Is the headlight bezel on a 57 Dodge supposed to be chromed or painted body color, or did they come both ways?

That's something I always wondered too. I know on my '57 the headlight bezels have a flat silver paint finish. My Dodge is basically original with a good chunk of the body paint being original as well. So, and I am guessing here, that the silver paint finish was original too. I do remember seeing an ad for the '58 Dodge Spring Swept-Wing where the car has the chrome fin caps and headlight bezels painted the same color as the body of the car. But I have never come across anything that shows a '57 with painted bezels...

Mine are flat silver. These come up for sale on eBay fairly frequently and they all seem to be flat silver as well.

Here is why I ask, mine are painted gloss white to match the body, but they look like they have been painted recently. There is a chip in the paint, and underneath is a very shiny Chrome, or polished aluminum, I haven't inspected it that closely yet. I assume they are made of pot metal, so that rules out the polished aluminum. I don't want to strip the paint off because I'm sure if they were chrome, they have been painted for a reason, but if I keep the car long enough to have some rechroming done, I think it would look nice to do these as well if it is correct.

It's too bad that the actual cars didn't come from the factory as low slung as the ads make them look. While impresively low for the time, if they had actually looked like the ads, that would have been amazing.

I don't know much about the 58 Dodges, but could that have been something like a "Spring Special" edition- read the literature, it seems that might have been the case (?)

OK: starting with the 58 Spring Specials, ALL of the individual trim pieces could have been put on, piecemeal, at the factory (meaning that
a true factory S.S. (which SHOULD have one of the unique S.S. paint-color-schemes) MIGHT have varying-extents of the S.S. trim be
installed on it.

The S.S. trim was also officially available-for-installation, at any dealership, on any car, with any extent of trim.

For whatever reason(s--cost, probably!) , color-matching headlight doors were very rare items. Think I know of 2 -3 S.S.'s
still existing, with color-coordinated headlight doors.

Now, for 1957: my own CRL came with an all-black steering wheel (2-tone was an option) AND, apparently, with the silver-painted headlight doors.

The chromed headlight doors were not included, as being part of any Accessory Group, AND, there is no specific mentioning
of the headlight door appearance, on the Broadcast Sheet, or, on the IBM card .

I happen to carry, in my wallet, a tiny-photocopy of the Ross Roy "Model-option" page.

It says that BOTH CRL's & Roys came, OEM, with the chromed headlight doors, and that the Coro's came with the "painted" doors.

So why my CRL had painted headlight doors, when I bought it, in 1980: I DUNNO! In 1980, it definitely looked to have been in
'original' condition, but, it did have aftermarket rear-view mirrors on it, and a lower-white-area bondo/rust-cover-up/repaint.

BTW, I retrofitted the chrome-doors on my car , and really like their flashy appearance.

The S.S. colors were Paris Rose(metallic), Poppy Red, and Frosted Turquoise(metallic). The car, above, may be painted in Poppy
Red(?).--it looks very-orangy, in the pic, though.

Note the Coronet grille emblem, on it, instead of the CRL grille emblem, as shown in the advertisement, above.

I'm pretty-sure that this car has appeared in a calendar-spread, somewhere.

I know some 58 models came with painted headlight doors, but I have never heard of a 57 model with them. Sounds like a custom job.

my original 57 Royal has painted doors. It appears it may have been an option on Royals. Its also a "white chrome" not a blue fender chrome. Bright aluminized looking. this is from the NOS set on ebay.

its not chrome, its aluminum

Mike,
Your bright aluminum ones may be the rare ones! We had lots of painted and chromed ones. As mentioned above, we used to search for the painted ones because they usually were not pitted and were good ones to send to be chromed.

The bright aluminized set for 1957 was originally prime, and then painted at the factory or dealership.

Checking the 1957 parts book the chrome version was used on the D67-2 (Custom Royal) and D-71 (Custom Sierra) models :
- R-1753 446 / L-1753 447 - with parking lamp assembly
- R-1753 442 / L-1753 443 - without parking lamp assembly

For all other models, D66 (Coronet V8), D67-1 (Royal V8), D70 (Suburban, Sierra), D72 (Coronet 6), the part was listed as "Prime" -
- R-1689 882 / L-1689 883

If you look closely at the photo you can see part number "1689882" in the outer circle of the headlamp hole. The part has probably been cleaned and all the paint and primer removed.

For 1958 the parts book lists two sets of numbers -
early - R-1832 036 L-1832 037
late - R-1832 680 L-1832 681

The early type was used on car serial numbers up to and including -
LD1 (Coronet 6) - Detroit - LD1-5028
LD2 (Coronet V8, Royal) - Detroit - LD2-47113
LD2 (Coronet V8, Royal) - Los Angeles - LD2L-7985
LD3 (Custom Royal) - Detroit - LD3-24703
LD3 (Custom Royal) - Los Angeles - LD3L-6596
LD3 (Custom Royal) - Windsor - LD3W-3593
LE1 (Crusader, Regent - 6) - Windsor - LE1W-5864
LE2 (Crusader, Regent, Mayfair - V8) - Windsor - LE2W-7331

Have no idea what the differences are. The book just has the serial numbers with no further explanation.
