian market was for the 1972 model year. Chrysler continued to build Fargo Trucks for export markets until the mid-1980's. When the 17-digit VIN was adopted for the 1981 model year, "E" was used for the Fargo Truck. Not sure when the last Fargo truck was built, but for 1988 the "E" was used for the new Eagle car.

During the 1970's Dodge Trucks had a body tag on the driver's door post with "Plymouth", "Dodge" "DeSoto" and "Fargo" on it.

Fargo trucks were built in the U.S. for the export market starting in 1933. Beginning in the 1940's the larger Dodge and Fargo trucks sold in Canada were imported from Detroit, something that continued to the end in 1972. All Dodge and Fargo Truck flathead six Power Wagons were built in the U.S.

As for proof 1972 was the last? How about Chrysler Canada truck brochures? The 1972 trucks models had brochures with "Dodge/Fargo" on them and the trucks inside having either Dodge or Fargo nameplates. Dealer signs on the back covers were "Plymouth-Chrysler-Fargo Trucks" and "Dodge-Chrysler-Dodge Trucks".

For 1973 all truck brochures were Dodge Truck with no mention of the Fargo with all trucks in the brochure with Dodge nameplates. The back cover had the dealer signs "Plymouth-Chrysler-Dodge Trucks" and "Dodge-Chrysler-Dodge Trucks".

And of course there was the first Fargo Truck, built from mid-1928 to late 1930 (129 to 1931 model years) that used Plymouth 4-cylinder engines and Dodge/DeSoto flathead sixes. These were sold at Plymouth and DeSoto dealers.

Did somebody say "FARGO" ?

My gold FWDLK ring commemorates the Fargo Trucks
on one side and the Chrysler and Plymouth cars
on the other side.

The other FWDLK rings commemorate DeSotos
and Dodges, etc. , on the sides of them.

Mine is apparently a Canadian recognition/version
of this ring.
